Agreed on Brown I suppose, but I just don't want to be in the situation where we have to play S-H-C or Beard on the wing ever again.
Really is a farce when you consider there are several talented young wingers coming through.

I was actually disappointed with Farndale at the Melrose 7s. He looks very much in the Visser mould - big strong athlete but not a natural rugby player by any stretch of the imagination. There's plenty room for those kind of wingers though if they can run in tries!
If the boy turns out like Visser I'm sure neither him, Edinburgh or Scotland would mind too much!

Exactly.
But we ain't going to fine out until he gets regular gametime!
He is away for the under 20s world cup this summer and he really should be looking to put in some strong performances given his (relative) experience at that level. If he can do that and get a decent pre-season in he really should be getting gametime next season.

Unless Edinburgh sign some big name over the summer (or pappy brings in another saffa) then Farndale only needs to leap-frog Brown which ain't particularly challenging to be honest! (assuming that is that pappy starts playing wingers on the wing rathr than 9's, 12's, midly racist uncle dougie's)

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
I'm with the consensus that Edinburgh need to focus on the young wingers coming through, Farndale and Hoyland in particular.
Brown has been fine on the wing, and will cover Cuthbert at 15 next season whilst Tonks cements his place at 10. I really want to see Scott back at 12 and for me that means Dougie Fife moving inside to 13. I think he'd make a great 13. If that happen then Visser and Brown need cover at wing, and it seems that's where we currently have some rich talent coming through, so we need to use it.
San H-C should focus on 9, where I think he could be really useful. Beard looks more like utility cover, and I'd query whether or not we couldn't find an SQ replacement for him at a similar level. He's been ok but nothing special. Same with Dominguez and Strauss, the later being particularly disappointing for me so far.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Guys like Dominguez and Strauss genuinely do seem to be blocking younger Scottish players from coming through. I really think that the starting lineup for the backs should be (on the assumption no more signings are made, although I think they will be):
9 Hart
10 Tonks
11 Visser
12 Scott
13 Fife
14 Farndale
15 Cuthbert
Possible also that Lee Jones will swap back and Tom Brown will step up.
Farndale has unbelievable gas and just needs some time back in the 15s game.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
I'd be equally happy with Brown or Hoyland at 14, but that's what I want to see as well.
The only NSQ players in the 1st XV next season should be the two project players, Nel and Du Preez, plus Coman potentially at 6 (although I'd rather have Du Preez at 6, Rennie at 7 and Denton at 8).
We have too many NSQ players not adding enough quality.

Does Hamish Watson signing suggest Rennie is off? Would we need Watson if Rennie was staying?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
I'm pretty sure Rennie will be off. He's far too good to stay at a club that doesn't regard him as first choice. Solomons seems to have an 18 stone cut-off point for his forwards. Shame, because Rennie and Du Preez working together on the flanks would be a wonderful combination in my opinion.
Watson is ok, nothing special. Not bad over the ball, but he doesn't have the pace or footballing skills that Rennie has, or the uncanny ability to dislodge the ball in contact. Rennie is just such a smart player. If he stays fit and Bristol go up, I think he'll make a big impact on the Aviva, and Robinson for all his flaws knows how to coach a pack of forwards.

Tell you what, McInally gets persuaded to move to hooker by Solomons and Johnson, gets shipped off to Bristol and looks like he be getting the boot from Edinburgh.
Bet he's delighted about that!

So what's the pack going to be?
01 Blaauw/Dickinson/Dell
02 Ford
03 Nel
04 Gilchrist
05 Bresler
06 Du Preez
07 Rennie
08 Denton
Absolutely decent.
Edit: Would be absolutely gutted if Edinburgh lost a fit Rennie.

Are Bristol using him at hooker? I'm not against the move, but the SRU really should stand by him if they've asked him to switch positions like that.
As a back row player he was the equal of Coman and Leonardi in my opinion.

Guy on the Embra supporters board claims he's talked to AR and Rennie is signed for them next season as Edinburgh don't want him. But we all know how reliable the ERSC forum is.

It does sound likely though.
Bold move given Bristol aren't up yet - can't see him going to the world cup if he's playing championship rugby.

Since Edinburgh could do with anther standoff, imagine my excitement at the pub when I saw in the TV that Dan Parks is leaving Connacht at the end of the season...
Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Can see how this would pan out on Twitter:
"We will be announcing a new signing later on today"
Edinburgh fans - ooh very exciting!
"Clue 1 - he is a stand off ...."
Edinburgh fans - we need one of those!
"Clue 2 - he is a Scotland international...."
Edinburgh fans WE'VE FINALLY SIGNED HEATHCOAT!!!!!
" Clue 3 - he has awesome sideburns!"
Edinburgh fans -
"We're delighted to announce the signing of Dan Parks and a 5 year deal!"
Edinburgh fans - Nooooooooooo!!!!!!
To be fair, we probably could do a lot worse, and I have every confidence that we probably will do!

How very odd that our best openside since Finlay Calder is currently playing against teams like (no dissarespecta) Jersey and Ealing Trailfinders. Bristol are now 8 points clear at the top, but it has to be asbestos underpants time for Rennie until he knows for sure that he'll be playing Jeff rugby next season. On what basis could Cotter possibly justify picking a Championship player?

You have to ask the question too whether an attritional league like the AP is the best place for a player like Rennie, in the sense that he seems to know no fear but his body is not always willing. I hope that he gets his time well managed

Great, another young and promising Scot simply handed over to Glasgow whilst Edinburgh fill the prop roster with journeyman NSQ players.
I'm cutting Solomons as much slack as I can, but the last 6 weeks have seen a sharp return to Bradley-esque habits. Poor performances with defeats to Zebre and Cardiff and bad judgement regarding team selection and players.
I couldn't be less excited with our new "playmaking" axis of Bezzy and Strauss - two players handpicked by Solomons, and the decision to ditch Rennie in favour of playing the likes of Coman, Du Preez and Leonardi out of position at 7 is a mistake of Scott Johnson proportions. Meanwhile, he has completely ignored young Scots like Farndale and Hoyland as options on the wing in favour of playing scrum half Sam Hidalgo-Clyne out of position on the wing, or specialist full back Jack Cuthbert (with fly half Bezzy playing several games at 15), and leaving the club this season (along with Rennie) are Alex Allan and Harry Leonard, two young Scottish players not long ago tipped for big futures.
I think I'm right in saying that if we lose the last two games, which is fairly likely, we'll have exactly the same league record as the previous season. There have been some improvements, but it's mighty slow progress, and not in a direction helpful to the national team.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
you need to remember FES that pappy lives and ides by his pre-season conditioning!
He will get his full pre-season this year so if things dont improve next season then pappy should be out on his ear with the SRU door hitting him on the arse on the way out!
Losing Rennie is a big blow but we don't know what the story is behind this! Rennie just seems to love playing for Andy Robinson (whom btw I would welcome back with open arms as forwards coach under Vern Cotter)
At the end of the day, Edinburgh will always have the moral victory over Glasgow

Losing Rennie is a big blow but we don't know what the story is behind this! Rennie just seems to love playing for Andy Robinson (whom btw I would welcome back with open arms as forwards coach under Vern Cotter)

Good move for Allan though!
FFS Edinburgh this is becoming a farce.
Allan looked to really have potential and just as he looks to make the next step up we ship him to Glasgow, leaving Edinburgh with a Scotland international, two Saffers and a New Zealander covering looshead?
Can't say much about Cringle, Irvine-Hess and Dick leaving, as I've never seen them play.
The heart and soul of Edinburgh has well and truly been ripped out with all these players leaving. You could say it is a good thing that is needed, but I'm yet to see the new Edinburgh team deliver.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread III
Totally agree - Allan can play both sides and is already a Scotland A cap and a MacPhail Scholar. Solomons could not possibly argue with those credentials for a young player, so what the hell is going on? With Moray Low off and the mighty Coo still AWOL, he will fit in nicely on the tighthead side for Glasgow, but Edinburgh are not drowning in amazing quality 3s themselves. Unless Nel really will play 80 mins of every game, ever. Really weird. Almost smells like an SRU edict. But then again, why would the SRU let Cross go to the Exiles? Madder than a box of pink hair.funnyExiledScot wrote:Majestic83 wrote:Alex Allan is switching clubs and has signed a 2 year deal at Glasgow from Edinburgh......great bit of thinking yet again by Edinburgh!! Great, another young and promising Scot simply handed over to Glasgow whilst Edinburgh fill the prop roster with journeyman NSQ players.

We perhaps need to reserve judgement until all the new signings come in.
Solomons said they have basically completed their player requirement for next year so there will be more players lined up to come in.
With Allan (who I would say was more of a looshead) and Cross gone it leaves us with Nel and Berghan at tighthead. That's it.

Maybe the SRU have decided its time to put all the good eggs in one basket!
Edinburgh are now a feeder club for the unwashed ones!
anyone else feel like posting the SRU a book named "Man Management - The do's and dont's"

Just saw a stat that since the really showed how big the gulf has grown between Glasgow and Edinburgh, well certainly in the League.
There have been 64 games since the Playoffs came into and since then the total points table reads.
Glasgow 210 pts (45 wins)
Edinburgh 105 pts (20 wins)
Although its fair to point out that Edinburgh have had more success in the HC over that period.

Just caught up on some of this edinburgh news, really frustrated by alex Allen leaving when I watched him at accies he was dominant and good around the park.
Never really seen dick play but he has really struggled with injuries so that makes sense, Irvine-Hess was a great age group player but is about 2 stone too light to play professionally so I wouldn't be upset if he became a sevens player because when I played 7s against him I think he won ever single kick-off.
Delighted cringle has left, think the SRU just signed him because he was an exile who played in the front row.
Anyone got an idea who will become EDPs next year? Surely glashan has to given a shot
I know glasgow are in talks to sign a another young forward but unfortunately I was not told who it was.
It's a shame to see Murdo mcandrew leave clermont, nice lad but can't see him making it now.

The optimist in me hopes that McAndrew left Clermont at the suggestion of a certain Mr Cotter, and that the zzz national coach will be keeping an eye in him at Melrose this year with a view to getting him an EDP place for, say, the 2015-16 season. A place at Glasgow, obviously...

There have been pretty strong hints that he will be an EDP at Edinburgh next year as well as playing for Melrose. He looks like a decent player but needs to do a bit more in the Gym to be a pro, looks more than a bit lightweight at the moment.

Don't know if he has a release clause but Alasdair Strokosch may become free soon thanks to Perpignan being relegated. His contract is due to run until 2016 so let's hope he does. He could really add some grit and leadership to the young Edinburgh pack.

Not sure what Cornell du Preez would say about that. Although as Denton obviously models his hair on Bieber's that comment isn't far from the truth.

Looks like our dearest Timmy has always been a wimp in the tackle - nice interview with him here
And representing the mighty Western brethren, a true Warrior of the Glasgow team... wait a sec, huh?! It's none other than fresh import from the racetrack Carlin Isles.
It's always great to see Scottish teams getting some exposure, but ironic neither of those guys are Scottish - granted, Visser is now an honorary Scot after scoring all of Edinburgh's tries for the past 4 seasons and doing similar things for Scotland. I gues they're both "marquise" players
Looking forward to Isles maybe getting game time at the weekend? Possibly? Maybe? (rumoured)

On a tenuously related note, I see that Grand Jeem is back over the Channel to Sarries to replace Steve Borthwick. Good to see him conceding needless penalties in the Jeff again.
