I do agree though that Shaw will likely be our 2016 full back. He looks like he will be right out of the top drawer.

His positioning is dodgy atm and he is another of the modern day type full back who is more attacking than defending, but give him the experience to develop his positioning and you can see him being one of the best in the world.

Should we be playing him at the world cup now to give him that experience for 2016 and onwards?

We can include Azzy whether he is busy or not, as he'll get killed in the first round anyway.
We also need to include Viva, so he can send 8 sheep answers to the runner for his nighttime vote

Could Shaw be another Bale type that ends up as a forward in the end though?

I don't see it, I actually think he's good defensively. Better to mould him into a Philipp Lahm-style LB, good defensively, great offensively, than risk creating some sort of Marcelo-hybrid who's not quite good enough at either end.

Shaw-Sterling can be our left wing for the next 10-15 years.

Bale had the power and the shot to make it further forward. Shaw has the pace, which enables him to get forward and still get back, but not the other two.

Shaw is good defensively. He is a great tackler and positioning is something that can be easily coached, so everything is there for him to be a great LB.

BTW my money is on United ending up with Daley Blind, because of the Dutych conneciton, and he'll become another Phil Jones, suffering for his versatility

Tbh Van Gaal is no Moyes. He'll stick players where they're best suited. Jones at CB, Kagawa in the hole and Cleverley to Arsenal.

He won't have as good a squad at United, he can't afford to leave weaknesses like Evra and Smalling for exploitation.

If you took every transfer rumour on face value, he'd have exactly the same squad as he does for Holland.

I think he'll do well, but again it'll take time. He isn't going to turn them back into title winners in his first season

Realistically no United fan should be expecting to win the title, challenging for the title is still too much. I'd be happy with a top 4 finish.

At 1-1 I thought wed do it...

Inexperience told in the end, too many basic errors in defence and weren't clinical enough in attack. A fairly tough combo to overcome

Still future is bright, and at least we're not afraid to go for it and have shown when we play well we're good, just need better players innit

At the end of the day, we're more potential than ability. Rooneys probably the only one in the squad with tournament experience, and somewhere around his prime.

Gerrard will retire, he looks out of legs at the Euros, even moreso here. Costa Rica his last hurrah you suspect.

The balance of the side is off tbh. We play with attacking FBs yet play 2 men in midfield to cover gaps, 1 of whom can't really run anymore. Rooney was decent yesterday, but if we play this system he has to live up to his World class reputation and lead from the front. Suarez did on one knee for Uruguay.

Suspect Shaw, Barkley and Jones will come in for Baines, Jagielka and Welbeck for the Costa Rica game. Going forward I'd like:

Sturridge
Oxlaide--------Sterling
Barkley
Wilshere-Henderson
Shaw-?-Cahill-Johnson
Hart

The last CB spot is the big unknown for me. Jagielka isn't international class imo, but Jones isn't a good enough CB yet, and Smalling just isn't particularly good.

Jagielka was poor last night. He doesn't have the quality on the ball for the international game for me, and there are times he is off the pace.

He can be immense for Everton, but he just isn't up to the level required for England.

Jones for Jagielka for me.

Mind you, I'm not resigned to us being out. Italy beating Costa Rica and Uruguay - at the start of the tournament you'd have had them doing that. If they beat Costa Rica by 2, then we need to win by 2 to go through on GD.

Keep the faith!!!

I still maintain that we have been too aggressive this tournament. Yes, it's nice to see, but it's too much. I think 4-3-3 which we used in qualifying would have served us better in the world cup.

Also, if Jagielka is to be dropped, I'd prefer Smalling over Jones. He doesn't have as much natural ability, but is a more intelligent player who reads the game better and has had a far better season for United.

It's nicer to watch but it doesn't yield results. I'd take England winning every game 1-0 in boring matches and winning the world cup/being successful than this.
