Maybe Toure just never saw Mexico's game against Cameroon or Bosnia's game against Nigeria?

Who's the difference between now and 4 years ago for Brazil? I know they had Lucio back then and Maicon was a better player but other than that I'm struggling.

The last serious Brazil side was that of 2002. They were a great team back then, not an ok team with one or two great individuals as now.

I'm confused again: Sideshow Bob Luiz clearly elbows an opponent - yet again - then tries to swap shirts by pulling on the Dutchman's as he falls to the ground, then gets the free kick from the ref. Hard to say which is the greater betrayal of the great Brazilian football tradition - the lousy way this team approaches the game or the even worse way they execute the game against decent opposition. What a bunch.

No the 2010 bunch weren't anything special either but they were a level better than this mob. It's ironic that this bunch got further though.

I bet the Luiz's agent will be getting a lot of calls in the next few weeks. How he could broker such an expensive move from such an average player deserves credit.

You are aware that isn't his usual style of play don't you?

Injuries to Strootman and Van Der Vaart meant he had to employ a drastic change in tactics to accomodate the players he did have, no central creativity is a fairly big problem. You seem as is expected to want to run him down purely because of where he's going rather than what he's done and he isn't renowned for playing for all intents and purposes a back five. You make do with what you have and Netherlands had two world class players that's it.

"You make do with what you have" ahhh the defence of the biased. If he can't play better football with a side like that I despair. It was a choice.

I actually like Manchester United, although not the majority of their fans on this site, so I have nothing against him for going to United. But I was severely disappointed with his pig-headed approach. A severe lack of belief in his defenders, ugly approach and defensive football. Some lovely players benched in that side because he was results only. A man scarred by his results as Dutch manager before, a man who thought nothing of Total Football. I would place them in my top five most disappointing teams. Spain first by a distance.

England have about 0 world class players and would have been crucified for playing the way the Dutch did.

More importantly, I said I hope he starts well because IF NOT he'll go dire and dull results football.

Who were these benched players Dolph who could have made such a major difference, two of his four best players were out injured and it was only two weeks before the tournament started that they shifted tactics.

The Dutch haven't played anything resembling total football for nigh on 30 years Dolph, it was a Cruyff era thing and died out very quickly when they didn't win with it, they've been based around hard work and doggedness since the days of Gullit and Rijkaard.

The world cup is a results busines when you're a contender something we were not, it's better to fail in style when failure is a guarantee than fail in style when success is a possibility.

David Luiz is essentially a more eccentric Thomas Vermaelen.

And like with Vermaelen people are realising just how bad a defender he is

I can't believe Carlisle tried suggesting that wasn't a foul on Robben, Gustavo had both arms wrapped around him trying to hold him.

Luiz plays like the kid that's tired of being stuck at the back all the time. Not something you see a lot at the top level of international football.

Depay the wingback, Clasie on the bench. Better than 5 defenders and Kuyt the full back. Allardyce plays more adventurously than that. Sometimes the name does strangle the brains.

The Dutch even played better football at the last world cup. Got further too. Genius then?. But its fine, results football suits when the agenda is "protect the United manager". They may not have achieved Total Football for a while, but they have tried to more attacking.

its quite amazing that Luiz under mounrihio spent more time running the correct channels ,passing, staying back when needed and stayed in his own half as a midfielder than he does as a defender for Brazil.

Luiz wasn't that bad under Mourinhio- he did an ok job- but this free reign stuff for a defender- its suicide.

He wasn't even close to the ball and hacked the shin, I have seen those given many times. At the very least I think it was a yellow card.

yellow all day- something that can be given as red in a wc- but this is a 3rd 4th friendly game- whats the point.

At a stretch he's a box-to-box midfielder. That at least gives him license to run all over the pitch like a headless chicken. He was alright under Mourinho, that's true. Perhaps he needs a manager who knows how to defend to coach him?

Seriously, who's playing centre back alongside Silva? I've seen Gustavo there, Luiz, Maxwell. It's a shambles.

Oscar had a better than good half I thought. This was a quality Brazilian side, Neymar, Oscar providing the magic, Willian, Ramires etc providing the industry... if they spent some time playing football, rather than a football version of hack-a-Shaq, who knows what could have happened.

Oscar is going down before running into Blind. Right decision

The card is for simulation (of contact)... given that Blind's gone off because of the incident... how is the card justified?
