Post by The Special Juan Sun 10 Aug 2014, 4:45 pm

First topic message reminder :

I didn't even realise the draw had been made.  Murray's got a decent one until the QFs (can we hope Roger and Jo play a 4 hour epic today?), Isner plays Anderson in the first round.  Either a double bagel over a mentally crushed Anderson or 2/3 tiebreaks.  Djokovic could barely have given himself a better draw.  Dimitrov and Stan are draw magnets!!

Draw is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Western_%26_Southern_Open_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_Singles

or

here: http://assets.usta.com/assets/663/15/Mens_Main_Draw.pdf

Gawd it's so true, that serve is a machine. If I could do meme pictures, Sean Bean would be visiting 606v2 Wink

Just as I thought Fed was going to let this set go, he goes and wades into a Murray service game. Yet another weird/close match between these two, they're such difficult ones to call...

that volley was much more like it, no wonder they cut to Edberg, something of the old school reactions in that one.

Isn't Raonic 3-1 against Murray? Still think Federer wins this match but even if Andy wins, I think he'd lose to Raonic.

Yes, great forehand, perhaps not a % shot though, I think he figured he was on to a loser in the rally so had to go for it...sometimes, I even think he just can't help himself and perhaps almost deliberately hits low % shots for the glory of it just like you or I might do when playing against a mate.

By the way guys, how about Pospisil and Sock? Still unbeaten as a team!

That's true Yvonne, although memories of the USO a few years back come flooding in when I think of their H2H. Raonic played like a monster that day and still lost in straights due to perhaps the best Murray returning display I've ever seen, and that's saying something. Still, Raonic has a very good chance and has been taking care of business nicely so far.

I think Fed best matchups are Andy and Djoko for a pleasure watching and mix of weapons.

Have you noticed when they cut to the line judge after a call to see there reaction, there never ever is one? Wouldn't it be funny if just for once they did a fist pump or a little dance or some other reaction. I wonder if they get training about this and told not to do it. I mean, you rarely even get a full smile.

Murray serve has to be up there with the great shots of the game on this performance. Probably a notch below Sampras at his best if we're really asking, but not much in it.

Sure there's only been one Murray service game in which he won the first point. If Murray was needing to build some confidence, not sure losing a double break lead is going to provide it.

Murray Raonic head to head

Raonic does have 3 wins, but they've all been tight matches. Murray's one 1 win was easily done, and at the US Open.

He took Raonic to the cleaners that day, which was extra sweet because Raonic was mumbling before the match about how Murray had to adapt to his game.

Murray's game now sketchier than Cliff Richard's past. He'll do very well to hold here. (From a break down, Shazza went a break up but it's on serve now at 3-3 in the 2nd)

It's a good'un, that's for sure. In fact, if Federer wins this, it's tied at 11-11 - what's fascinating is that young Murray initially had the advantage outside of slam matches, but the last few years old Federer has been leveling matters. Very odd.

I like the Novak - Fed rivalry best for barnstorming quality, but this one is definitely no slouch.

Andy serving to stay in it...

What's the chances of Murray being able to hold serve to stay in the match?

My favourite rivalry too TSJ, and normally I don't mind too much who wins, but just feel that Murray really needed this one.

I remember Murray shredding Federer in Shanghai a few years ago (was it 2012?) and from then on it's not really gone his way in their match-ups.

Whatever the chances were, he used them up once. It'd be a miracle to hold twice, and even then, he only gets to lose on a tiebreak.

I would say Federer needed this one badly, he is losing so many finals of late, 2 Masters final lost and a Slam final lost this year and yet to win anything credible, so if he could somehow muster a Cincy title here it will give him a lot of confidence for USO.

Also he will be 2nd behind Djoko on Race and only 1000 points behind him, so it will make the year end no.1 a three horse race.

Well, he finally got the win in a slam after that then they didn't play until Murray's comeback from surgery. Strange that momentum seems to be with Federer at his age though!

If Fed is in contention for YE#1 it'll be a ridiculous achievement after what happened last year. With Novak's baby on the way and Rafa's injury woes still intruding, though...is it possible?

Aye, 2012. That was the match where Federer served three doubles in a row to concede a break from 0-15, I couldn't believe I was seeing that from a professional player, let alone him. It was a beatdown, though.

I think Federer would have been just fine without it. Murray really needed it confidence-wise and points-wise. But what he really needs is a reliable serve.

Anyway, Federer had better beat Raonic now. But I'm not sure he will.

Well this year he has been playing some Amazing tennis but very unlucky, lost a close 3 setter in the IW finals, Lost a Close 5 Setter in Wim finals and lost uncharacteristically to Tsonga on Rogers masters finals.

Had Federer won 2 of them and this cup we would have seen a new no.1 end of this tournament. Very Happy

Yes he is 33, otherwise when was the last time he made finals in 3 big tournaments and lost them all and yet to score a big title win in a year?

I wouldn't mind supporting Ferrer if that happens, after all Fed has lost to many junks in the past few years [specially late last year, 2011 and 2008] but Ferrer could never catch him on one of those off days.
