First topic message reminder :

I didn't even realise the draw had been made.  Murray's got a decent one until the QFs (can we hope Roger and Jo play a 4 hour epic today?), Isner plays Anderson in the first round.  Either a double bagel over a mentally crushed Anderson or 2/3 tiebreaks.  Djokovic could barely have given himself a better draw.  Dimitrov and Stan are draw magnets!!

Draw is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Western_%26_Southern_Open_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_Singles

or

If Fed was once the king of all the world, is this perhaps the last place where he still reigns? After losing even Basle and the World Tour Finals (both 2 years in a row) this is the only place where RF is still king.

His most won MS (now 6), 2 out of the last 3 Cincis and he has not won a slam or a masters since winning Cincinatti 2 years ago.

Don't agree with that. I think Federer focused on conserving energy when 0-3 or 0-4 down in set 2 and apart from that period good match.

I have to agree that it's a disgrace that these players are allowed to go the toilet when they need to. They should be made to stand in the naughty corner until they p1ss themselves.

Come on seriously, if you can't have a bathroom break at the end of set 2 in a three set match, when is it OK to have one?

Laugh No one will bitch when Federer takes a bathroom break and if Djokovic or Murray do so it's hailed as a tactical masterstroke. All these players have openly admitted they use bathroom breaks tactically. But if Nadal takes a bathroom break the fan bitching by sad losers will be deafening.

Well done Fed, well battled Ferrer. I didn't personally enjoy the match and wasn't surprised by the winner. Ferrer nearly always runs out of gas in pressure matches by the 3rd set...it's become entirely predictable. Ferrer just can't live with the top guys at all....he's 11-50 vs Nadal/Djokovic/Federer...pretty bad for a guy knocking closely outside the top 4 for so long.

I wonder how much Federer has in the mental tank for a deep USO run...a lot as usual depends on his draw, whether Nadal shows up, plus what type of Djokovic checks in.

Not sure why people crying for a Fed win here by questioning his gamesmanship, taking a pee break end of set is a norm issue, ATP allows that and its within the rules, in contrast MTO are advised to be taken at the end of the set, however some players in the past took it regularly in the mid of the set and opponent fans rightly questioned the move.

Had Nadal taken all those MTO's after completion of the set there would be absolutely not question at all.

He wouldn't mind a Djoko here as long as Nadal is out, the main concern is Nadal.

I wish Fed and Djoko drawn on the same draw and Nadal pulling out giving Stan and Murray a chance on the other side.  Very Happy

Nothing wrong with toilet breaks between sets - every player has done it at one time or another.

I never watched it but was as certain as one can be that Roger would win and would have still been as confident when Ferrer levelled at one set-all. Congrats to Roger on his 80th title.

Perfectly true.

Mind you, if my username happened to be something like kingraf (a certain amount of bias indicated there methinks .... chin ) then I reckon the very last thing I would want to draw attention to is the matter of bathroom breaks, in the near-certain knowledge that the mere mention would in turn bring to mind all manner of other, more questionable on-court behaviour patterns, manufactured delays and general 'etiquette'. And - ironically - just at a time when an injury layoff has seen less scrutiny than usual on such tactics.

laverfan was quick to suggest that it really might not be a good idea to open up that particular can of worms yet again ;  but judging by kingraf's follow-up post it seems that the well-meant hint was not taken. Think it's what one might call the law of unintended consequences, aka shooting yourself in the foot...... Wink

Congrats to Federer on adding to his sizeable Masters collection (albeit still some way behind Rafa's) and well done Ferrer for giving maximum effort - as he does in (almost) every match, whether big or not-so-big, he plays.

Seem to think that Federer has the most wins v top-ten guys this year to date, so regardless of how far he can progress at USO, it has become a pretty respectable season overall.

Well done to Federer for winning. Fully deserved.

Is Cincy still a fast court ? There seemed to be some dubiety about this at the start of the thread but I suppose now that he has won it must be fast.

I'm really pleased that Federer won.

I know there's no such thing as "deserving" a win in sport but to lose a third final in a row would not be a suitable reward for his level of play over recent weeks.

He's also only 485 points behind Rafa in the race, having played one tournament less. Not bad for a 33 year playing in the Golden Era...

The truth is no one is really bothered about bathroom breaks as it is only when one player takes them that anyone cares. Those that get worked up about them usually do it as a form of distraction because what really makes them furious is repeated high topspin forehands hit to the backhand. What kind of bully would be so mean. It's a form of gamesmanship and the ATP should introduce a rule to prevent it  Laugh

Maybe Federer has just developed a new problem keeping it in? I seem remember a bathroom break vs Ernie at two sets down. Or the truly remarkable bathroom break to wait for the Sun to move having lost the first set vs Davydenko... Studies on the effect of the sun on your urinary system are ongoing...

For any player. Including Nadal.

If someone can refer me to where taking a leak at the end of a set has been called as much I would appreciate it.

I presume that's not literally what Nadal has been doing for the last few weeks - or he wouldn't still be considering playing next week.

Sharapova got a lot of stick for taking a long break in the French Open final after losing the 2nd set. To be honest, it certainly felt like a old pro move against a first time finalist. I think it's fine to have bathrooms breaks, but my gut feel is that they are very rarely taken by the player that wins the set - unless it's a long, long match, they are mainly taken just to regroup.
