Any and all discussion of things rugby-related is welcome. Restaurant recommendations are openly sought. Introductions to eligible young people would be fantastic. Bullying, jingoism, and wang-measuring is not on.
We need to move forwards not backwards, upwards not forwards, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.

Yeh, another telling quote from the Saffa bullsh1t merchant. As far as I can tell he's done absolutely nothing to support the switch, other than send McInally somewhere else.
Two things bother me in particular:
1. Behind Ross Ford the other hooking options are mince, so it's not like there's a long queue of talent for McInally to forge through. In fact the best of the rest looks to be Turner, so naturally Solomons has gone for Hilterbrand and Cochrane.
2. If Solomons' concern is that McInally needs to learn the specialist skills required, why does this not extend to all the other players he shoe horns out of position? If McInally was an NSQ kiwi or Saffa, with "leadership skills", he'd be ever present at hooker.

I get the impression you are not having the best of days FES and are needing someone (Solomons) to take it out on....

Apparently Michael Tait has had to retire through injury.
Shame for him, but it was always a weird signing for us.

So wait, he was signed while injured, never played a game, then retired?
Shame on the lad, but sound like Edinburgh through and through!
Thank God we've still got Dominguez on a 2 year deal...

What annoys me about both him and Tonks is that Solomons continues to d1ck them around. Make a decision and stick with it. McInally has missed a big chunk of his career in relative terms without rugby, and the plan appears to have been abandonned without him being given the chance. Same with Tonks. Every time he plays at 10 he looks good, and yet Solomons doesn't have the vision to give him a run. If we are abandonning the idea of McInally at hooker and Tonks at 10, let's end it quickly and move them back to back-row and 15 respectively. Let's be honest, no-one has grasped their old positions with any authority, and with Du Preez and Denton out McInally is comfortably the best number 8 at the club.
Thought it was Talei who got motm? actually didn't he got motm in every win in the pool stage? he was immense that season, not even du Preez last season reached that level imo.
As for McInally, as you said great footballer indeed but i always got the feeling he wasn't too kind getting into contact and was prone to miss some tackles. Overall i would say he was a good backrower, not a great one and would have been unlikely to get into the Scottish team apart from the odd A game. I think a better switch may have been to move him to openside.

Ha! That'd take some doing, the last home game against Wales I thought Joubert had joined a samba band.

Nope, in the away game McInally was MOTM. Talei didn't play.
I know what you mean about him trying 7. I agree that would have been a more obvious suggestion.

Yup forgot that one.
I think he was better suited to 8 than to 6, he was maybe seeing himself blocked by Denton for the 8 berth so switched to 2 which is a bit daft as i think he is too tall for a hooker now that hooking is (kind of) back.
That said hope he turns out to be the next Schalk Brits!

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread V - The Fun Continues
While we are in the midweek lull just a thought.
It stuck me while reading a discussion on here about Tonks' goal kicking being at around 70% and hence not up to scratch. It reminded me of when I read Jonny Wilkinson's autobiography when he talked of the many hours he spent after training often along practising kick after kick.
If Tonks wants to boost his chances of making it as a (first choice) 10, does he deserve it, is he out there putting the graft in himself. I'd like to think he has taken it upon himself to go away and develop that string to his bow, then go back to Solly and say - here is what I have done, watch me in training and you'll see my percentages have risen, I can rival any kicker at the club now. Eliminate one of the factors why he is viewed as 2nd rate and give the boss another reason to pick you.
Just to broaden it a bit. I was wondering if anyone here knows which guys at the club do this type of thing for themselves in their own time to improve their weaknesses? I hope it's them all but suspect not! Which guys mould their whole lives around being the best they can possibly be, and which guys just turn up to the club sessions then saunter off home to the xbox?

I've heard Hogg does practice kicking quite a bit on his own, and I think Pyrgos. We hardly see them kick.

I also do wonder about how much control players have over how much they can take it upon themselves to improve.
When I am working my nuts off until the wee hours in my office to do a good job on whatever document it is (sadly, quite a frequent occurrence), I often wonder what the rugby equivalent of that is.
Just an extra half hour a day of practicing and, who knows, maybe Ford would have learned not to overthrow to the tail years ago.

I know Al Dickinson does a lot of fitness and gym work in his own time. Used to use the same gym as him and the rest of the Edinburgh team and they would be in at 7am doing strength work.
Would often see him back in at night doing extra weights especially on his shoulders, neck and back.

Also, with that beard and boyband quiff why was I not surprised to see you sleeping in a single bed?

I do wonder how Jimbo's predictive text came up with "Vulva" and "Zealous" as a recognised phrase! Must be an Essex\Weegie thing!
It's a good question about how much extra work players are putting in. There's no way Strauss can obtain sustained mediocrity to the consistent levels he has without extra practice. I presume his additional exercises include running through treacle, trying to pass the ball marginally forwards and trying to get through as much of the day as possible without being noticed.

Cheers Jimbo! Yeah it's always fun to get the old horn out on camera!
Also big point here chaps, but it's time to stop slagging off Strauss Yeah you read that correctly! He kindly RTd my video and is now above criticism in my eyes.

Also thanks to Strauss I've almost got a complete XV of players who've shared the video.
Although the eagle eyed amongst you may notice that Matt Scott unlike at Edinburgh is in his proper position!

It's the Varsity match today and there is some Scottish interest in the shape of Cambridge inside centre Fraser Gillies. Interestingly spent a year at the Racing Metro academy playing both 10 and 12 before deciding to pursue his studies back in the UK.

I had a little bit of surgery yesterday, had a 10 x 15 cm cycst removed from the crown jewels. Nothing nasty, just been a bit uncomfortable for a while, especially when I ride my bike, which I do a lot.
So consequently feeling a bit tender today and not going to be planning anything to energetic now or over the weekend. Fortunately there is plenty of rugby on the box to keep me amused.
Starting this afternoon with the varsity match. There usually seems to be a few scots playing and this year is no exception with 2 starting for Cambridge and 1 on the bench for Oxford. In the Cambridge line up at IC is Fraser Gilles, who was considered quite a prospect a few years back. He did not get any joy with the Scottish pro clubs and then spent a year in the Racing Metro academy before gong on to Exeter University. He is currently doing a post grad at Cambridge and it will be interesting to see him play.
He is also quite a witty and informed social commentator. I follow him on twitter. He posted one of the most eloquent and well argued blogs about maintaining the union out of everything I read around Indy Ref time.
I wonder if he still harbours any ambitions about a pro rugby career. He will certainly be in the shop window today as the Varsity game, for all that it is an anachronism, still remains a big draw, both in terms of crowds and TV audience. It will be interesting to see how he and the others get on.

They were both mentioned in the Scotsman article as well, but I can't remember their names, neither was familiar to me. One is on the wing for Cambridge and the other on the bench for Oxford, a second row I believe. Am looking forward to watching and seeing how they all get on.

Thanks, haven't seen the Scotsman today as yet. There are certainly a few players with Scottish surnames featuring, always interesting to see if there are any players with pro team potential. Joe Ansbro was a fairly recent Varsity match alumnus. I always used to enjoy the Scotland 'B' and Reds v Blues trial match selections to see what players the exiles system had unearthed.

Plenty room for boobs to make an appearance somewhere...
On a similar theme, did anyone benefit from the Edinburgh Playhouse sending out Adult DVDs to a load of families instead of a video of their kids' summer music school??
One dad said 'it was disgusting, absolute filth' but you can guarantee he made the most of it!
"don't you worry darling I'll take care of this for you...."

whilst we are on the subject of balls , i once had to give a sample in my local hospital, in Thailand.
each sampling room had a light above it green = enter. red = dont ffs come in
In the sample room there was a large black leather comfy chair (reclining) , a nice 46 ' panasonic flatscreen tv, 2 cling film wrapped remote controls, a samsung dvd player model SZM100277633 with 2 high speed usb ports. one at the back and the other on the front , and a large european size recepticle
As one does and before setting off on my thomas-the-tank exercise, i had a damn good inspection of porn publications and hard core porn dvds generously provided.
To be fair the magazines were all in pretty much in order, albeit many of the pages were stuck together and some had been torn out for use at a later date
As far as the dvds went, i immediately recognised these as being knock offs, none original and and none of any locals.
......all was good .......as i was thumbing through them....''african desire''.......''hot teenage dream''........''asian persuasion''..........until..... wait for it......"gay"
wtf !
put me right off that did.

Although to be fair, in Thailand you've got to wonder whether male on male action really is male on male!
This thread has gone downhill fast - who started it??

Just when you think you've seen it all on these boards, we have a conscientous discussion about the technical difficulties of cracking one off to male p0rn in a Thai hospital.
Well, I suppose we've all been there...

Well it was not a varsity match to remember for the Scots. Cambridge got murdered 43-6. Fraser Gilles played ok with the scraps he got to play with, but no real chance to show us what he could do as his team were outclassed right across the pitch. The other lad, George Smith on the wing, did not get a pass then got stretchered off in the second half trying some heroics in defence. Back to the drawing board for Cambridge.

I noticed that one of the Oxford try scorers was a South African centre Alexander MacDonald who's father captained SA against the Lions and, it turns out, has an uncle Donald who was capped (according to Wikipedia) seven times for Scotland in the seventies. So some 'Scottish' interest in the winning side.

Boys, boys ..I must confess that it's not predictive text ( whenever I use that I get MFL lose again) but when the footie World Cup was held in Suuth Effrika I quipped that I couldn't hear the commentators for the screaming vulva zealots. Well, it made me chuckle. So much so I tried to crowbar it into Glove's piece (ooh er missus). Shouldn't have bothered.
Looks like Fozzie will miss the Annual Slaughter of the Effeminates. Still, lets someone else have an easy run out to burn up some Chrimbo calories.

Thanks for all the support guys. I do appreciate it. It is amazing how an operation on that sensitive area of a man's anatomy seems to have touched a nerve with my fellow rugby following colleagues. Of the, 'rather him than me', school of thought!
