I am not upset for myself Jeff, more for the good that it would brought the world in general. However as long as your ego got suitably stroked by getting both the last post and the thread split post, that's the main thing.

What Uni is your "Nephew" going to?

Can't imagine it has changed much since my time other than the fact that they'll probably all be diagnosed with dyslexia and have free ipads.

Reckon money and a fatherly uncle-y chat about being careful with spending / drinking etc will be as good as anything. Most places are equipped and he'll probably eat out most of the time anyway.

In halls you will need music, emergency, long keeping food rations, a T.V licence if one is in the room.

I would suggest a lot of tinned goods, such as baked beans, macaroni cheese and soups.

A poster of some 50s B movie for his wall (something like attack of the 50ft woman).

Some good bedding.

Toiletries

The aforementioned prophylactics although if he shares your charm, these may not be needed.

Some Tshirts of bands that split up/ were popular before he was even born (as an example, the Ramones, ZZ Top, SLAYER)
