US Open Day 13 Saturday The Men's Semis
First topic message reminder :
Well, it's all pointing to a Djoko-Fed final. But can Cilic or Nishikori spring a surprise ? Interesting that, after Fed, Cilic has won the most matches this season. Kei has had two exhausting five-setters but has not had to play since Wednesday, which should be a help.
Some interesting thoughts on another post about the improvement in Cilic's serving. He'll need to do well in that area if he wants to win today.
I think I'm going to plump for a Nole-Rog final. Should Fed win today it would the first season since 2009 he's reached more than one GS final.

To be very honest Kei and Marin has been awesome throughout the tournament and certainly the 2 best players of the tournament.
Kei winning would be awesome for Asian aspirants but Cilic winning is a well deserved one too.
I certainly cannot predict a winner and I guess it will be a blood bath and will finish in last set tie breaker.

If Cilic plays like this there will only be one winner, although I would prefer Kei to do it.

Haha, not at all! I like tons of players, and it's going to be a pleasure to see new faces in a slam final after all these years - I'm glad Cilic won. Federer just wasn't allowed into the match today, he was absolutely nowhere. Very rare to see him so nonplussed in a match. Brilliant play from Cilic.
You would've gotten some seriously long odds on this final at the start of the tournament!

Agree, both Cilic and Kei have been playing well. I kind of like both of them, so not sure who I will root for - probably Kei. They will both like their chances too - they would have expected to face Nole or Fed in the final.
The last few slams I have been thinking Cilic would finally come through only to find every time I was wrong. But finally he is here.

I am not so sure. Cilic played brilliant but Fed was giving him too many cheap points. Kei - on his today's form - will be tougher and will give Cilic more time to cool off, no matter how hot he starts.emancipator wrote:If Cilic plays like this there will only be one winner, although I would prefer Kei to do it.

When was Fed beaten so badly on GS? Maybe by Rafa at some RG.
Looked lost, reminded me of some matches Djoko used to have in 2007-2009, not understanding why he is there on the court.
Lost as a puppy.

Yeah you're probably right.
Fed just doesn't have the legs to dictate from the baseline anymore. He looked so slow out there. In days gone by he would've neutralised this kind of performance and probably won in three tight sets. Guess that's just the way it is. Time waits for no man.

Next few years will be very interesting... I suspect they'll prove all this "homogeneous courts make winning slams easier" nonsense completely wrong...

Fed looked helpless. Nothing that he tried came even remotely close to working.
On paper at least, this was as easy a draw as you can possibly get - he would not have faced a single top 10 opponent all tournament.

At USO I heard it was on 2001 , since then this is the least amount of games he won in a USO match.

Kei winning would inspire Asian kids to take the sport seriously , so in that aspect I would be delighted to see Kei win, I don't even recall whether there was an Asian champion on Men's tour.
On the other hand always been a fan of big boys with big heart and big character, Cilic is so much talented as Del Po and such a nice character, he lacked big heart to fight in the past which got corrected by Goran and he looks unstoppable and scary.
My heart wants Cilic to win and my head thinks Cilic will win but if Kei wins he deserves it and deserves it more, after all beating Raonic at close to 3 AM and beating Stan in 5 sets and Djoko at his best in 4 sets > beating Simon Giles in 5 sets , Berdy in st.sets and papi in St. sets.
Cilic to win, but but will be equally delighted if Kei could win.

Re: US Open Day 13 Saturday The Men's Semis
I'd love to see Kei win it, firmly supporting him in the final. Fantastic to see two new faces though, and I sincerely hope that the rest of the chasing pack take note.
And on Federer: although he got his backside kicked today, if this truly is the end of the Top 4 as an all-conquering force, then how strange that he (with Novak) was the final one to fall. Shows how well he's done to still be here, given that he ushered in this era. He did get absolutely destroyed today though
Plenty of tennis yet to come though, both in the final and beyond! The #1 spot is still up for grabs, a tight WTF race and now hopefully the tour will be full of renewed belief going into the indoor swing.

christ, never would of imagined Cilic or Nishikori taking a slam next outside of the usual four, ahead of a Dimitrov, Raonic type. Brilliant performances by both this fortnight, Men's tennis is truly up in the air now. exciting stuff.

Re: US Open Day 13 Saturday The Men's Semis
So it is two slam winners outside the big 4 this year; I think that is more than what we had expected as the year was starting. And they both came from the players that we have been somewhat forgetting - if not writing off - rather than from the next generation. Even though, I suppose Nishi is still young enough to fit in the "next generation".
