Well our next game against French opposition, back at fortress Murrayfield.
No idea how this game will go, didn’t fancy our chances in Bordeaux but we got a win, against a fairly weakened team, I guess depends how seriously Lyon take this comp.
I don’t think we can read too much into our win last time out, but fingers crossed its the start on the right path, but I fear it’ll just be a blip and normal services will be resumed.

Looking forward to hearing what whocares has to say about Lyon. They are currently 9th having won 4 and lost 5.
They got a win over London Welsh, but let's face it - I'm fairly confident even Edinburgh could give LW a doing just now.
Here are Lyon's recent results:
Lyon 26 - 23 Oyonnax
Racing Metro Paris 28 - 11 Lyon
Clermont Auvergne 43 - 12 Lyon
Lyon 28 - 18 Castres
La Rochelle 29 - 10 Lyon
Lyon 24 - 19 Bayonne
So typically French - some good wins at home, generally poor away.
This should be an Edinburgh win and, dare I say it, a TBP win too. But still, this is Edinburgh so God knows what will happen.
Biggest worry is getting a team together, particularly in the back row.

Judging by the ceaslessly accurate reference point that is Wikipedia, it seems to me that Les Loupes' best players are Emmanuel Felsina (one of France's oldest new caps but a hard arse prop as I recall), Lionel Nallet (class is permanent), George Smith (so THAT'S where he is), Juan Manuel Leguizamón (see Lionel Nallet), Ricky Januarie (no idea he was there), Stephen Brett (he was excellent for the Crusaders, unfortunately for him he was born in the Carter era), Vincent Martin (fricking quick if I recall correctly) and Lachie Munroe (he was good with Auckland Blues).

So for leadership, Lyon have Nallet while we have Strauss
Advantage Lyon so far.......................
PS, can you add some GC style 'mascot' pics to the thread please? A nice wee pic of some wee French hottie may just cheer me up at work today!

Anyway back to the game, half backs January and brett wont travel to Scotland it seems. Which means Loree and some unknown 10 will have to do the job.

You may not believe this but I write my own material.....
Pretty sure Jimbopip is the old boy on here now.
Can't believe ASBO's sulk has lasted this long. I thought the Sturge's promise/threat for independence in her lifetime (and as a weegie she's already close to average life expectancy) would have driven him back on here.

Their choice or the clubs?

No idea mate, just copied it from a site that looked reputable. But considering you have shown me up in terms of my ref identifying ability and now my rubbish choice of tables, I'm suspecting I should take a back seat in creating threads for a while. Clearly I'm no good at it.
I'll go with your table for what it should actually look like.

Re: ECC - Edinburgh Rugby vs Lyon 24/10/2014
Selection wise, probably not a lot to talk about really - can't see there being many surprises in the lineup. We all know Strauss is going to be at 12 so no point saying we want Hurley to be there!
We've got Leinster away next up, which is a bit of a shame given that we'll hopefully get a win over Lyon and should have some momentum for the GPro12. We'll also be without our Scotland players no doubt so that will mean no Dickinson, Ford, Gilchrist, Visser, Heathcoat, although I suspect Fife will be willing to play given he's just come back from injury. Saying that, Leinster will probably be without their Ireland players too, but can't see us getting much from that game.

On the ref, Matthew Carley is the English up and comer. 2nd year in the premiership (I think). Overall I think he's been very good and is currently probably my favourite English ref.

I'd just go with the same side were I Solomons, and give them another shot. If Coman is out then Grant probably comes in with Ritchie on the bench.
Clearly I'd like Cuthbert back at 15, Tonks at 10 and Burleigh at 12, but wish in one hand and sh1t in the other and see which fills up first!

I would expect Edinburgh to win this. Lyon, having come up to the Top 14 for the second time in 3 years have recruited a lot better this time but still very inconsistent (though the whole Top 14 has been a bit strange so far this season).
For the return leg, let me know if any of you guys are coming over and I will direct you to the best watering holes and restaurants here.

Just looked at flights - it's not an easy please to get to from Edinburgh! Or to rephrase, it is not an affordable place to get to from Edinburgh...!
Looking at near 500 quid for two people for flights.

Lyon is an absolutely amazing small city, incidentally.
Not called the 'real culinary capital of France' for no reason.
Just fly to London and then do Easyjet.

Yes it is, it is an amazing little city and a great place to live as well.
Yep, from Scotland it isn't easy (I had to do it for the Ryder Cup) though they do flights with Easyjet on Wednesdays and Saturdays and as the match seems to be on a Thursday it might be an option
Edit: my apologies, the flights on Wednesdays seem to have disappeared which doesn't make it easy at all

There seem to be some decent prices on skyscanner, have to change at Birmingham on the way here but doesn't add too much time to the journey and the return (going Thursday, coming back Saturday) is £124 per person

Stats of the Bordeaux game out: http://www.espnscrum.com/european-rugby-challenge-cup-2014-15/rugby/match/237203.html
UBB seemed to have dominated slightly, Bresler totally anonymous (hopefully he did all the donkey work that doesn't appear in stats..), 3 pens against Nel isn't a big surprise, Leonardi highest metres run of both sets of forwards, i have a gut feeling he is going to be called up by the Argentina team and face Scotland. Edinburgh could be totally barefoot in the backrow although Denton is due back soonly and has logically not been called up.

I do query those stats. Visser made 52 metres without beating a single defender, Leonardi played the whole game yet only made 3 tackles and no turnovers (whereas Tonks has two), Bresler did virtually nothing other than take one lineout throw and concede a penalty and most surprisingly Visser didn't miss a single tackle. I do question the credibility of these stats.

Yeah they are what they are, i don't even know who made them as the game wasn't on tv, maybe teams send these to espn? this is a mystery to me.
Some stats are credible enough to me like Strauss not doing much ball in hands and yes Visser didn't miss a tackle but he only made one! which is more like it.

I suppose Visser has got pretty useful at massaging statistics. I guess you don't miss a tackle if you manage somehow not to be in the vicinity of the opposing attacking player, like his trademark interception attempts which usually result in someone else getting a walk-in try.

On the subject of getting to Lyon, I used to have to travel to Valence fairly regularly and often passed through Lyon on my way. A direct flight to CDG and the TGV to Lyon can be a very pleasant and often cheap way of getting from Edinburgh to Lyon.
Also, for those using skyscanner, the algorithm used for pricing isn't purely based on remaining seats. The number of distinct searches also pushes up the price so don't go searching too often. It's designed to panic users into buying early.

I'm not a fan of Skyscanner - by the time you click through to actually booking your seats, they are a lot more expensive than what they originally quoted you!

It's not necessarily them that do it. There are some very complex arrangements between them and the airlines so it may be part of those agreements.George Carlin wrote:

Also, for those using skyscanner, the algorithm used for pricing isn't purely based on remaining seats. The number of distinct searches also pushes up the price so don't go searching too often. It's designed to panic users into buying early.

Wouldn't worry too much. The ongoing increased cost of heroin, lorne sausage, Buckfast, knives, Wham bars, Dobermans and Kappa tracksuit bottoms with metal poppers on them still prices most of us out.funnyExiledScot wrote:Thanks for that des. When I first read that, I missed the comma between buckfast and knives, and for a moment thought, fair play to those monks, I mean know your market, and buckfast knives does seem like the next logical step. They could quite literally make a killing with that level of diversification
