We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
First topic message reminder :
Missed the game today great result!
City have bought terribly since they won the title in 11/12, 100s of millions and no real certain starters or class players introduced.
They've prospered in a relative decline of the pl, picking up the top players from the non top 4 and the sub elite Europeans was good enough as a base but they didn't kick on and it has showed in Europe and this season.
6 wins in a row for United, city, Spurs and Liverpool in that run.
Top 4 all but secured, big test next week against chelsea.

Embarrasing on so many levels to lose to QPR, however, Hull losing is another lifeline for us. I can't see us beating WHU, we simply don't know how to win & therefore will be relying on Man United

9 defeats in 10 games.
A Fat Sam probably eager to send you to the championship
Man Utd with nothing to play for
I don't fancy your chances honestly John.

If man u beat arsenal 2moro, then Man U do have something to play for vs hull. Hopefully Sunderland get banged by arsenal & chelsea & make their GD to worse than - 25, if we pick a point up vs WHU

Looked offside that.
Also technically was for any fans of geeky rules, your position is taken to be the point of exiting the pitch if you leave without the refs position.

This has been the most depressing season since Hodgson's short stint in charge.
Suarez gone.
Sturridge out pretty much all season.
Gerrard deciding to leave.
Sterling refusing the contract.
Mario Balotelli was signed and surprisingly(!) was rubbish.
Out of Champions League early, Europa league not taken seriously enough.
Cup runs both ended without a final.
I just want to rewind time to last year and Gerrard doesn't slip.

I was a bit sceptical about the game this evening, but good to see Liverpool marked the occasion with the quiet understatement the club has become synonymous with.

Scholes it seems has finally started to become appreciated by football fans, Vieira and Keane getting such a paltry amount of votes is a bit of a joke.

Majority of people voting are under 18, hence Vieira and Keane not registering much. I wouldn't have Gerrard top 5 but kids only know recent players.
Vieira, Scholes, Keane, Lampard, Makelele, Toure, Fabregas all better than Gerrard. All won the league title too.

Gerrard in his prime pisses all over Cesc, in my opinion. In terms of actual footballing ability Gerrard & Makelele can't even be compared, due to them being such different players. Claude was class in his position & protecting a back four, but Gerrard was on another level in terms of general all round play & offensive work with 119 PL goals.
Sad to see him go, but it was time. Shame people trying to de-value his career or ability.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Hull will beat Man Utd.
Still disgraced by our performance today, but on the plus side we are safe and having a great time in Brighton.
I will be rooting for them next season. What a cracking place, great away day surely.

ok westi, we'll go with that
Newcastle draw with WHU
Hull beat United.....somehow
Sunderland lose both remaining games vs chelsea/arsenal
that leaves
Hull 37 pts / GD - 17
Newcastle 37 pts / GD -25
Sunderland 37 pts / GD - ? (currently on - 20, that means Newcastle would need sunderland to lose both games by a total of more than five goals. if it's -25 each, it goes to goals scored doesnt it? which newcastle lead comfortably)

You must be joking
Cesc has never been anywhere near the level Gerrard was in his prime. Cesc hasn't even had a standout moment, whereby he's carried a team or is remembered for doing something special. Gerrard has numerous moments. Zidane, ''I have said in the past that at his peak he was the best in the world. I think it was the summer of 2004 I was having a conversation with Florentino (Perez) and I told him I wanted him to partner me in midfield for Madrid''. Says it all.
Cesc couldnt even hack it in spain & hasn't even won the champions league, whereas gerrard carried liverpool to the trophy.

Gerrard hasn't even tried to hack it in Spain, and hasn't even won an international trophy, whereas Fabregas has won three.

that point is irrelevent when comparing players individual ability. wes brown has a trophy cabinet of pl medals.........
in 2005/06, when gerrard was in his peak of performance, you seriously believe Cesc has topped that level during his career? delusional. stick to watching championship football.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
You're the one who brought up Gerrard winning the Champions League and Fabregas not winning it so you are somewhat backtracking now that point has been shown up to be irrelevant.
Would I take Fabregas over Gerrard yes I would then again I always thought Alonso was a better midfielder than him during his time at Liverpool, depends whether you prefer the more cultured or balls out approach. I always find it hard to overlook that his greatest performance was dependent upon a dive and that his other defining moment was against West Ham.
I can't think of any real defining matches in the careers of Scholes or Vieira but that doesn't mean they weren't better than him overall, it ultimately comes down to big fish in a small pond.

Well if your point of view is so secure and rooted in truth, why must you resort to insults?
The insecurity shines through!
In terms of technique, ball retention, chance creation, vision and playmaking, Fabregas is far ahead of Gerrard.
Fabregas played a prominent role in one of the finest European club sides of all time, as well as a starring role for a team who dominated the international game over a cycle of three tournaments. He's slotted in seamlessly at Chelsea this season, as well.
Can you ever imagine Gerrard doing that?

Gerrard is beyond any level Cesc has even flirted with. Gerrard in his prime makes the Spain teams that didn't care for Cesc.
A bad year and he's being slated. Fabregas barely affected Chelsea's second half of the season in his prime years, Gerrard has only had that ineffectual a season in his twilight. What have you done for me lately fans at their best.

Re: We Go Again! The 2014/15 Premier League Thread
I'm with LiamB/DZ in regards to Gerrard over Cesc. Cesc has barely got near Gerrard's peak level in those prime years. Duty, you can pretty much scrape all that Spanish involvement, seeing as that's team achievement, not individual ability. Gerrard was never fortunate enough to play in a dominating national side, Cesc for England, would of yielded precisely no trophies.
I guess it's a preference with these two as they are vastly different players. I prefer the exciting, rampaging, box to box goalscorer over the great passer & technician of Cesc. Gerrard had numerous moments, which define careers, I'm a fan of Cesc too, but don't see any genuine moments where he's single handily shone & wowed me like Gerrard did in Europe or in the F.A Cup. As Zidane stated, which is what was generally accepted back in 2005, was that Gerrard was playing to a world class level, backed up by his inclusion in the UEFA team of the year from 2005, 2006 & 2007.

Anyeay on the day his lack of legs directly contributed to palace over running Liverpool over and over again and ultimately led to their loss.
I do actually agree, it sums up the mentality of Liverpool at the moment to be honest and it's not like he's retiring but rather has chosen to leave for a different club, all totally over the top.
His overall impact on the Premier League has been quite small and it's no coincidence that Liverpool went from being a very strong team in 08-09 to an also ran the next season, a certain midfielder left at that time hmmmmm.

Soooooooooooo...
2 actually.
Gerrard is a myth, today was nauseating - but we all knew it would be.
2 better players with greater achievements actually retired the last 2 years and we didn't get this Love sacks from everyone involved.

I'm also very much with Ent and Hammersmith.
When Liverpool have been a great team in the past, they've had a hard edge to both their play and their management. Even the affable Bob Paisley had an inner steel beneath his normally chuckling appearance. Gerrard was not good enough for yesterday's match and should not have been selected. The 90 odd minutes were swamped in sentimentality and the antics belonged to a testimonial game.

Well I backed my team at 8/1.
I knew he would get the 90 mins. That was not about football. But as a palace fan I am happy.
We have scored 9 goals to 5 against them in the last 3 matches. We are not a team to take lightly..
Thanks Liverpool..
