Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
First topic message reminder :
Now the season is over, the rumours begin!
Milner/Ings to Liverpool seems likely.
Benitez to Real Madrid, Bale staying.
Falcao is desperate to move to Chelsea.
Otamendi and Dani Alves to Manchester United.
Raheem Sterling to Arsenal

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
While Evans is a good enough CB, he's no better than Lescott / Dawson. However if Pulis persists with his idiotic plan to play four CBs across the back, then Evans's versatility would be quite valuable. I'd refuse to pay any more than £6m though.LiamB wrote:Agree with the both of you on Evans. We need a younger centre back & he'd be a good fit. £10m is ridiculous though, seeing as he has one year left on his contract. If Pulis can wrap a deal up for around £5m-£6m, I'd be very happy with that.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Azzy, Jonny Evans is younger, we need some long term options, given Olsson & McAuley at 35. Agree, £6m would be the max, given he's only got 12 months left on his contract.
Wijnaldum would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, he should be at a top 6 club or higher in the PL. Dutch player of the year ahead of Depay too.
Looks like Palace have thrown all their eggs in one basket to sign Cabaye. Fee rising to £13m. Think he will regret that move & might lose his starting place at the Euro's.

That's why it makes no sense, why would you jeopardize your place in the French squad to play for a mediocre team in the bottom half of the PL? If Cabaye makes that move, France should retire him from internationals with immediate effect as he clearly has zero ambition, drive or common sense.

Well his other option was to come back to us...a club with zero ambition, drive or common sense...so they'd be well suited.

It could just be Darmian being brought in at right back but also as CB cover; Jones, Smalling, Rojo and McNair are all ahead of Evans now for me.
Reading the Skysports piece on Darmian does make it clear why we've gone for him and not Clyne as i'd hoped and it's a simple case of height, LVG wants a back four who all have an aerial presence.
I was thinking that but Darmian is only 6ft and apparently poor in the air!!
Pre season has started, need to get the finger out with these signings.

I'd laugh but it's a really sad state of affairs for you. Newcastle's title-challenging team was my favourite club side of all time, and with the support you guys give every week you deserve to be top 6 at the least. I hope Mike Ashley goes under a bus and someone inherits the club who wants the club to win.GeordieFalcon wrote:Well his other option was to come back to us...a club with zero ambition, drive or common sense...so they'd be well suited.

It's a sad state of affairs currently, but things can change in football very quickly. We could have a top quality international in Wijnaldum & either Austin or Mitrovic by next week, then it makes people look pretty stupid, who are already mouthing off about no progress or no ambition. It's the same with Man U & their lack of signings, it's not just us. Good job the season starts in August & that's when I will judge the performance of our transfer window & not today.

If you aren't good enough for a top club, a midtable PL club is the sweet spot for both salary and Europe wide exposure.

Why would he go and play/live in Milan, when he has the bright lights of Birmingham
Think mid table is being generous for us.

I don't think that would make people look stupid John. Two players wouldn't satisfy the requirements...though it would be a start.
The season does start in August, but surely we should have been working furiously to get people in and settled ready for pre-season, the US trip and ready for the start of the season. Get everyone familiar with the place, teammates and McClarens tactics.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
I think it's over exaggerated the importance of signing players early to adjust to the move & understanding their teammates etc. If you're a quality player, you fit in almost immediately within a couple of sessions. Players have all the power, they dictate when a move happens, not a club furiously working hard to do a deal. I mean Newcastle have been working on Charlie Austin, but he's instead preferred to get married & have a honeymoon. That's why deals don't get done early & left so late.

Maybe its not as important in a decent settled side. I think it carries a bit more importance in a side that scraped past relegation and has been poor for a number of seasons.

Given how tight the pl can be it is inportant to get players in early and let them find somewhere to live etc never mind all the training etc
A couple of defeats in August and you can write off a title challenge.

Also the amount of players being brought in can play a part. Obviously if your bringing in a single player settling in time may not be as important as it would be if you were bringing in 6/7 first team or squad players!

Newcastle are set to spend nearly half of their £60 million summer budget on PSV's Georginio Wijnaldum and Anderlecht's Aleksandar Mitrovic
Heard whispers of Townsend to Toon too.
And Begovic is gonna go sit on Chelsea's bench.

Steer went to school just up the road from me.
Bunn left because he wanted first xi football - so not entirely sure why he's gone to be on villa's bench!

Hopefully these deals can be done. Excited by Wijnaldum the most & I can see why we've gone for Mitrovic over Austin, due to age & resale value. If it is £60m, then that is some statement from Ashley, he knows the importance of being in the PL this time next season.

If Benteke leaves Villa this summer, which i hope he doesn't, then wouldnt mind if we got Austin.
£15m, is that to much for him?
Probably not when you look at how much players go for these days.

Well that would be great starts....just what we need.
Now focus on getting some defenders in...and making sure Siem "sicknote" De Jong is fixed, Cabelle toughens up a bit and shows his ability Sissoko pulls in his ultra high opinon of self importance etc etc and work out which tactics best utilise the players we have.

You just highlighted one issue - Siem de Jong was one of the best players in the Dutch league over the last five years. So was Wijnaldum. You have to hope he doesn't turn out the same way. However get them both firing, and that's a ton of goals from midfield.

Exactly Azzy.
We have numerous players who look good or useful , yet for what ever reasons (tactics, Pardew) we just didn't get anything out of them.
Even players like little Vernon Anita. Hes a very tidy, technical player. Not a big boshing driving midfielder. In the right system he could be very useful.
Playing Colback at left back? What was Carver on?
MacLarens appointment caused a few raised eyebrows...but the one thing I have continuously heard from ex players of his , is that his actual coaching and tactics is right up there. Hopefully he can bring this to use and develop a format that brings the best out of what we have.
But we need some defenders badly!

I've see Joaquin Larrivey a few times while watching La Liga highlight shows. He's a target man essentially, bringing people into the game, think he bagged about 10 goals last year. He's in his thirties I think, so not a long term option, good plan B option.

Re: Summer Transfer Window Thread 15/16
Ehhh, Siem seems like a nice guy and works hard, but he was never exactly seen as the most gifted player. Wijnaldum has always been seen as a huge talent (made his debut at 16), although he spent a bit too long trying to prove he was a creative attacking midfielder/number 10. Since accepting a slightly more controlling role it's all come together for him.Azzy wrote:You just highlighted one issue - Siem de Jong was one of the best players in the Dutch league over the last five years. Wonder all you want, he's Newcastle bound & that's all that matters . You can pretty much pick holes in numerous signings & have doubts, but he's a good player, so hopefully he can now translate his form into the PL.
