A few times a year. He still lives oop north and I don't get up there that much.

He isn't skint. He is fat, but not skint. He works down here a few times a year so I catch up with him then. We never miss our Xmas lunch though.

Of course they F***ing well could have, most inventions have generally come about because of times of conflict and need, and there are probably easier ways of inventing the wheel than killing loads of people over a potentially made up diety.

But the fact remains that the inventions were driven by the space programme, which was your original question.

Whether they would have happened regardless is somewhat of a moot point, and provides absolutely fruitless, dead end rhetoric for any kind of meaningful debate.

Probably not, the very fact that you can show most of the world an invention with a time stamp on it, saves a lot of the hassle or proving you came up with it first.

On a similar note. I was a little distressed a few weeks ago when the local ice cream van changed their tune from Greensleeves to some depressing and unrecognisable 'thing' I've never heard of before. It was bloody awful.

I am absolutely for space exploration which I believe can be unmanned. The Mars lander etc is a good thing, as was the comet landing although there wasn't as much fuss when Bruce Willis did it in the 90's. I am anti-space tourism which I believe a lot of this ISS stuff is about.

They reckon we had a tornado here this morning. It just clipped the coast and damaged a few houses.
Apparently a trampoline was picked up and thrown 80 metres down a street as well.

The media do tend to get hyped up about extreme weather events here. Almost as if they are wishing for a bit of destruction. Then some level headed meteorologist came on (and took the wind out of it) by describing it as only a supercell thunderstorm with 215 km/h winds.

Some poor buggers further south got 146mm of rain in 50 minutes. Quite a downpour.
Lucky I missed most of it here. Only got a minor lashing which lasted half an hour or so.
