Is that wise sean? I hate to be a party-pooper (although at my age it is more or less unavoidable) but someone has to look out for you.
Probably not. I am trying but it eases the boredom. Just need to get into the 'gym' vibe. Or get into a bird's pants.

I wouldn't be at all surprised, there are stories of Roger De Courcey giving Nookie Bear a right telling off backstage if a show didn't go well (in the Krankies autobiography)

Quite a common anecdote from me on here but did I tell you I went to school with Matthew Corbett's (aka sooty and sweep) son? He used to have plastic sheets as he was a bed wetter.

I heard tales Matthew was a sh!t of some repute. Didn't he buy the rights to Sooty off his dad Harry and then ostracize him to the degree where Harry wasn't even allowed to go and do Sooty shows by himself to earn a few quid for fear of being sued by his own son?seanmichaels wrote:rick_dagless wrote:I wouldn't be at all surprised, there are stories of Roger De Courcey giving Nookie Bear a right telling off backstage if a show didn't go well (in the Krankies autobiography)

Anyone else concerned that British astronaut Tim Peake is off to join ISS?

I am rather unenthused by this astronaut story. Isn't his plan to do a few experiments up there to encourage kids to like science? Money would have been better spent on new schools. Even the film Gravity's budget is probably a tiny percentage of the cost of getting him up there and I bet it will end up getting more kids into science than this.

What a load of b*llocks. My kids have already started learning about Tim Peake and what he will be doing up there. They are spending the whole of next terms science lessons charting his time at the ISS and replicating some of the things he is doing. It is a huge thing for the kids at our school and I'd be fairly confident that this is being replicated right across the country if any school science teachers have their wits about then.
I doubt they are showing Gravity in the classroom.
You don't half come out with some sh*te, Sean.
There are lots of things we could do to spend more money on schools. Not poking our noses into the Middle-East for the last 15 years would be a good start, but we shouldn't stifle human exploration. Stuff like this is what makes us great.

I wouldnt dismiss what he said (or for that matter what Tino said either).
If you think of it in a Rocky sense - more kids got in to boxing in the 80s thanks to Stallone than any active boxer.

I'm not sure if you're being serious or not, but is there any evidence other than anecdotal that this is even true?
Even if it was, it is so specific that it is barely even relevant. A niche sport and the whole realm of 'science' are not the same thing. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Re: The Culture Cup Round x - Adam is a naughty naughty boy
I think films and books do influence people growing up. "We Need To Do Something About Kevin" springs to mind, but for what reason, I have no idea!
Anyway, overall, I wholeheartedly agree with Tina and any science teacher not enthralling their class with tales of exploration and wonderment is a sh!thouse and I will happily kill each and every one while screaming "This one's for Tina....as were the other twelve....and the next twelve!"

Gonna say this for Sean's point, a film about space is probably equally as good for the classroom as this stuff. You know what works really well? A provocative question after pictures from a picturebook.

I think I am right. There'll be a percentage following peake, probably kids with good teachers at good schools. Just find space exploration or going a bit further than Branston a bit pointless.

Space exploration is fantastic. We should as a race push ourselves and our brightest to push the boundaries of what is possible. It is how we improve and develop.

Not sure what someone's politics have to do with space exploration. As it goes why I am in favour of it is so much of what we use on a daily basis comes from space travel. Who knows, maybe in attempting to go further and deeper into space we will discover a sustainable fuel source, solve climate change. Who knows.
Also the idea there are better things to spend money on does not really matter. There are always things to spend money on, if we always take that approach we would not have had the Olympics, would have no film industry , no culture and so on.

Absolutely politics is important. Space travel has been one of the most political aspects of the modern age. The cost of space exploration dwarves nhs and educational budgets. Maybe we get the planet right? How much filth did that rocket spew in to the atmosphere on the way out? I may have this wrong but space travel has achieved feck all since they landed on moon. Someone prove me wrong.

That does not mean we have not advanced since 1972, it means we have not been to the moon since 1972. They are not the same thing. There is a permanently manned space station in space now, we have sent a probe to Mars, we have also completed untethered Space walks and set up floating laboratories in space, all advances and all things that would have been unthinkable in 1972. If all we had done since 1972 was been back to the moon a few times you would have a fair point in saying we had not advanced.

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Any news on the job front, Jeff?
I am out tomorrow for my annual Xmas lunch with my (very) big brother. I'll float the idea of opening a restaurant again and get you on board if your job is still sh*te.

Keep your chin up, old boy.
It is indeed his turn but I have no idea where we are going. That is part of the fun, we don't tell each other. I am meeting him at Liverpool Street station at 11:30 and going from there. Could be somewhere decent, could be KFC.
If you want to meet me, then get to Liverpool St at 11:30. You'll know it is me and my brother as there will be a massive TopHat sized chap standing with a handsome man in a fetching pullover.
