try it!
List who you would have as your match day squad for Scotland, then pretend they are not available and try to put out another squad! You'll struggle!
For Glasgow you mean?
Reid
Flynn
Rae (assuming Fagerson is now ahead of Welsh)
Swinson
Brian
Harley
Fusaro
Strauss
Price (Pyrgos depending on pecking order)
Horne (Clegg depending on how you rate Jackson)
Hughes
Johnson
Vernon
Jones
Murchie
Malcolm
Allan
Nicol
Cummings/Uanivi
Wilson/Wynne/Blake
Hart
Clegg (Lyle?)
Griggs
Of those at least 6 are presently injured and Scotland injuries have dragged Allan, Wilson, Price and Swinson away at various points. Glasgow get absolutely destroyed in the backs from call ups although Edinburgh are producing more forwards. It will even up soon one hopes.
Well you can do it for Glasgow, but I was really meaning for Scotland!
If you take out our best players in each position, the drop in quality to the next person on the list is vast!
Look at some examples
Hartley is unavailable for England, so they turn to Jamie George
Kuris is goosed so they turn to Launchbury
or Ireland
SOB is goosed so they go to Stander
or Oz
Foley is knackered so they bring in Cooper
For us
If Dancer is goosed, we look to Horne or meatball!
If Ickle Johnny is injured, we turn to Tim Swinson
If Hogg is out, we look Murchie (or move no Maits)
If Seymour is injured it's Rory Hughs or Hoyland!
Currently it's only centre where we have any real depth!
It's a fair point you're making, but I'd also add openside to the list of "depth" positions. Hardie and Watson are two handy specialists, and I think there's little to choose between them after this AI series. There is, of course, also the option of John Barclay at 7. He's played a fair bit before in that position.
You are looking at ideals. England lose Farrell who is the starting 12? They are so poor in the centres at the moment that after Farrell the present choices are 36 and Burrell. After Joseph, Daly is being tried, Slade has not been given time and Marchant may be the new starter. Who plays 7 for England? Haskell or Robshaw both 6's who can play 7. England have the 2nd or 3rd most depth of any nation and they are struggling to get 3 deep at centre (Tuilagi is not an option til he plays 5 games in a row (the Gilchrist rule)), OS, FB and SH (I like Simpson-Daniel but he is not utilised and beyond Care is unproven). They have better depth than Scotland by a long way.
Okay Scotland starting 23 taken out
Dickinson Dell
Ford McInally
Nel Welsh
Gray Swinson
Gray Toolis
Barclay Harley
Hardie Watson
Denton Strauss
Laidlaw Pyrgos
Russell Jackson
Seymour Visser
Dunbar Scott
Bennett H Jones
Maitland Hoyland
Hogg Kinghorn
Brown MacArthur/Malcolm
Sutherland Allan
Fagerson Low
Gilchrist Cummings
Bradbury Wilson
Price Kennedy/Hart
Horne Weir/Heathcote
Taylor Hughes
Quick note: Realised after posting 4 of my present starting pack and 1 sub were injured. Only 1 of the backs was out.

Well done everyone. And also, obviously, we should all be ashamed of ourselves.
Anyone fancy doing thread number 14? Mesmeric has set a very high standard...

It was the Scottish schools cup final last night with Smellies edging out Dollar with a last play of the game score after Dollar kicked the ball dead thinking it was full-time.
Star of the show was flying winger Jacob Lineen whose father is a certain grandslam winner!

That sounds like just the sort of thing that Scotland would do!
Young Lineen certainly has some pedigree, father played for Scotland and Grandfather for the All Blacks. Hope to see him continue to shine as he moves on in the game.

I read the match report in the Scotsman. Sounds like young Lineen is a handy prospect.

I am guessing you mean Joe Simpson and not James Simpson-Daniel the former England winger who retired a few years ago!

Where am I getting Simpson Daniel from? I have not heard of the winger. Wasps scrum half Joe Simpson.

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XIII - Camp Crystal Meth
I like Simpson as well, but his scrum half basics can go awry at times. He's a wonderful attacking scrum half from the base of the scrum, with great pace, but every now and then you watch him play and the poor fly half is left guessing as to whether the next pass will be aimed at his shoe-laces or above his head.
Still, the point you make is entirely fair. England's 3rd string XV would give our 1st XV a run for its money.

Genge
George
Hill
Ewels
Attwood

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh: Ongoing Banter Thread XIII - Camp Crystal Meth
Saw the Schools cup final attracted a crowd of around 5000, makes you wonder why Edinburgh can't get more in. The Scottish varsity game got in over 10,000 having dispatched over 10,000 tickets. Obviously these are one off games but they were largely attended by young enthusiastic rugby fans.
Makes you think as well that with three universities in Edinburgh, one just outside and with St. Andrews just an hour by train away they could tap into this base. A £10-20 ticket with a drink voucher or two included would be very popular.
The Varsity game was largely student advertised; Edinburgh could come up with a similar system that many up and coming companies do. These companies give incentives to individuals to advertise their products. If Edinburgh gave free tickets to about 100 people from each uni with some sort of incentive for tickets sold they could easily create quite the buzz, or even a small ripple but with very little risk.
When you think that the Varsity game was barely touched on in the media as well yet was attended by a crowd three times as large; it was, by all accounts, advertised on social media and if Edinburgh could tap into that even slightly they might see a huge improvement.
