You'll see a lot of newspapers and an online places reporting that he "wants to go back to London" despite growing up in Birmingham. There is a tendency to characterise black players as lazy and like party boys, which doesn't tend to happen with white players. Same way they're often described as athletic etc.
You're reaching there, Crimey. It's nothing to do with his skin colour.
His holier than thou attitude doesn't help his cause. That and the fact that he breaks down (for umpteen weeks) if you so much as fart in his presence. Good player but not irreplaceable.
REALLY reaching. Getting into some new levels of Liverpool players defend at all costs attitude Crimey.
He lived in London for a few years, does that stupid dance move, cuts a stroppy figure at times and has had attitude mentioned by former clubs.

It's not just a Sturridge thing, it happens with a lot of black players and not just in football but in a lot of sports. If Sturridge was white, the media presentation of him would be different.

Because it doesn't.
If a player of any skin colour, creed or background likes to live a party lifestyle that at times is detrimental to his career then the media react to it.
Andy Carroll
Lee Sharpe
Robbie Fowler
George Best
Ronaldinho
Paul Gascoigne
Diego Maradonna
Jimmy Greaves
The media loves to build up ANY footballer only to then see them fall.

Except Sturridge doesn't have a party lifestyle so I'm not sure what that has to do with it?
Same thing about him having an attitude problem - I don't know where this has come from. He's not happy that he isn't first choice, but surely that's a good thing? No player should be happy just to sit on the bench. I think the only attitude problem that Sturridge has is he lacks confidence, which means when he doesn't score he becomes more of a selfish player and he struggles to fight through injuries. I think the arrogance and lazy angle comes partly because of the colour of his skin. Same as the reason he's been lumped in with 'party' types despite being devoutly religious and having no evidence of being unprofessional.

Strange thing is with the internet is that however oddball a view is you can quickly find someone who agrees with it and it then becomes considered accepted as truth.
And he's gets the party tag because of things like this:

I partly agree with both. The Raheem Sterling stuff was beyond vile and you won't convince me that didn't have some racial undertones.
Sturridge I don't see it as much.

Sterling got all the Dad and gangster stuff. That was a bit racist, definitely, although there is a negativity to any young player seen looking for money. They become gangsters.

To be fair, again, Liam Ridgewell got so much stick for his boasting of wealth and you haven't batted an eyelid. The Sterling stuff was crass, but it's also indicative of a press that knows the lower intellect of its readers will detest those with money.

Rather good second half that from Chelsea. Real statement for the rest of the season. Aguero's tackle at the end was a bit disgraceful, and fully deserved the red card, though more frustration than anything else.
Moses magnificent again, really impressed by his defensive efforts.

Just got back from the game, City should have been home and dry but couldn't finish, some decisions certainly seemed to go Chelsea's way during the game. Chelsea certainly know though how to dig in and do what is required, very much reminded me of an early Mourinho Chelsea team, more than happy to niggle the opposition until they break.

Hi MfC - thought you might be making a cheerful appearance here.
For once, I could only agree with the tv pundits upon whom my Sky subscription is usually squandered. A classic showing of counter attacking football by Chelsea with particularly outstanding forward play from Costa. Loved his goal, delightful mix of skill, determination and power.
Left unimpressed by City's new keeper, more like Juliet Bravo for this older viewer! Feel Hart would have been a better bet today. Meanwhile, Silva once more floated like a butterfly and stung like one too.

Hi guildford. Well since I had nothing to do this afternoon for a change I thought I'd settle in front of the football and rugby (rather conveniently the first ending just before the second began). Been a good afternoon
I confess I had to look up Juliet Bravo, presumably you're referring to the 80s TV show? Any good?
Agree with your verdict, classic case of excellent counterattacking football. Also agree with Bravo: while none of the goals could be mostly put down to poor goalkeeping, I felt he looked a bit unsure and could possibly have done better on them. In particular the Willian goal I thought he was very slo off the line to narrow the angle.
Certainly things went for Chelsea, and they got the better of the referee in general, though I felt that Aguero went down incredibly easily from Luiz in the first half, and City were allowed to commit quite a few niggly fouls with little consequence at times. Still, 3-1 win at City, top of the league, and now 8 on the trot. The turnaround since the switch to 3-4-3 has been pretty spectacular.

Re: 5000-1 - The 2016/17 Premier League thread
Hi again MfC - as you've probably now found out, Juliet Bravo was an '80s tv drama series featuring a lady cop in charge. Not the best, not the worst but a bit ground breaking for the feminists and the name seemed to strike a chord for many viewers at the time.
A cheap jibe admittedly to imply she would have done better between the sticks today than Carlos Bravo although I do feel City would have been better off with Joe Hart. Hart seems more of a shot stopper and, certainly as things turned out, that's what City needed. I accept Bravo wasn't gifting the goals to Chelsea but felt he could have done a bit better with all of them - you've called it for the second, a bit slow to get down for the first (taking nothing away from Costa) and slightly too quick to move (and anticipate wrongly) on the third.

Got no love for David Luiz, but Kun Aguero's 'challenge' was embarrassing for someone of his talent. Fully deserved red card. The melee afterwards was pathetic, more so when a bench warmers like Batshuayi and Chalobah gets involved for no reason.

Yep, Moyes presumably got a good knowledge of the player from when they were both at Everton. I like Anichebe. As long as he can stop picking up injuries, his body strength and unselfish approach should go a long way towards him being a very decent foil for Defoe.

Well at least I hope Klopp realises the need to strengthen the defensive areas in January. It was a poor result, but not the end of the world, it just demonstrates that Liverpool should forget about any talk of the title and concentrate on ensuring a top four finish. We are still a work in progress that is some way still from being a title challenging side. The good early season form has probably lofted expectations a bit too high.

Nah we're only losing to teams beginning with B so hopefully that's the end of it... until we draw Brentford in the FA Cup!!!
Karius has had a shocker but there were another half dozen who seemed to have gone to sleep. More amazed that Klopp was so calm about it but would hate to be a few of those guys in training today.

Re: 5000-1 - The 2016/17 Premier League thread
An interesting weekend. Feels like Chelsea have opened a bit of a gap to those below. That said, I wasn't quite as impressed with their performance at City as some of the reports. Their defending at times was shambolic and they could easily have been three or more down before they equalised. Even their second goal followed a fortunate clearance when Gundogan sliced straight through their defence. I don't get the feeling that they are quite the finished package and I can see them having a dodgy spell.
As for CL, it does already feel like it's 4 from 5. I can't see any of the top 5 having a bad enough run to let one of the other teams back in. I do wonder, for all their 5 star football, whether it will be Liverpool who eventually miss out.
