The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Cari wrote:Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

MeanAs,
Someone who uses 5 to 6 paragraphs would have to be an absolutely fantastic writer to hold people's attention for what others can do in a phrase or two.
I think for the moment, I wouldn't be mentally prepared to write a full novel. I think it would have to be a novella.

Same here, Munsty. If you were a full-time writer, you'd have to produce new material to a deadline whether you were inspired to write or not. That just strikes me as wrong somehow. I write for my own pleasure, and if anyone else likes it, it's a bonus.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
luckless,
I do want to get my writing published in some form or another so it would help if people liked it but like you say, I don't want the pressure to write when I don't have anything to write about.
I have something in the works at the moment but have not got enough in me at the moment to continue where I last finished so taking a break on that.
Something I'm interested in is doing a stop motion animated film but being something serious not lite.

Thats like me. I think too many people who are interested in writing see a novel as the only type of writing. Vignettes, Short Stories and Novellas are probably more entertaining to write for an amatuer. To actually finish a novel you'd need to write on the same topic and idea for months. Some people love that. Others don't.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Exactly Stag. I actually think you need to build up your stamina to be able to write a full length novel.

I knew a few people who said they tried to write a novel, failed and then never wrote anything else. To be honest to do it you'd need to give it the same level of attention many of us give 606.

It's more about sqeezing what most people would normally take 5 or 6 paras to get across into a couple of phrases. The format can be quite rigid, especially if you're looking at entering short story competitions with word count rules. If you're not entering competitions, then you can do what you like! I had a peice rejected once as the word count was just over 8,000 words and the limit was 7,500.

See I relish the idea of spending months on a piece of work and knowing every aspect of back to back, upside down and inside out. Working to deadlines as well are useful. I think that maybe part of the problem why I've gone off the rails a bit in the last 3 years. People like me enter university with a certain amount of immaturity and it hasn't really disciplined me enough into doing work outside of what is taught in class.

Probably my greatest fault is that I write not knowing fully what's going to happen only with a loose outline plan.

Ahh - the Dan Brown Method is the correct term I believe
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Deadlines can be useful, Willy - I loved the fact that the creative writing competition at University had a set theme and a deadline, it focussed the mind; but if I hadn't been able to come up with anything, I wouldn't have been thrown off my course. If you're a professional writer, you'd have to produce something on time and there's the risk that you'd have to put your name to something you knew wasn't that good at all.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Evening all, we had an e-mail sent round this afternoon at work stating that the IT department are going to start monitoring all internet usage (which I thought they did anyway just not very well) Looks like I'm going to have to limit myself to how much time I'm on here during the working day, will probs only be able to get on here in my lunch break now
I guess one positive would be that I'll really up my productivity in the office!
And with the writing convo, I would love love to write a novel but I know at the moment I'm not disciplined enough to do it right now. Need to get back to writing consistently first!

Right, off to play in my semi-final, we're up against the team who beat us 18-17 a couple of weeks back, so touch wood.

dreamer - that's the reason why I got an internet capable phone. Nothing to do with being nerdy - I just wanted to be able to keep in touch with my 'rugby side' . If you haven't got one, a lot of phone co.s are offering them on upgrade these days.

Castres is just one letter short of being an anagram of Scarlets. Curse the letter L!
Aye Hobo - I shall be around here in the evenings I guess
And a bit late but pob lwc/good luck Kiwi!
Hound - yeah that's something I've actually been considering for a while. Once I get £50 on my phone fund I'll do it, only got £10 to go!

What was your 'just giving' site again
Talking of Castres, you remember the big Fijian lock who scored for the Baa Baas on Saturday - Iosefa (Joe) Tekori? He plays for them. Monstrous pack, so tell your lads to keep the ball away from them and get your backs to run the legs off 'em
I'm serious!
Loved Castres, great little town in the Pays du Tarn, and wonderful fans.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ah no, really? so that's two sides we're up against with monstrous packs...again! Twill be like Leicester and Perp all over again, and this time instead of the easier in comparison matches against Treviso, we have Munster! It will be, ahem, and interesting campaign for us
My and my brawd* have already discussed the away trips to Munster and Castres so fingers crossed we can work something out, would love to make both of them!

Get yourself a BlackBerry phone and use the office WiFi or wireless access no way they will know that you are online then.

Prop - yeah I think that's what ours was like but they're clearly upping how much they are monitoring. Guess it was nice of them to actually let us know in advance!
Cymro - cheers for the suggestion, but I can assure you my office most definitely has no wifi/wireless to speak of, we are not technologically that far advanced! Just getting the printers to work all day is a mission....

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Duly corrected munsty. Tekori looks to have really developed as a player. He used to just batter defensive lines, but now he looks for space from what I've seen with the Baa Baas. Perhaps that's how the Baa Baas wanted him to play.
Along with Chris Masoe at 7, he played a big part in turfing Wasps out of the HC in 07/08. That and two dropped passes by Webber and van Gis with the line at their mercy
Great weekend down there though.

erm...my God I've just realised how bad my memory is, I'm really struggling to think of what's been said in here the last 3 days.
There was the analysis of the BaaBaa's match on Sat/Sun
Today obviously heineken stuff.
I actually can't remember much of yesterday
That was a rubbish catch up, sorry!

Today we talked about the best type of breakfasts, superhero movies and the HC draw. Yesterday was music and a bit of excitement before the draw. I didn't really venture in here on Sunday but presume it was about the Baa-Baas match.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Good evening all. Everyone happy with the HC Draw then?
Some great meet-up possibilities!
Still think a trip to see Connacht play Toulouse in Galway would be awesome.
What I really hope is when Ulster are in Leicester then Munster are in Northampton or Leinster are in Bath on the same weekend. That way I might be able to do a double header.
The Chef has been cordially invited to NI. He will be well cared for if he makes it.

Rava - I am happier then I was. Considering trips to both Munster and Castres depending on fixtures so we'll see! From a Scarlets perspective, we HAVE to win our home games to have any sort of chance. Losing to Leicester at home last season really cost us.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Ravtradamus. I don't get people who moan about draws. The right attitude is to get on with it whoever are the opponents. Ulster have an advantage in their toughish group as they have played Aironi before. The other two may be caught cold down there. Realistically a good second place or an Amlin spot awaits them I think, funnily enough depending on what points Connacht can get in their group.
As to the Scarlets, second place in that group won't be good enough. They should win at home but I can't see them winning more than one on the road. It will be fun giving it a go.
