The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Cari wrote:Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I thought the Russians played very well - just ran out of gas. As an Ireland supporter I have many (unhappy) memories of my team doing that. Some of their players were seriously speedy.
Very enjoyable game to watch, although only saw the 2nd half.

I have just been through the OUP sale catalogue - potential bill for books I want / need £156.96. It is really good value when they take 50% off the price in their sale, except when you see that the starting price was £110 (that is not a mistype)

Kia: yeah I am, always been interested to read it, plus the footnotes makes it interesting as to how much of it is bull!!

Ther are HUNDREDS of interesting books out there, many of which are life-affirming, enjoyable and readable. Some are even interesting.
There are also some books which are rubbish, badly written, depressing to read, and a waste of shelf space. Their only possible useful function is to prop up a wonky table.
Isn't it just possible that MK fits into one of these catehgories?
The most liberating moment of my reading life was the day I put down a half-finished book which had bored me to tears. never again did I feel the compunction to finish a book I had started. The standard / seminal text in my field of research is THE MOST BORING book written on the subject. I still haven't read it although I have tried, God knows how I tried...

Kia: i've just always had an interest in how his views came about and the way in which he raised an army. Just personal preference I guess and it does make me giggle when it says "when i was a labourer" then the footnotes states "hitler was never a labourer"!!

Good morning guys. Hughie thought you made a super point last night. Notch?? (I think) pointed out the IRFU are trying to reduce amount of foreign players a province can have to 4+1 Project Player. You suggested it could have an adverse effect in the future.
Its a good point. Things won't always be so rosy and its important not to get carried away with success. We may need that extra NIQ in future. Its like people who complained at how small Thomond Park was developed to, saying it should have been 35,000 etc. But Munster won't always be top dog (happening already ) and a 26,000 stadium is a better fit.
Anyone answer me a work related question. I am obliged to give 1 weeks notice if I want to leave my job. However I have accrued over 2 weeks holidays. Can I use them to leave immediately if I wanted to do so?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Read your contract. Unless it's specifically excluded they can't stop you. They may quibble about the notice requirements for taking holidays. On the other hand they may be glad to see the back of you.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
To be honest Glas they would be Flip without me at the moment. I can't decide to let them know I have interview today and they are looking for a start ASAP if I pass the interview. It would be good to give them the heads up but on the other hand if I don't get the job I don't want to broadcast I'm unsatisfied in this job. Wait and see or let them know now?

Thats what I thought Grey If I don't get this job it could be a long time before I find another than I want.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
If you didn't need to ask them for a reference play your cards close to your chest for now. How much notice do you need to give of holidays usually? It would urine me off as an employer if I was depending on you for you to claim your holidays in lieu. On the other hand an employee asked us once how much notice we wanted and we told her she needn't come back after lunch.

No to be honest they really need me at the moment. I'm covering 3 different jobs at the moment as I speak multiple languages and have been trained on multiple accounts. To be honest its only by luck I get away with 1 weeks notice. They way we work here is after 6 months of "probation" you sign a new contract. With the new contract you need to offer 1 months notice to leave/or be given 1 months notice to get fired. With the probation contract it is 1 week. I'm here nearly 8 months but as my boss was on holidays I haven't actually signed the new contract so still 1 week for me
I don't want to do them an injustice but I spoke with the manager of the place I'm interviewing today and they said they need someone to start yesterday. I'm gonna gauge how decisive a factor it is but its not worth losing out on a better job over it.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Stag, you mis understand me. If you get the other job, give in your 1 weeks notice. If you want to claim that as holidays you'll tread on their toes but you are unlikely to be flavour of the month anyway. Until you get the new job though just keep your trap shut, innit?

Yes thats what I'm inclined to do. However equally I could imagine our HR team and my boss saying to me "why didn't you tell us about this we could have planned for it etc". Looking forward to the interview now. Theres a great atmosphere at interviews. Reminds me of the tension in an exam hall or a lift between two strangers especially ones going to the same floor

Companies always do this. It's just them trying to put you on a guilt trip and a manager moaning about extra work coming his way.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
If you're that concerned about the HR department's problems don't go for the other interview. They really don't care about you though, honestly. They have their hearts removed as part of their training. There is no benefit of telling them before you are offered the new job, unless you think that they will offer to match the pay offered in the other job for you to stay, and in those circumstances you would want to stay. If you dont or there's no chance of that keep your own counsel.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Good advice boys If I am asked when I could start should I mention accrued holiday time. Or just say it will be a week
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Say it's a week. Give yourself time to decompress.
If you're the best candidate and they want to offer you the job they're not going to give it to their second choice because they can't wait 5 days.
And if they do, well you really don't want to work for a company with that kind of attitude!

There is no second choice currently
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Stag tell them you need a weeks notice and when they give you the job tell your current employer, simples. And then if your current employer let's you use your holidays take them anyway and give yourself a few days to recharge and get your head set for the new job

A woman after my own heart!
I try to finish every book I start reading, but if it's not really grabbing me or I'm not getting into it despite really wanting to get into it, I'll put in on the shelf and start something else. It's not as though I can't start the book again in the future, when I might fare better with it.
When I was at university there was a one module where we had to write about one of two novels, Jude the Obscure or Great Expectations. I began reading Jude the Obscure and it was okay until I got to the bit where he arrives at Christminster and senses the presence of all these former students - a big list of them and for every one I had to go to the notes to see who he was referring to, and I thought 'bullocks to this, I don't care who he's referring to.' I put the book away, picked up Great Expectations, and discovered one of the most wonderful novels I've read.
Oh, and good morning all

Do you know something that's amazing? The water on this planet is all the water there's been on the planet. So some of the water that makes up my body, or yours, could have made up Abraham's body, or Moses, or whoever. Some of the water in my bath this morning could have been in Archimedes's bath.

Great idea for a story there Luckless. Tell a story from the point of view of the water and what it has seen over the ages. Or how the water of some persons starts affecthing how another asks.
