Going to Dubai and then Hong Kong. I should post on the Travel section to get some tips. Galted is a seasoned traveller who would no doubt have some wise words of advice.

oh OK. Been to both places.

Dubai - impressive buildings but thought the place lacked soul. So goddam hot. Caught an old abra (wooden boat) across the river to some marketplace... quite exotic. You don't get hassled by carpet sellers (unlike Asia) but I remember 'running the gauntlet' and then grabbing the first cab back to the hotel air conditioning. Check out the Burj Khalifa (expensive to go up to observation deck) and out to the Palm islands and Jumeira. That's about it really. I did some work on the Intercontinental Hotel... a couple of km inland off the widened part of the creek at Festival City.

HK - really like to visit there. Vibrant and fast-paced. Great food and service. Mostly very polite people. Getting around is so easy.
Be careful on the other side... the further west you go towards Shenzhen the more brazen some folk get. Oriental version of inland USA.
Not sure whether the Y-shaped bridge to Macau-Zhuhai is open. If so; maybe worth an overnight trip with some Portuguese tarts for breakfast?

Haven’t been to either. My advice would be to change your itinerary to include Utrecht and Reykjavik instead so that I can give you advice.

Useful advice Galted, although not as useful as PJ's which was actually useful.

If you take the Eurostar to Rotterdam or Amsterdam you’ll need to keep your ticket to exit the station, unlike Paris and Brussels.

You could have mentioned that before I set off!
