Had some Northerners here yesterday installing a solar battery. Nice blokes. Gave them a couple of pots of tea... they were here for over 6 hours. One from Lancaster, the other from near York.
Count your silverware, PJ.
lol. No, they were as placid as two sheep. One looked like a young Robert Plant... the other a bit like Stuart Broad.
Very polite chaps. I had to invite them inside for the cha. Talked about the red and the white rose and the technology of new batteries.

If you give them tea, they will guard you with their lives, if you had not done that... Count your silverware.

To be honest mate, if anyone is going to survive the weather, it is the Scottish.
Barely an inconvenience up there, southerners would have been in the storm shelters that they all own in case of a stiff breeze.

I was nearly killed by a falling window panel in Notting Hill Gate.
Some old drunkard who witnessed it said: "Geeez you were lucky there, mate!" There was a warning not to go out but I tried to slip out to pick up a pizza... nearly paid the ultimate price. I heard this whooshing sound and just managed to walk on by as a large window panel (curtain wall with aluminium frame from 1960s?) smashed on the pavement right beside me. The debris didn't explode out... it was quite contained where it landed.

Coincidentally, I was once nearly killed by a flying pizza whilst out buying double glazing.

How's it going? Do you still take the DLR sometimes?
Yep, three days a week. Very relaxed mode of travel though everyone goes a bit feral once the doors open at Bank.

Every month, my team and I order a snack box online which comes from a random country each month.
This month it is from Thailand... Some weird and wonderful snacks in there.

Indeed. I went out for a 7 mile run during the worst of it yesterday lunchtime- mostly fine but got totally soaked and had to run through some knee deep puddles.

Not so hot these last few days but sitting here in the late afternoon sun is pretty nice.
Not up to that much... I did a few things that needed to be done today.
I'll watch the NRL/AFL prelim. finals in a few hours. Think Storm and Tigers will win but I would like to see the Sharks beat Melbourne again.
How long does it take to get to York from where you are? A few hours or a bit less?

Haha, you are thinking in Aussie distances.
Takes 25 minutes on a train from here. 35 from home.
We have a game against Crystal Palace this weekend, which after the start we have had is a must win.

You are near Bradford or Leeds aren't you?
Yeah, Newcastle sure need a win.
Bee swarm next door. Might go out and watch the bloke try and find the queen - for a laugh. The workers seem very angry!

What type of Bee? Normal honey, or some crazy Australian thing that can kill by making your organs explode somehow?

Just your normal honey bee. Someone has a hive nearby.
I think they peel off periodically (new queen?) and produce new nests every now and then. The guy got the queen and they all flew into the box. He'll probably dump them somewhere near a park or golf course... I bet. Nearly dark now.

I don't mind bees at all but I'd prefer to leave the keeping of them to the experts.
The only good place for a hive is where the washing is hung out to dry... not far from where this other neighbour has the hives.

Ah, fair enough, bees and chickens I always think are a good idea to keep in theory, like camping, but would actually be more hassle than its worth.

Saw a documentary on wasps too Jules. The expert said they were much maligned insects considering they also pollinate and keep other 'pests' at bay. I take his point but they still scare me a lot more than bees. I didn't realise some bees can also sting repeatedly.
How is your roof space? Did they clear them out?

Yeah - a quick spray into the gaps in the brickwork from the outside and they were gone within a day or two. The nest is still in the loft, as they don't usually remove them.
We did think about leaving them alone, as they would have gone around now anyway, and they would have built a new nest somewhere else next year.

Always best to leave the nest as it will stop other wasps building a new one nearby.

Does this also apply to cobwebs in old dungeons to stop other spiders spinning new webs?

Re: Music Section Morning Tea Society
Morning all.
It was a bit chilly here today.
I've got some Kiwi taekwondo kids and coach staying here for the ITF World Cup. After sparring around, kicking a football... they all (3 of them) jumped in the pool for over half an hour. They did a great job churning up the water - mixing the warmer top layer with the cooler bit below.
They are at the weigh-in now. The actual comp starts tomorrow.
As an aside - I went in on August 31 (equivalent to your late February) and came out feeling quite numb... yet invigorated. It was 13 degrees then, probably around 17-19 now.

I once attempted a swim in the sea when the water temperature was 8. Didn't last very long due to intense pain and an inability to breathe.

Yeah, I think 10-11 is the human threshold. Similar to the cold water around Alcatraz. 13 feels pretty cold still.
The competition is streamed live starting tomorrow... lots of ring damage no doubt.

Yes, same as the South China Sea. It's like swimming in lukewarm tea.
Here you really notice the difference in sea temps up and down the coast. The water in Queensland is always warm. North coast NSW is noticeably warmer than around Sydney. It gets colder towards Victoria. We had record 26 for sea temperature last year. Usually 24 max. in summer.
