If there was a fist version of Top Trumps, a searing summer fist would be one of the most valuable cards.

Morning Galted... how's it going?
It's more pleasant here now (with a faint sea breeze) but still 2-3 days to go of this so-called high intensity heatwave. I'm coping better with the heat this year for some reason. Playing it smarter I guess.

Good thanks, PJ. Pretty mild here, hasn't been cold enough to wear the trapper hat Galtova bought me a couple of Xmasses back which is causing some strife. Hopefully we get one of those cold spells soon, the type that helps control the Northerner population.

I'd love to wear a trapper hat around here. Would look good juxtaposed with summer casual.

Morning.
Not so bad indoors this evening, rick. It was pretty hot outside today though.
Hosed down a white pigeon today. It looked very stressed sitting out on the fence. I was watering nearby so I focused a light spray on it for a couple of minutes. It didn't move and it got a right proper drenching.

Morning all.
Off to New York for a long weekend with my mates in a couple of weeks and was checking temperatures with my friend who lives there. He said the wind chill is brutal at the moment so that's me off to the shops at lunchtime to buy a big f*cking coat, hat, scarf, gloves and woolly socks. Being a hard as nails Scotsman, I've never had cause to own any of those things.
I won't buy a trapper hat though, because I'm not a c**t.

Yes, my good deed for the day.
Doesn't seem that long ago I was hurling sharp pieces of blue metal gravel at it. It had a different look in its eyes that day though.
Enjoy NY when you go, fly. See if you can throw up in Trump Tower lobby (extra points for security guard's shoes) and post a pic up here if you can.

Jack Wolfskin supes?
Never been to NY, I look forward to your review.
I did a good deed yesterday by helping a guy who needed a jump start, though it turns out his starter motor was shagged so not much help after all...

Re: Music Section Morning Tea Society
I might have to go with Jack Wolfskin - early weather forecasts reckon the polar vortex is going to hit New York over the next few weeks so expecting a lot of snow. I'm going to need something waterproof.
Haven't been to New York before but intend to spit on Trump Tower. Meeting up with 5 mates and we've booked an apartment for 4 nights. Going to watch some basketball at Madison Square Garden on the Sunday and then find a bar to watch the Superbowl in. I don't have a clue about either sport but reckon alcohol will get me through.

Used to be able to get the starter motor going on my old crappy Peugeot I had at Uni by hitting the plate with a hammer.

We have a cold snap en route, the wind kind of ignores the fact that you are there. But you can warm up, you can't cool down, so I feel for you.
I have to nip over the Pennines tomorrow to visit the old man, so hope it doesn't snow as my car useless in the snow.

That's true... was thinking about that very thing today - whether intense heat or cold is worse. Came to the same conclusion as you.
Remember Swannysgirl on here? She lives in Bollington and used to take photos of the snow in the Pennines in winter and post on FB a while back. She captured some amazing landscapes.

Been pretty mild down south, hasn't required the Wolfskin yet, let alone with fleece inserted.

Plus, with hypothermia, you just kind of feel warm then fall asleep, rather than trip balls, and go mental.
Pennines are lovely but harsh in winter.
Mild down south instantly means gloves and sheep wool cardigans,

I bought a Wolfskin - I'm not proud of it but needs must!
It's a properly padded affair so need for a fleece insert - those are for nonces.

I always got told (by a police friend of mine) that NONCE, was derived from a police radio acronym, meaning "Not of Normal Criminal Element"
Wonder if that is true?

I like that big circular ice disk in the States. Reminds me of an old record turntable... sort of.
Just looked up nonce - prisoner deemed worthy of sexual attack from other prisoners... similar to what your cop friend tried not to say.

rick_dagless wrote:Did it describe the etymology of the word?
1. From Middle English nonse, nones, a rebracketing of Middle English to þan anes, for þan anes, to/for the one (occasion, instance)
2. Unknown, derived from British criminal slang. Several origins have been proposed; possibly derived from dialectal nonce, nonse (“stupid, worthless individual”), or Nance, nance (“effeminate man”), from nancy or nancyboy. Another theory is that it is a shortening or dialectal pronunciation of "no(t) once", a common defense of sexual predators in court of law.
3. Not On Normal Courtyard Exercise.
