The Crucible is alive again to the sound of cues smashing into the cueball for the 2019 Snooker World Championship.

On Day One the champion Mark Williams got off to a steady start to lead Martin Gould 6-3. Ding Junhui also leads 6-3 against Anthony McGill and Neil Robertson is home and hosed leading debutant Cypriot Georgiou 9-0.

Dave Gilbert levels at 1-1after yet another miscue from Kyren Wilson. I agree with JV he miscues a lot. Some people putting it down to the fact he uses new anti-kick chalk.

The Quarter-Final line-up is as follows:-

Predicted winners in bold. I think Higgins will strangle the life out of Robertson's fluid, attacking game.

Kyren Wilson seals the third frame to lead 2-1. Scrappy stuff so far if truth be told. Ali Carter is off to a flyer and leads Gary Wilson 3-0.

Gary Wilson will feel better now he has his first frame on the board with a century break. He heads into his mid-session interval trailing Ali Carter 3-1. On the other table it remains pretty scrappy but David Gilbert levels it up at 2-2 as they go to their interval.

A good break of 60 from David Gilbert that. He takes the frame and leads 3-2.

On the other table we could be in for a marathon frame. The balls have gone very scrappy with lots of reds and high value colours out of commission.

Kyren Wilson levels it up at 3-3. Both players spurning chances. On the other table the marathon frame goes on.

A good frame for Gary Wilson to take. A 42 minute frame that got tactical. Carter still leads 3-2.

Gary Wilson in again with a good chance in the next frame following a loose safety shot from Carter.

Gary Wilson well on his way to levelling this up at 3-3 and is eyeing another century break. Good stuff from him.

Break of 86 and its 3-3. On the other table Gilbert missing blacks off the spot for fun. Kyren looks jaded but he's still doing enough to lead 4-3.

Gary Wilson's hot streak looks like it will continue. A break of 55 puts him in the box seat. Does Carter have a counter-attack in him here?

Starting their QF's shortly will be Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire. On the other table will be Neil Robertson against John Higgins.

Great start by Trump. Big break and one visit to win the frame. Leads Maguire 1-0. Higgins 55 points up but still enough on the table for Robertson as he has a half-chance.

Robertson giving Higgins a taste of his own medicine. He pinches the frame with a great pressure break. He steals it on the black and leads 1-0. Great first frame.

Robertson continues to look unbeatable and goes 2-0 up whilst Trump is putting Maguire to the sword. Looks certain to go 3-0 up.

Higgins wins a scrappy third frame and he needed that. He trails 2-1. Judd Trump looking good to go 4-0 up at the mid-session interval.

Scintillating from Trump. 4-0 in about an hour. 117-7 in terms of balls potted. Probably won the match in that first half-session, though I wait for the expected downturn.

Commentators fawning over Robertson's performance, but Higgins has had good chances in all four frames, admittedly only taking one such chance.

Much tighter sixth frame....same result. Trump takes it to lead 6-0.

Difference in levels between Higgins and Maguire is massive though. Higgins very tough challenge....Maguire powder puff.

Maguire stops any idea of a whitewash and pulls a frame back. He trails 6-1.

Trump takes the last frame to lead 7-1. Too many chances spurned by Maguire in that last frame. On the other table a very tactical and long frame lasting over 55 minutes goes to Higgins. Robertson with a 3-2 lead.

Robertson has built a handy 42 point lead in the 6th frame and runs out of position. Time to play safe.

Another tactical frame now that both players have had a chance in. Safety bout on the last red. Robertson 54 Higgins 33.

Higgins loses patience with a long safety bout and goes for a difficult red and misses leaving Robertson in to mop up the frame. Robertson leads 4-2.

Another long frame here and it could be the last of the session.

Robertson in with good chance here to make it 5-2. Do it in this visit and they'll fit the last frame in.

But he can't take the chance. Higgins in with a chance to get right back into this frame.

Robertson in first but just cannot maintain control of the cueball. Higgins in with a chance here to punish Robertson.

Matchplay snooker at its very best. Higgins lands a break of 72 to seal the frame and get out of the session 4-4. Considering he finished a tight match late last night this is some effort.

In around 45 minutes this evening's matches get under way. Gary Wilson resumes 5-3 up on Ali Carter and Kyren Wilson and David Gilbert are level at 4-4.

Yep, Higgins will be delighted with 4-4. Robertson on the other hand will wonder how he's not come away with some kind of lead from that session.

I thought Maguire might at least make it competitive before his inevitable flaking and meltdown when a victory looks possible. At least we're going to be spared a repeat of that all too familiar tale, albeit it would have been nice to see Trump at least tested a little. No doubt he was outstanding in that session, though.

I have learnt my lessons over the years not to expect a lot from Maguire when the chips are down. To be honest I did not expect him to really test Trump. Judd looks set fair for the final if truth be told but then that is when the real hard work begins.

Dave Gilbert in again and scoring heavily again after a Kyren Wilson mistake. He looks set to make the score 6-4. Much better from him this evening.

Gary Wilson has not got started yet this evening and Ali Carter looks set to level the match at 5-5. This match has been odd. Carter won three frames on bounce, G Wilson won five frames on the bounce and now Carter has won two frames on the bounce.

Kyren Wilson needed that century break and hopefully that will get him playing as he can. He trails Gilbert 6-5.

Now a chance for Gary Wilson. In at the table with a chance.

But no. Only 21 points on the board.

But Carter cannot punish him. Gary Wilson gets his first frame on the board this evening and edges back ahead at 6-5.

Kyren Wilson misses a great chance and thumps the table in frustration. David Gilbert now has a real chance to increase his frustrations.He looks poised to go into the interval 7-5 up.
