QF2 - Match Thread - New Zealand v Ireland - 19/10/19 - K/O 11:15 BST
First topic message reminder :
Thought I'd get these made nice and early for a few reasons - but one being that we're already now looking ahead to the QFs with several teams having finished their group stage, so it's all heating up for the proper knockout stuff...barring any more disruption.
NZ
Team: B Barrett; Reece, Goodhue, Lienert-Brown, Bridge; Mo'unga, Smith; Moody, Taylor, Laulala, Retallick, Whitelock; Savea, Cane, Reid.
Replacements: Coles, Tuungafasi, Ta'avao, S Barrett, Todd, Perenara, Williams, J Barrett.
Ireland
Team: Kearney; Earls, Ringrose, Henshaw, Stockdale; Sexton, Murray; Healy, Best, Furlong, Henderson, James Ryan, O'Mahony; Van der Flier, Stander.
Replacements: Scannell, Kilcoyne, Porter, Beirne, Ruddock, McGrath, Carbery, Larmour.
Venue: Tokyo
Referee: Nigel Owens
AR1: Pascal Gauzere
AR2: Angus Gardiner
TMO: Graham Hughes

Very poor from Ireland, so many mistakes. All Blacks so many levels ahead. Well done to them. Congrats Taylorman and the other kiwis on here.
Very frustrating and sad to watch.
From an Irish point of view Jordan Larmour one good thing from our World Cup.
Again we’ll done New Zealand. Will be a great game next Saturday.

No,missing touch from penalties, poor passes and fumbles under no pressure from have been a feature. It's been like that from the start and we never gave it a rattle at all.

I feel today’s results puts pressure on Wales to not only just win tomorrow, but get a big win. England and NZ looking very good, and France are worse opposition than Australia and Ireland.

Commiserations Ireland. Well done New Zealand.
Ireland completely out smashed and out played today.
We’ll have the Guinness waiting for you in fridge when you get back to drown the sorrows. We’ve got bugger all do do so may as well nip to the shops and be neighbourly.

Very similar scoreline to England vs Australia, except from reading this, Aus were a lot better than Ireland

On that performance how could Ireland ever have been considered number one team ion the world?

Nah. He’s off home to at least coach closer to his family.
Scotland should take him in a heartbeat. Ironically he’d be great for us and Toonie would be great (as a backs coach) for Ireland

Congratulations to the All Blacks, the most comprehensive win over Ireland ever. Ireland had a semblance of parity in the set piece but were totally outplayed everywhere else. Too many Irish players looked past it and I don't include Best in that who left every last bit of his rugby on the pitch and the send off from the crowd was testament to him being a world class individual.
Schmidt too showed what a world class coach he has been for Ireland. He took Ireland to new heights and forced New Zealand to rethink their strategy against them. His problem was that this team is past it's sell by date and there simply aren't the players in Ireland to sustain the standard he managed to take them to.
Thanks also to Steve Hansen who was gracious in victory (unlike some fans on this forum).

Because the no.1 rating is earned over time and not an instantaneous picture of where a team is right now. A year ago this game would (or rather should) have been a good deal closer. It does seem that Ireland have gone backwards very quickly since that high point.

Walloped. NZ better in every facet of the game. Ireland didn't fire a shot. You can't win a rugby match when you drop the ball every time you have an opportunity to gain a foothold.
The only silver lining is that it's half 1 on Saturday and the weather is Poopie enough to justify staying in the pub.

It is unfortunate for Ireland that I think this WC came just a year or two to late for this golden generation of players.
They should not forget the highs they have achieved though and there are good young players coming through.
A bit of rebuilding required now by Farrell but they will come again.

Re: QF2 - Match Thread - New Zealand v Ireland - 19/10/19 - K/O 11:15 BST
A relief actually. Destroyed by an exceptional team in every area.
A relief. An era is over. We got so far with Joe Schmidt, and people may grumble, but it was a distance ahead of where we usually were. A concentration on team rather than one or two 'special' individuals.
But it's reached its limit. Time to attempt to move forward again. It kinda was no surprise and maybe symbolic that the younger replacements tried to up the pace, stretch the passes, change the direction of attack. Of course it was the final moments and the ABs had done their work. But space is space is space.
It's not rocket science really. You need to find it and have the skills honed and practiced to find it. But the ABs prove it's there if you're prepared to play a game at all levels to find it and have the right kinds of fitness to find it...from school to International. Ireland have to speed up, give in to offloading, become proficient at it, practice it hard, practice high intensity, space finding rugby at all levels. And be prepared to be embarrassed for a few years but change our philosophy completely. Our impact game does not work. We don't have the kind of giant factory that SA have to service such a game. It can win on occasion, but it sucks much too much energy from players in a series of games. We even struggle getting two games back to back in the 6N.
So relief. Whatever happens now with a new coach and assistants must take into account a full reset - and some current mainstay players will have to be sacrificed. I'm prepared for Farrell to be as cold as he might think he needs to be provided we DO get a change of style. We actually thought Joe Schmidt was going to do it when he first came in but he quickly showed us he was going to double down on Ireland's 'traditional' patterns.

More threats of bans!
Pretty mild stuff from ebop, why are personal insults allowed yet a bit of bants not?
Anyway England are going have to be right on it, no room to carry players like Slade and Daly.

Geez I had...New Zealand 46 12 Ireland....
If only they’d kicked their conversion!
Hard luck Ireland, ABs once again chose the right occasion to be clinical. It’s the World Cup. That’s when you’re going to get them at the very best. These days they simply have to prioritise, and this is tops, everything points to these knockouts.
Ireland did well to rally second half but the ABs accuracy, speed, variation of play, kicks, chips across multiple playmakers...even Goodhue became one... hard to stop all that coming at you at a hundred mph.
Good send off for Rory! Huge Irish support there to see him off.
England next week and we won’t get anywhere near that margin. The ones to beat.

I've huge respect for Schmidt and what he's done but this year has just been a total disgrace. To lose a match is one thing but to not even be competitive is unacceptable and it's happened too many times this year.
I know other nations have improved and peaked for this tournament but I cannot fathom how far this team has fallen in less than 12 months. It's probably a good thing Joe is gone as if we carried this into the 6N he wouldn't be far off getting sacked. Can't say I'm too hopeful for the Farrell era either tbh.
Congrats to the ABs, you've silenced your doubters and the England semi final promises to be a cracker

Very ignorant words there theslosty. If you think it’s a disgrace that Schmidt engineered two, let me spell that out for you, T W O (or 2 if you’re a moron) wins against the All Blacks for the first time in history after 100 years of trying then you should probably recalibrate your definition of disgrace.

I'm not taking that any of that away from him. He brought us to a level that we'd never got to before and cemented himself as Ireland's greatest ever coach a while ago. But he cannot be above criticism and 2019 has just been catastrophic. There's no shame in losing to teams like England, Wales and NZ - even Japan the way they've been playing - but the performances and the scorelines have been shameful. To not even put up a fight is plainly unacceptable. There must have been something going on behind the scenes this year as to go from playing at around 9/10 to about 2/10 overnight is baffling. Are our players as good as the ABs - no - but there still were until very recently several world class individuals in that side. Around last year I could have named Furlong, Ryan, POM, Murray, Sexton and Stockdale all in a World XV, with others not far off - looks pretty foolish now.
I have to call it as it is because if it was any other coach I'd probably be calling for their head - as it is it's probably for the best Joe calls it a day now. If nothing else it would be nice to see a bit of exciting rugby again from Ireland. I'm just sick because it's a horrible way for him to go out - I'm sure a part of him wishes he could just have one more 6N to atone for this year but as I say it's probably best he moves on.

We will just have to wait for another time to win a quarter, we shall delay the celebrations for another day.
Irish people are well able to find humour in tough situations, like in this video.

Guns, you’ll probably always struggle with humility despite the dead Irish guy making a mockery of his own funeral.
