Re: ENGLAND vs ITALY - 13/02/21 - build up / match thread
Is it because England are playing Italy that they running more with ball in hand than they did against Scotland?

There's no law specifically against jumping into/over tackles.eirebilly wrote:No 7&1/2 wrote:eirebilly wrote:No 7&1/2 wrote:And before someone says it....there is no law which says you cant jump a tackle.
Pretty sure there is, in open field play but not one for diving to the line.
Some finish by May
Find it and I'll have some real humble pie to eat as it's been an annoyance to me for a long time when commentators mention it.
I will have a look but i was certain there was a law for jumping tackles in open play, a law against dangerous play? I would love to find it but a too lazy
Nothing wrong with that finish though, it was a thing of beauty.
9.11. Players must not do anything that is reckless or dangerous to others
Jumping into tackles has been interpreted as coming under that subsection of law 9 for as long as I've been reffing.
It's often asked at reffing courses why a law specifically outlawing jumping into/over tackles hasn't been made and I reckon that the grey area between diving for the line and jumping a tackle in situations such as that is precisely why. The tackle area around the try line is a bit of a mess as it is. Defenders stopping pick and go's near the line make no arms chop tackles more often than not and there are often no arms tackles made by fullbacks and wingers near the corners trying to put players into touch, etc.

Re: ENGLAND vs ITALY - 13/02/21 - build up / match thread
They've had field position and quick ball. Hogg's kicking stopped the first and the Scotland back row stopped the second. England were dire last weekend but Scotland also played a game plan I was not expecting from them and executed it to near perfection.majesticimperialman wrote:Is it because England are playing Italy that they running more with ball in hand than they did against Scotland?

He's not beed good for a long time. We need to find another full back and give Daly a break. He's better on the wing or centre IMO.

Farrell's communication with refs is so poor. From watching the behind the scenes stuff the RFU release he is clearly very respected by teammates. Similar with the Lions as well from those behind the scenes DVDs it must be said. He's really poor at working with a ref though. I'd so much prefer Curry or Itoje as skipper.

The experienced home nations fly-halves of Faz, Sexton, Biggar and Russell all love waving their hands at refs when things aren't going their way it must be said. I'm biased with Ford as a Tigers fan but I do love that he is constantly waving and shouting at teammates rather than officials.

England needed that from Watson. A complete change of momentum after 10 minutes of good Italy rugby. That will feel like a 14 point swing for the Italy players after running themselves ragged getting a foothold in the game.

I've been one of the most critical of Farrell's tackle technique and terrible tackle percentage but not much in that for me. As the officials saied it's chest on chest, his arms are up, it's not a shoulder charge, head to head collision isn't foul play.BigGee wrote:Bit lucky there Farrell I think

Lucky?
That is one of the most pointless checks I've ever seen, playing the player rather than the situation.

Genge getting pinged straight away. I always thought he was handy scrummager but he's not showed up well at all in the white.

Re: ENGLAND vs ITALY - 13/02/21 - build up / match thread
It's dumb because Farrell ends up committing to an unnecessary tackle and on the deck rather than in the defensive line. It's the sort of challenge that happens a lot of times throughout a game though in my opinion. I think the refs are correct that there's no clear foul play in it though. It is still silly from Faz though I agree.GeordieFalcon wrote:king_carlos wrote:I've been one of the most critical of Farrell's tackle technique and terrible tackle percentage but not much in that for me. I get in from work and England are only 27-11? How are our Saracens heroes doing?
Daly, Billy and Farrell not so well, Itoje looking good.
We had a good 20mins in the 1st half, poor after the restart.

From behind is irrelevant to the laws. He's committed as the pass gets thrown as well in my opinion. Similar to tackles you often see when forwards target a first receiver and commit as the pass is thrown then connect once it's gone. Not much in it for me.tigertattie wrote:Was a late hit from behind.
Gengey doesn't need to rub an Italy players head condescendingly after that turnover. Just unnecessary and if things kick off leading to the TMO looking at the incident he is the muppet that lit the fuse.

Head to head contact isn't a high tackle or foul play. The initial impact was chest height definitely not neck or head.TJ wrote:Farrell - he was ;late and high as he often is. In thinking about the HI they forgot to check it for being late.

Delighted that England are using the bench fairly early. No point in that 6-2 split if they don't use it to go for the jugular.
