Political round up.............
First topic message reminder :
The best thing about our system is that every single person in the country gets an equal vote under equal circumstances. Unless a National ID card scheme is introduced this will just alienate poorer voters. Just another way to rig the system.

Appropriate? Not really. Why is it OK to negatively stereotype golfers, but not other groups, in this sort of fashion? And we wonder why Brexit occurred or Trump got in...JuliusHMarx wrote:BamBam wrote:Maybe so, but that is a battle for another day.

Re: Political round up.............
When the Tory leadership contest happens, Tory MPs will whittle down the candidates to the final two (it took five ballots last time) and then the Tory members get a vote. Some entertaining polling by ConHome of said members reveals the nine most popular choices for leader (from first to ninth) are:
Wallace; Mordaunt; Truss (Liz, not our Truss); Zahawi; Badenoch; Sunak; Baker; Tugendhat; Hunt.
There are a lot of don't knows in that polling, however, and it is very early days.

Wallace definitely the most likely as things stand. His refusal to resign isn't surprising. He can, along with Truss The Drip, say that he's staying loyal to Ukraine, not Johnson.

A few more resignations but no one in any real positions. Rats deserting a sinking ship.
No surprise to see which sycophants are backing Johnson. You could name atleast 4 of them without even having to think.

Re: Political round up.............
Johnson digging further in, it seems, as he appoints a new chancellor (Zahawi) and two other ministers. No immediate resignation on the way, though 69% want him to resign (YouGov) including a majority of 2019 Tory voters.
The 1922 committee are having elections next week and it's possible that the leadership rules could change, meaning that Johnson faces another leadership challenge in the coming weeks. Speculation long around that Johnson previously got some MPs who support him to put letters in, thereby meaning the confidence vote was held before the two highly damaging by-election defeats. Clever move if true, but the 1922 committee may still have the final say.

Absolutely - it started with an error of judgement by Johnson to give Pincher a job in the Whip's office despite the previous allegations, but then it's the lies and ever-evolving story to try and protect Boris from an uncomfortable truth. Just the same as Partygate -the actual sin isn't THAT important (although the issue with the partying at No 10 did show an attitude of being above the rules), but its the failure to come clean in one go and try to spin things out until people give up caring.
I still don't know how Boris got anywhere near the top of the Government - on its own, the Zagari-Ratcliffe affair and his comment about her training journalists should have seen him out of the Cabinet never to return. Just showed incredibly bad judgement and a lack of attention to detail.

Re: Political round up.............
Starmer ripping into Johnson at PMQ's. Its notable that during Johnsons ramblings there is almost silence from the Tory benches, a stark contrast from a few weeks ago.
The 1922 committee are due to meet later this afternoon to vote on a rule change, so Johnson could possibly face a confidence vote as early as next week.
Tick tock.

Re: Political round up.............
We're up to 27 ministerial resignations now, and a handful of prominent backbench MPs (such as Liam Fox) have withdrawn their support from the leader.
We might reach a point where Johnson is simply unable to fill the vacant positions with willing MPs.
Current odds on next Tory leader: Sunak 4/1; Mordaunt 4/1; Wallace 13/2; Javid 13/2; Truss 7/1; Hunt 7/1; Tugendhat 9/1; Zahawi 9/1.

BBC are reporting that a group of cabinet ministers including the chief whip are going to tell him to resign. Suddenly makes sense why he decided to go the liason committee. Probably couldnt find a fridge in time.
Edit: its believed Nadhim Zahawi and Brandon Lewis are among the group.

That's hilarious, Zahawi (appointed only yesterday!) telling the PM to go. Why did he accept the role if he thinks Johnson should leave? A desire to have the quickest stint as Chancellor?
1922 committee have not changed the rules today. They will have an election on Monday to determine a new executive who may modify the rules, if this circus is still ongoing by then.

And the 1922 committee decide Monday for an election of all positions.
Funniest thing so far was Boris saying the truth is important to him. Erm since when.
And in other news, seeing as this is a day to bury bad news. BA announce they'r e cancelling 10,300 short haul flights till October.

It's a game of which Johnson supporter will be the last man (or woman) standing - Rees-Mogg and Dorries the favourites.

I do wish they would stop parroting this “he’s got a mandate from the British public” cowpat. No the Frak he doesnt, the Conservative party have a mandate. Johnson just happened to be leader when they got it. This isnt America where they vote on an outright leader, and its been this way for over 800 years. Christ on a bike.

Are you sure? I don't see anyone in the shower of sh!te that is likely to be any better, unless the Conservative party membership come to their senses and select someone outside of the cadre of Brexit ideologues and Johnson sycophants. And even then, isn't Jeremy Hunt top of the list? Uninspiring is the kindest thing I can say.

There are atleast a few who are semi-competent, and wont lurch from scandal to scandal. Johnson was wholly unfit to lead a village fete, let alone a government position. Surely has to go down in history as one of the worst PM's ever, certainly the worst in living memory, certainly of the last 100 years.

Re: Political round up.............
Badenoch and Baker are the only contenders who are vaguely Conservative. But Badenoch is unlikely to stand, and Baker will struggle to get through the MPs vote (he appeals very strongly to one wing of the party, but currently has minimal support amongst the rest).
The rest (Wallace, Mordaunt, Javid, Truss, Zahawi, Hunt, Tugendhat, Sunak and Jake Berry who's just put his hat in the ring) are the same Johnson continuation - a big-government, high-tax, lots of regulation mob who would be more at home in New Labour or the Lib Dems.
Wallace is the one currently most talked about, which means he'll probably lose as favourites usually do in Tory leadership contests (Johnson an exception).

His statement is expected at 12:30, however he is currently filling cabinet gaps so there is a growing concern that he wont actually resign.
Greg Clark is Levelling Up, Kit Malthouse is CDL, Cleverly gets education and Buckland gets Wales.
Keir Starmer says if he isnt removed completely today then Labour will table a no confidence vote in parliament.
