It looked like he started his run up with 3 seconds left on the clock. What happens if he doesn’t kick it within 60 seconds? Is it a penalty to the other team?

Not sure, but unlikely a penalty, more likely a scrum

Good question - don't know. Presumably a scrum or something?

Just checked and you’re right- a scrum is awarded to the previously penalised team

Re: Rugby World Cup - other team/games and general chat
Law 8.21 Penalty Kick: The kick must be taken within 60 seconds (playing time) from the time the team indicated their intention to do so, even if the ball rolls over and has to be placed again. Sanction: Kick is disallowed, and a scrum is awarded.

99% he didn't make contact with the ball until after time up - assuming the graphic on the TV screen was correct of course ...

No doubt about that, but you suspect Ireland will be smart enough to out play them. That try showed the way

Inside ball from Sexton looks a touch forward there to me. It feels like there's been a fair few borderline passes in try build ups that aren't even looked at in the opening two weekends.

That said it's yet another example of Ireland's impressive playbook of set-piece attacking moves under Farrell and Catt. It's become a hallmark of their game plan under the current setup and they're very good at executing them as a unit.

Yeah on first viewing I thought it went forwards, then I thought his hands probably went backwards, not sure either way - hoping the TMO is checking in the background at least.

I agree king Carlos. I’m sure I said that earlier on this thread. We’re copying rugby league with the “flat” passes

Ruthlessly clinical in punishing Kata's mistake there. Ireland are so well drilled at executing moves like that.

Ireland being very crafty with lineouts and getting away with very secure ball, with no chance of any challenge by Tonga. Should have saved that tactic for later games as SA and Scotland will have seen it at every lineout.

I noticed that as well- the lifters accidentally being in front of the jumper. I’m sure a try was disallowed for this already in this weekends games. It happens in a lot of cases and is rarely picked up

Another great try by Jonny. Now he’s got the record, I’d sub him at halftime and put him in a bubble wrap room ready for further in the tournament

So disappointed with Tonga with their new stars. They look all over the place, compounded with their usual shocking decispline.

Do you mean shielding the jumper/ball carrier when they land at the line-out or something else as that type of obstruction should be spotted easily by the officials?

Yes shielding the jumper when they land. You’d think it would be easy to spot, but it happens in every match and is rarely picked up

They are being very cute with it. They aren't completely sealing off the jumper they are just giving him a a buffer. It's right on the edge. A TMO has chalked off a try for this but it was the lifters clearly stepping in front of the lifter. No TMO is going to chalk off a try for what Ireland are doing as it's not clear and obvious enough. It's one of several reasons Ireland are so good, they blur the lines so well.

Emptied most the bench at halftime. Sexton and the whole front row off. With Sheehan and Healy injured that's basically down to 3rd choice at hooker and TH. Farrell not afraid to back his depth.Collapse2005 wrote:Think Ireland need to keep the pressure on for the second half

The Tongan discipline no worse than the Irish. The error count though, there's a gulf in that area. The problem for Tonga is always likely to be that they've got 15 players who play for between 10 and 15 different clubs. It's hard to build cohesion when the squad is so rarely together. Against a lot of teams they might get away with it but Ireland are an absolute class act with players that have played a lot together and the foundation coming from an incredible Leinster side.

It was a tough first game for Tonga
Ireland have been clinical and showed they are in a good place for this competition
Tonga will get the chance to show their wares against Scotland next weekend, which will be a pivotal game for both teams.

Constantly offside (Not always pinged) loads of late hits, fractured defensive line the whole game, not good enough.formerly known as Sam wrote:LeinsterFan4life wrote:So disappointed with Tonga with their new stars. They look all over the place, compounded with their usual shocking decispline.

They have a team full of top professionals, so they should be held to a lot higher standard than the likes of Portugal and Uruguay but those sides looked a lot better. Tonga also played the most warmups (pacific nations tournament plus two games against Canada) out of everybody in the lead up, compared to Portugal who had one game against Aus A for instance. Cohesion shouldn't be as big of an issue as it is.

Yeah I thought Tonga were offside a lot but Ireland dealt with that well by letting the heavies and Aki take a lot of the first phase ball. Will prob do something similar v SA.
