Glasgow and Edinburgh 30 - Starting the new season with 2 wins - Long may it continue
First topic message reminder :
Well both Scotland's pro teams got off the mark with a W this weekend, though probably fair to say that Glasgow's was slightly more pleasing on the eye!
Still not to be sniffed at and probably a while since it last happened.
A good omen for the season, let's hope so, though early season games are not always a predictor of longer term performance. Both sides still got plenty of players to bring back into the fold and a lot of improvement to make.
Roll on 2023/24!

Would recommend the Scottish rugby podcast this week to get the juices flowing
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p07nvrfp?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile
Fraser Brown gave a really interesting summary of the origins of the Glasgow-Munster rivalry and all the battles they've had since. Interestingly he thinks it all started when RoG and Kellock were doing a coin toss and the ref was giving them a pep talk along the linea of "you are both experienced players and captains of your club and country". RoG supposedly replied saying "I am but I don't have a clue who this guy is". Charming.
Brown also spoke about the game after Antony Foley died and said the best All Blacks team of the last 20 years wouldn't have beaten Munster that day, and he's probably right.
Going to be a hell of a battle!

I thought that match shouldn't have gone ahead, Munster were clearly hurting and Glasgow ended up being on the receiving end of their raw emotions. The red mist well and truly descended on Keith Earls that day. Feels like an age now.
Cheers for the heads up, Glasgow v Munster is always a niggly one. Excited to see how Glasgow get on. Apparently there's some football match on this weekend as well?

Good luck to the Scotland football team but feck me, I’m bored of it already. How does a game need an entire news program of coverage

Woeful. At least the whole news programs dedicated to “no Scotland. No party” will stop. It’s a real shame as the economy gets a really good boost the longer you stay in a competition
If the rugby team got half this exposure or half the funding the soccer gets, we’d be flying

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh 30 - Starting the new season with 2 wins - Long may it continue
I knew the game was a bogey fifteen seconds after kick off. Germany played like Exeter or the Boks against a team with no kicking game. They kicked deep into the Scotland half and sent FIVE players chasing the ball. You seldom see that kind of aggression in top flight football, it leaves you far too open to a counterattack. However, it was like the Boks; you can have the ball in your 22 and we'll blitz the 10-12 channel until we get a turnover or a penalty. The opposition has two options; kick better than the Boks or be brave and look to get the ball wide of the blitz and attack from deep. Last night Scotland continually tried to play out from the back through their wingbacks and the Germans kept enough players in their faces to stop them making any progress. Scotland then resorted to punting long balls upfield to no-one. The pressure was never relieved and the goals were inevitable.
As a Scotland rugby fan it was all a little bit deja vu.
Will Munster adopt a similar pressing game tonight? Is Jordan a good enough 10 to kick us out of trouble or to bring our outside backs into the game? Can our fat boys buy him enough time at the breakdown? Have I enough beer in the house?

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh 30 - Starting the new season with 2 wins - Long may it continue
So I have made it to North Ballachullish this after and am currently recuperating. The climbs of Glencoe and The Rest and Be Thankful await me tomorrow as I make my way down to Dunoon.
The weather today has been very kind and I have ridden down Loch Ness, seen the Commando Memorial and the Nevis Range l in sparkling sunshine - it has just been incredible and just the tonic to take your mind off Scottish sporting issues.
Unfortunately I am not going to be able to watch the match tonight. No Premier TV in this B&B and I also need to concentrate on refueling myself.
So if anyone is watching tonight and fancies sticking a few updates on the thread, so I can stay in the loop that way, it would be much appreciated
Thanks
BG

Looks nice and dry as well so should help some running rugby......teams run out of the pitch now

Munster kick off. Glasgow retain it and looking for a contestable kick. They knock on though so its a Munster scrum on the 40 in their own half...

Oppphh Munster demolish Glasgow on the first scrum - totally disintegrated - penalty adv - they run some ball but after a few phases ref goes back for the penalty. Glasgow conceded a 2nd penalty as well so they have 2 places to take it from.

Glasgow kick off to Munster but turn the ball over on the 40m and Cancelleri kicks to the munster 22.
Glasgow turn the lineout over as well so attacking deep into the munster 22

Both teams look up for this.
Silly penalty by glasgow again now doubles munsters exit so now they have managed to get back to half way. Munster know they are in a game though....

Munster not straight at the lineout gives Glasgow some ball in the Munster 40. Munster turn them over after a couple of phases......
Munster kick it away and Glasgow carry back almost up to half way.........
Kicked away though will give munster a lineout in the munster 40m

Beautiful run from Munster almost see them brake through. Glasgow managed to get into the passing lane. Munster get it back again though and after some kicks towards glasgows 22, glasgow fumble the ball forward trying to play in their own 22.....

Munster will have a scrum now middle of the park in the glasgow 22 - dangerous position to defend this one.....Glasgow still have a few minutes down to 14.......

ah was actually a glasgow scrum but munster actually turn them over. They are going through phases in the glassgow 22.....but still about 10-15m away....

Re: Glasgow and Edinburgh 30 - Starting the new season with 2 wins - Long may it continue
Glasgow turn them over though with some excellent defence. They totally stopped any gain line and Munster couldnt get anywhere near the tryline with the forwards......great defence.....
Clearance only goes 30 m though so still deep in their own half.......they kick it way with a good chase but Zebo catches it and runs it back to the 40. But munster kick it away and glasgow now kick it deep into the munster half........munster run it to the half way........

7-3 Glasgow lead......Munster tried to play a bit in midfield and pass went to Steyn who ran from half way to finish it off.......
On kick off munster regain the ball and are now attacking again in the glasgow 40m.

But again Glasgow penalty as munster pinged for holding on.......Should let Glasgow get some relief and get it into the munster half........not a great kick barely over the half way line..........but will give them some possession.

They dont clear and run it out instead - going from very deep and run 20m upfield - now they clear the lines.....munster run it back to the half way......they still have possession.

but a knock on again gives the ball back to glasgow with a scrum - on the halfway. after some phases ball goes back to munster and they run but dont get further than the halfway line before kicking the ball away to Glasgow.

Munster run it back straight away and zebo gets knocked over the touchline as he sniffs the line inside the 22......glasgow lineout but munster concede penalty which now gives glasgow a easy exit.

Glasgow run the ball of the lineout to halfway but a clear out on O'mahoney has led to another penalty.
Munster probably will try to push this into the 22........
They didnt get it there though and glasgow turn it over at lineout and run out again - followed by a kick into the munster half......munster run it back to half way again.......

Munster get a penalty which they push into the 22 but its only the 22 so they have a bit of a way to go to the line.....they run but are turned over again and glasgow run again and this time break through - a kick then that leads to a big chase.....
A big bust up as well as O'mahoney gets involved causing another mellee .....

Commentators are also saying this is a proper knock out game.........
Opph Glasgow get a yellow card.....O'mahoney milked that a bit - would have thought a penalty would have been fine.....but Glasgow down to 14 again for 10mins

Half time no further score. Matt F yellow card for high tackle on POM. POM being an absolute wind up. Not convinced by Hornito so far. Need to see out 9 minutes with 14 men.

Glasgows defence that first half was very good.....Munster went into the Glasgow 22 a fair few times but only came away with 3 points.......
I get the sense Glasgow will get some possession in this game at some point and they do look dangerous with ball in hand.....Cancelliere looks like he's having an elusive running game in him tonight. Had some nice touches in that half.....

Munster literally vertically pickup the Glasgow player in one of the phases .......not seen something quite like that before.....ref gives a penalty to glasgow who kick it deep into the munster 22....about 10m out.......they take the lineout and maul towards the line.
