The over rated film thread
Following on from Hero's thread of ET vs Napoleon Dynamite, I thought it might be fun to see what everyone think are the films that suck balls but get universal love still.
So tell us your top 3 films and why you dislike them so much.
1. napoleon Dynamite - 'one of the funniest films ever'. i must have a very weak bladder and went to the toilet during all the funny bits. For me, I dont think the film raised one smile. Awful.
2. Anchorman - another very average film that everyone seems to love. just don't get why everyone rates it so highly. Unlike NP there were some good moments (the rival news readers gang fight for example) but still hugely over rated.
3. The Big Lebowski - another alright film that gets universal love. Dont get me wrong its not bad but its not brilliant either.
So thats my list, lets hear your and why.

Re: The over rated film thread
It all depends on the persons type of humour. I personally love both NP and Anchorman. Will Ferrell is my favourite comedy actors, step brothers is another quality films.
Over rated films for me would be anything with Adam Sandler. His only ok film is Waterboy. The guy just isn't funny IMO.
Another over rated film is Green Street. Would do people go so nuts over that film? Absolutely dreadful

Re: The over rated film thread
Well in retort to Hobo my top three would be...
1. ET, saccharin laced tosh. I first saw ET as a kid, a kid who'd just discovered the magic of Star Wars, where aliens came in all shapes and sizes, they had guns, they tried to eat you, generally they weren't the nicest things going. And in this alien excitement I went to see ET. Instead I was subjected to this whiney emo alien that only want to 'phone home'. His powers include the ability to make plants die and make bmxs float, well whoopdy doo. Not only that it brought Drew Barrymore into films which now results in countless pants romcoms with the likes of Adam Sandler. Only redeeming feature? Never made a sequel (but it did make the Phantom Menace even worse when Lucas added some of the little critters in the background of the film).
2. Lords of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring, what a snoozefest. Hey Frodo, lets wander over some hills, avoid some monsters , get rescued, meet some weirdos with funny names, wander over some hills, avoid some monsters, get rescued, meet some weirdos with funny names, wander over some hills, get rescued, notice a pattern? Just does the same thing for 4 hours!
3. Lost In Translation, I watched that and at the end I realised that I would never have that 104 minutes again. Nothing happens in it at all.

Re: The over rated film thread
1) Avatar. The most hyped up film perhaps of all time and it was a total snooze fest.
2) 2012. Absolutely shocking film, admittedly fantastic visuals but so, so bad. Dragged on forever.
3) Knowing. The worst film I have ever watched, ever.

I seem to recall I enjoyed Fargo when I watched it, Potter wise they’re a pale comparison on the books.
Re: The over rated film thread
for Fargo sorry if somebody didn't take me to the movies to see it, I would have walked out on it
I have only walked out on one movie but I was young and under age to go and see it, it was the texas chainsaw massacre the first one

A film I recently saw starring Melissa George of Home & Away fame, called 'Triangle' is so unbelievably awful that all those involved need put on trial for crimes against cinematography.

Re: The over rated film thread
I quite enjoyed the Big Lebowski actually, thought it was very funny.
I think the worst film I've ever watched from start to finish would have to be Daredevil, just terrible!
Other films which let me down were:
Star Wars - episode 2. OK Episode 1 wasn't great, but you kind of hoped it would pick up a bit, instead it got worse (though Episode 3 was better)
Matrix Revolutions. Loved the first film, second had some good bits, and then this load of rubbish. I mean the plost can be accurately summarised in about two sentences. Sure the fight scenes were still good, but not enough to cover that.
The latest Robin Hood (with Russell Crowe). Forgetting the daft idea of changing the whole plot (I mean, in that case perhaps just make a movie which isn't Robin Hood?), where was the action? I mean, if I wanted to see a film about some guy falling in love with some girl who eventually falls in love with him too they're probably better films out there for me...
In a completely different genre, Black Sheep looked promising on the cover (starts with a nice idea about mutant sheep in New Zealand) but turned out to be pretty poor.

No duplicate. I can prove it with the following statement:
I really enjoyed the Daredevil movie. I even bought the directors cut when it was released about a year after the original.

"The Big Lebowski" is one of my favourite films, as well as "The Departed"!
But I found, for example, "Julie & Julia" quite boring, though it got positive reviews (if that's what you mean by "overrated").

Most Overated Film would have to be Shutter Island, my god is that film dreadful, in the ad's it looks like a supernatural film but in reality its just Poopie
Worse film ever: The live action Street Fighter film with Van Damme and Kyle in it, it should be erased from everyones memory and destroyed

Shawshank Redemption - Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent film, but my God it seems to be the default favourite film for 72.89%* of the population.

Re: The over rated film thread
Tbh the op has picked 3 cult classics. They were films never meant to be to everybody's fancy, but those who they do appeal to highly rate them and I think rightly so, think all 3 are movies I can watch over and over
As for my overrated movies
Definately avatar
Spiderman seems to have a decent following but I think the films are awful
Star wars 1, 2 and 4 (the latter has its moments but isn't a patch on the last 2)
Anything in the slasher horror genre
Saw

I enjoyed Saw but thought the sequals were total junk.
Also had to sit through Evita at the cinema which was terrible and my wife made me watch titanic once which was also a terrible film.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Is it me, or was that just a clone of Tim Burton's "Big Fish"? Same plot structure. I thought it was rubbish.
"The Happening" was awful too.
