First topic message reminder :

Following on from Hero's thread of ET vs Napoleon Dynamite, I thought it might be fun to see what everyone think are the films that suck balls but get universal love still.

So tell us your top 3 films and why you dislike them so much.

1. napoleon Dynamite - 'one of the funniest films ever'. i must have a very weak bladder and went to the toilet during all the funny bits. For me, I dont think the film raised one smile. Awful.

2. Anchorman - another very average film that everyone seems to love. just don't get why everyone rates it so highly. Unlike NP there were some good moments (the rival news readers gang fight for example) but still hugely over rated.

3. The Big Lebowski - another alright film that gets universal love. Dont get me wrong its not bad but its not brilliant either.

So thats my list, lets hear your and why.

Prizzi's Honour. Raved about by the critics, but I could never find anyone who liked it.
There - I'm glad I finally got that off my chest after nearly 30 years - it's been keeping me up nights.

Taken - One of the most over rated films ever. I don't honestly see the magnetism that attracts everyone to an 'OAP' flying to Paris and playing out an average at best plot. Holly Valance is in this, surely that sums it up.

Anchorman definitely, Ferrell can be so irritating. Plus he's a sh/t actor.

Avatar. Who wants to see another re-telling of Pocahontas?

This one won't go down well. The Hangover. Not sure why people think it's that funny, humour these days in films is all wrong. Hangover 2 they got it right in my opinion.

Surely having Holly Valance in is something of a saving grace...

Transormers (all 3 of them). Predictable and boring storylines which do not vary at all throughout the trilogy. Terrible/cheesey humour and even worse acting, I just can't take it seriously. Fans talking about these awful movies is enough to get under my skin.

No Country for Old Men and Fargo are mine - I honestly don't get how a film can be universally loved when it has almost no dialogue and what dialogue there is is stunted, awkard and irratating.

I have a friend who loves the Big Lebowski and thinks it's the most amazing film ever and is always quoting from it, in much the same way I'd quote from Airplane, Twin Town (a Welsh film) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. But although I don't have anything against the film, I never thought it was particularly memorable, it was funny in bits but wasn't great, so I can't understand the cult status or love it gets.

It's mushroom on a hotdog sprinkled with some morrocan hash Mystiroakey!

Airplane is the greatest spoof ever made (and I love my spoofs, seeing everything from Hots Shots and Fatal Attraction to Tropic Thunder and Scary Movie) with so much clever dialogue and puns.

Just my opinion but I can not understand the love for No Country - to me there's barely any dialogue, large parts where nothing happens, very one dimensional characters and a pretty lame ending.

Personally think that 'Warrior', with Tom Hardy (who I thought was very good) was overrated.

I feel it had too much going on, and the story didn't give off the best message, unless it was trying to show what life is like now. Greed, materialistic and how we have more than we actually need. Joel Edgerton character had such selfish reasonings to win the tournament, just to save his house, which he didn't need. He could have lost and still have been a winner because he had a loving family.

I guess in a way it they were trying to film it in a way of a true under dog story but because of the other aspect, I didn't think it worked.

Sorry for the mini essay.

VTR what do you want with your films. Human traffic is quite a realistic potrayal of a time that existed. I personally love films like that.

Lost in translation- love it- Atmospheric, you could almost be there!

Million dollar baby is a great concept. Sad as anything though. Got to me big time. Not a film about boxing at all, boxing is just a plot device.

All 3 films are very different yet very good IMO. But its all subjective.

Well mystir Films are a divisive subject aren't they Smile

I was a bit harsh in my reviews there. I actually enjoyed all 3 films to a degree when I watched them but they are overrated.

What do you make of this selection?

La Quatre Volte - boring farming tutorial. Unwatchable!

The Artist - a timely reminder of why silent movies died out. No thanks!

Invictus - the 95 Rugby World Cup + Stilton = unwatchable nonsense

Do you mean Stilton as in the cheese? I can remember very little cheese in Invictus. Why was it unwatchable nonsense?

Well I'm not going to write full blown reviews - others do it better.

La Quatre Volta (or however it is spelt) stars an old man and some goats. It really is terrible yet the critics loved it even though nothing happens in it.

Invictus I found to be really cheesy. I'm sure others enjoyed it but I couldn't stand it personally.

What? The guy has a young family, had just lost his job as a teacher, was going to have his house taken and he had selfish reasons to win? He was fighting in that tournament to keep a roof over his families head, hardly selfish.

Maybe a line or two might help me/us understand your reasoning though, I agree that a full review would be over the top though.

I liked Invictus and felt there was very strong performances from Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, even if it was clear the director and actors had no idea of what rugby was or how it was played. It also had a feel-good inspiring message. Though of course it brushed over quite a lot and was a very romanacised version of events similar to Braveheart or other such films. (note I though Braveheart was much better, but then I thought The Patriot was much worse). It's all opinion however and I'm not attacking you for disliking the film

Fair enough Smirnoff, they were pretty tongue in cheek to be honest and I didn't have much time when I wrote them.

Your reviews in the same style were really good, all 3 of them cracked me up thumbsup

I've settled on La Quattro Voltre as my ultimate overrated film of all time. The critics lapped it up, talk about "Emperor's Clothes" as I can't believe anyone really liked it. There is no dialogue, and most of the film involves goats walking past a fixed camera. For some reason at one point Roman Centurions march past said fixed camera. Its original but unbelievably boring and plotless.

I think you've nailed it for me with Invictus. The live action parts of the film were very unconvincing which put me off.

Invictus could have been a good film - Morgan Freeman had the right gravitas as Mandela and the story (even if we all know it anyway) has enough drama and 'feel good' to make a decent piece of cinema.

The problem is that, like most sports films that use actors to portray sportsmen, the action parts of the film are just woeful. Any serious film about golf tends to be even worse, and as for 'Wimbledon'...

At least Escape To Victory had a few half decent footballers in it (even if Bobby Moore was more interested in trying to be Michael Caine), so much of the playing sequence looks reasonable (other than Sly in goal...)

Decent film, but nowhere near as good as is often made out.
And Russel Crowe's performance in it is the same, decent, but not great.

Baz Luhrman's 'Romeo & Juliet', which loses so much in a modern setting and shows a serious misunderstanding of the relationship between Romeo and Juliet; the age difference (she's thirteen in the original script) is relative to its historical context and crucial to the script. The modern setting is just unncessary, despite the stylistic aspects.

Also, 'Moulin Rouge' by the same director. Such a dull story with two leads who really don't inspire me to care about them. And they murder 'The Show Must Go On'. You really shouldn't give a Queen song to the weakest singer in the cast...

Grumble grumble...

Shawshank Redemption is probably the most overrated film ever. It's not that it's that bad (it's ok) but some folk seem to think it's the best thing ever done (it's not).

Lots of 'gangster' movies like the Godfather series are not all they're cracked up to be either.

Well it tops IMDB, and i suppose what ever film tops that list would be seen as being overrated by many. Because there is no truely best film is there- Its completly subjective.

However in terms of acting, storyline, atmposhere, emotions- shawshank is one of the good ones thats for sure..

Shaw Shank is an awesome film. Real good story line with some excellent scenes.

Found the Godfather films a bit of a drag, although i'm in the minority here.

I also quite liked Avatar. I have a strange taste in films.

I love the Godfather and Shawshanks (and the books) for their acting, story line & atmosphere and some 'tour-de-force' performances - but as Mystiroakey says any film that's talked up hugely is always going to annoy people.

My personnal ones are Star Wars, Jaws, Blair Withc Project (which IMO is abject), No Country for Old Men and Dumb and Dumber - which is going to be contentious in some circles.

Who said Pulp Fiction was overrated? Come on, speak up! I dare you. I double-dare you m*****f*****!

I love QT because of his ridiculously long dialogue bits. Possibly the least boring film ever.

On the other hand, the Bourne films seem a little sterile to me, so I'll put them in here. Most films that win an Oscar disappoint me. Not because they are slow paced, I expect that, but because the acting hasn't been any better as far as I can see from more mainstream hits, the film is often fake and pretentious and the atmosphere and character build up doesn't do enough to make up for the slowness and in films that are character driven, as most Oscar winners inevitably seem to be, this is an utterly unforgivable sin worthy of execution. The Reader is a good example of an award winner I think is bloody awful.

The Usual Suspects is good but gets extra plaudits for the ending, which is not overrated.

Bridesmaids is another. Not that funny and the characters were to obvious. The big loud fat bird............who's have thought.

I agree with the Bourne films - I found them quite predictable (at least the action scenes) and a little ridiculous, which has put me off reading the books (though they could be VERY good, I don't know).

My main annoyingly over rated films (though apologies I think I've said this before) is No Country For Old Men, and every Coen Bros film I've seen except maybe O Brother Where Art Thou (I don't mind Big Lebowski, but have had years of my mate treating it like the holy grail and being disbelieving and angry that I'm so blaise about the film)

I dont neccesarily think the bournes are overrated- just are what they are- good action/thriller/spy movies.

However I think they eveolved the genre abit. The bond after was possibly influenced by the original bourne..

Yup agree that the later bonds were influenced by the Bourne films - though I do find the later bonds quite poor, with poor storylines

I loved Casino Royale. haven't seen the original, so will not compare.

Agree with mystic about the Bourne films. They are what they are.
