Flyhalfs ?
Welsh World Cup Squad - Flyhalfs
First topic message reminder :
Steven Jones has been the incumbent flyhalf since Neil Jenkins retired back in 2001. Almost un-opposed and un-userped.
A few players have added pressure to him, even taken the chalice for a few games, which often encouraged the very best out of ol'Wellies.
The other contenders and I guess current favourite from the six nations are headed by james hook but the squad includes a number of lads who could make the position their own if given a run.
I guess that we would take two flyhalfs, Henson, Hook and Priestland can all play multiple positions so take that in to consideration.
Will be interesting for people who wish to to state their first and second choice ten?
Steven Jones (Scarlets) 100 Caps (899 Points) Lions 6 Caps (53 Points)
Jason Tovey (Dragons) 0 Caps
Rhys Priestland (Scarlets) 2 Caps
James Hook (Perpignan) 52 Caps (277 Points)
Gavin Henson (Unattached) 31 Caps (130 Points) Lions 1 Cap
Nicky Robinson (Wasps) 12 Caps (99 Points)

Re: Welsh World Cup Squad - Flyhalfs
hook has shown clearly in this rwc exactly what he is capable of NOW.
he was handed the chance (TWICE !) in the rwc and was an absolute disaster. nonsense to say 'ah , but he hasnt played there much' he has played more at 10 throughout his career than any other position.
In one breath, his supporters on this forum keep on about what he has done in various games over the years as 10, then when he messes up 'he hasnt played there much' according to you guys he's a 10, but only when he does ok; otherwise ' he hasnt played there much'
rpriestland has played mainly full back.

priestland is the best by a mile, i doubt SJ will play in 6n or i almost hope he doesnt so it can allow someone else to come in (whoever playing best out of regions) to push priestland as we dont want players getting complacent

Re: Welsh World Cup Squad - Flyhalfs
I know it's funny all the Hook fans saying that "what do you expect, he's barely played at 10" when he plays bad. but if that was the case then why were they shouting for him to play, saying such things as "if you want to win, then you have to play Hook". If he's rusty and hasn't had match practice, then he shouldn't be anywhere near the team, but if he's match fit and has the talent to slot straight in then we should be able to expect some consistency and the rusty excuse should go out of the window.
In regards to the 6N, it will be interesting to see how Byrne, Hook, Henson do in their new surroundings, but on current form I'd like to see Tovey being taken as an option at FB and 10 cover, to allow him to get use to int standard.

Re: Welsh World Cup Squad - Flyhalfs
quite so smpriest, my neighbour is a huge hook fan and before the world cup he said we would only win if hook was playing at 10 'to get the backs going and to create something' I said he doesnt get the line going and creates for himself, anyway .......
guess what , post rwc my neighbour says 'I felt sorry for hook, being asked to play 10 against france, he hasnt played there enough and gatland should never have humiliated him by putting him on again against the aussies. those coaches havent got a clue'
oh, says I , where did you want him to play then ?
'10, he's world class, world class.'
I was on my way out with the dog, and thank god he was pulling the lead, clever dog!!!

Re: Welsh World Cup Squad - Flyhalfs
Lol so true, I work with 2 guys who were saying the same about Hook before the WC and saying SJ should never be allowed to play 10 for Wales, and now it's just "what do you expect he's rusty". And now 1 of them thinks that Henson will be the Blues saviour straight away at 10, as if someone whose been out of the game for 2 years and hasn't played at a pivotal role like 10 for 6? years can just slot straight in at a new team and be one of the best in the league.
It's crazy as the guy is quite a knowledgable rugby fan and Blues season ticket holder - but just seems any player the press big up is automatically the most amazing player for that position, no matter the opposition, the style of play or the players form.
