West Ham Thread
First topic message reminder :
Didn't play badly but just cannot put it in the net. We may have signed Carew this week but we need a goalscorer like a Chopra, Miller or Phillips. Until then we will continue to get rolled over.
We didn't deserve to lose that one, but good luck to Cardiff, great set of fans and a passionate club. We will just have to get those three points back later!

Very solid performance from the Hammers. Wobbled a bit mid second half when Cardiff hit the post, but could easily already have been 2 - 0 up by then. Looked like a good time to play Cardiff who seemed jaded after their cup final...

Could we play all our games away from home?
It's getting tighter at the top and we need to click in to gear to make ourselves favourites now.

Very jittery performance last night. The momentum seems to be with Reading at the moment. Could easily leapfrog Hammers - and Southampton - unless we stop dropping these poor home results.

I don't blame it all on Big Sam, I blame the lack of goals and the pressure that the players seem to be feeling at Upton Park. It's no excuse, but clearly they struggle to deal with fans expectations, and the generally tetchy atmosphere if things start to go a little wrong.

Yet another draw tonight. Only bright spot was Reading losing to Peterborough. Southampton opening up a big gap. Hammers home game against Reading looks ever more critical.

I despair sometimes Corporal. I could see their goal coming a mile off and we weren't dangerous enough.
It's absolutely criminal we're in the position we are now after looking so comfortable and being pretty much certs to burst clear. Now we're looking over our shoulders and I can't see us going up if we carry on as we are.

Re: West Ham Thread
One of the guys at the Middlesbrough forum I hang out on posted some comments from a West Ham forum and it was hilarious how many comments mirrored the ones we see regularly on our forum...
"Can't break down sides that are set up to defend..."
"Too negative at home..."
"Not good enough to get promoted..."
That said I was surprised at how wayward and lacking in quality the Hammers looked last night. We were better than we have been for a couple of games, but I don't think it was entirely down to us.
Think a draw was a fair result. Faye's goal was a fluke and ours was a bit of individual brilliance. In between was a lot of very ordinary / mediocre play.
Still think West Ham have an outside chance of automatic promotion, but if not you have to be favourites to win the play-offs (can't see you being that poor for the rest of the season).

Battered us my arsenal! You were obviously watching a different game. Boro enjoyed a fair amount of possession and at no time (until the first goal) was I overly worried.
Our keeper had to make maybe 3 good saves all game until the final 15 minutes, when things got a bit frantic for both sides. I lost count of the number of wayward shots / crosses from the Hammers. Neither side looked like scoring and it took a bit of luck for them to take the lead (and a moment of magic for us to equalise).
According to the BBC's official match report the Hammers' goal was an OG by Bennett. Stats as follows:
Possession
West Ham 54 - 46 Boro
Shots (on target)
West Ham 17(9) - 18(10) Boro
Corners
West Ham 7 - 6 Boro
Fouls
West Ham 7 - 10 Boro
Hardly seems like a "battering", does it?

Cheer up Corporal. You're only 4 points behind Reading with a game in hand. Win that and you've still got a decent chance of 2nd place. Would agree your chances of winning the Championship are looking very slim now.

Finally Hammers end the sequence of draws with a win. Next up the crucial game against Reading. Can't say I'm particularly optimistic about that one. Can see us dithering over how many players to commit in attack... But at least tonight's result will have restored a bit of confidence....

Biiig game tomorrow now. I can see it being tense and can go either way. Which means it's probably a 1-1 or 0-0 in waiting.
We look awful at home - and that isn't me being overly critical (or delusional as Sam might say), we just don't have the confidence to take it to teams and we look fragile mentally.
I don't care how we play to win - so long as we win. If we play crap football and don't win on top, then I don't think fans can be blamed for getting a bit snipey.

Went to the game yesterday, we played well for the first 35 mins then it all went wrong. Losing Noble at half time was a massive loss, by far our best player. 2-1 down and he puts a defender on? Bloody hell Sam

Re: West Ham Thread
West Ham fans - I'll try and take your minds off yesterday's result for a minute.
Longstanding supporters with a liking of trivia might just recall striker Lee Boylan. He probably has the shortest appearance record of any Hammers' first team player as well as anyone to have appeared in the Premier League.
His one appearance for the Hammers was as an 89th minute substitute in 1997 as you trounced Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 in the Premier League. High hopes were held for him for a while but things didn't work out and he ended up going on loan before before being released.
Fifteen years on, he's done well with a host of mainly non league clubs including Canvey Island for whom he scored almost 180 goals in just over 200 games. I saw him still at it yesterday, playing now for Thurrock and against Woking in the Conference South. A real livewire who retains an eye for goal. He never gave up and scored Thurrock's consolation as they went down 5-1 and stare relegation in the face.
He deserved better support from his team mates yesterday. I wonder if he holds similar thoughts about his time at West Ham and what might have been.

Southampton draw 2-2 with Pompey, so it could make things a bit interesting at the top. But only if West Ham win all their matches, which is an unlikely proposition....

Re: West Ham Thread
The issue with play offs obviously being that all it takes is one poor game and it's all over. The longer West Ham stay in the Premier League, the more likely they won't be able to get back up.
Where as I think if they go up this year, they the foundations to stay up.

Not optimistic about the play offs. Teams that narrowly miss out on automatic promotion often seem to stumble in play offs, probably for psychological reasons...

Hmm...I see what you mean. That said we're still clutching at straws that Cardiff will lose at Palace while we beat Watford away, to snatch 6th place.

Re: West Ham Thread
The easy bit - another away victory tonight, against Leics. That makes 13 away victories (and only 4 away defeats) in the season.
In fact we could still get automatic promotion if we crush Hull and Southampton draw, but I can't see that happening.
Bit frustrating to have got so close to automatic promotion, but we dropped far too many home draws so we can't really complain about bad luck.
By no means impossible for Boro to get into the play offs if Cardiff get the jitters...
