The scotland answer was partly a joke, although I know the won them all back in the early days. I am actually surprised to find out that England don't have more.

Re: Golf Quiz[z]
Sorry, actually my mistake... Forgot to count Phil's last runner up at the Open, with that he just makes it T10. Well done to those who named him. Sarazen makes it as well, kwini!
Here is the revised list anyway:
1 Jack Nicklaus 18 19 37 (1st 2nd Total)
2 Tiger Woods 14 6 20
3 Tom Watson 8 8 16
4 Gary Player 9 6 15
5 Ben Hogan 9 5 14
5 Sam Snead 7 7 14
5 Walter Hagen 11 3 14
5 Arnold Palmer 7 7 14
9 Harry Vardon 7 4 11
9 Byron Nelson 5 6 11
9 Gene Sarazen 7 4 11
9 Phil Mickelson 4 7 11
I didn't include Bobby Jones here as I'm not quite sure how to count his 1st and 2nd places in what were considered majors at the time...

Not wishing to start an argument, but really feel as if that stat is a measure of Greg Norman's achievement. There but for the grace of Greg quite a few times.

I did wonder about some of the older ones (pre Bobby Jones and the Masters) and how many runner ups they had e.g. Braid, Taylor, old Tom, young Tom, Wille Park etc

Ah ha!
When all guesses have been exhausted, I've found a link to the answer!!
Quote:
"Progress was slow. The arrangement lasted for four years, but the continued lack of success brought it to a premature end."
I've only heard of Tommy Horton (chatted with him a few times, seems a very nice bloke) and Barnes, so bon chance with the final four!

BTW, not that it matters, but in that link I found they're called Button with an 'o', but in your post Doon you call them Butten and saw some other links where they appear as Butten... Not sure what's the correct spelling...

Doon,
Try this link:
http://www.spgc.co.uk/visitors/history/button_boys
Seems there were two groups: Tommy Horton and 3 others, followed later by Barnes and three more. Eight in all.

Mike Ingham was the one I could not remember.
Found the link now NO1 On Google~ how did that happen??????
Kwinni just got your post.
Clark and Barnes used to hit the ball miles.
I played behind Barnes once in a competition. You will not be surprised to hear he was still a plonker in those days
Jings you guys are quick Tony Martin is in!!

Re: Golf Quiz[z]
Thought Mike Ingham was a rather good football man for the BBC.
Was Barnes drinking a pint a hole back in those days?
He did a little Senior Tour commentary, probably for ESPN, when arthritis started to get the better of him, sounded a touch arrogant on the air.

If that's the way he wanted to come across he certainly succeeded. Some people might say that sixties Millfield would do that to you.

It may not have reached you but the Welsh and English Government are proposing a saturated fat food tax, thought you might want to be aware of that in any dealings with SR.
Scotland, naturally, will not support the proposed new tax.

Doon,
Haven't Denmark introduced the same thing?
I live in a very localvore State and City and Michael Pollian is virtually our Patron Saint, so am very aware of foods, where they come from, and whether they might be good for you.
I do my share by concentrating on local beer, and sometimes wine!
VT trying to introduce a "soda" tax - much resistance of course.

Yes Kwinni they are following Denmarks example.
There was a heated debate on Radio Scotland and in the middle of it this woman said 'there is no such thing as bad food only bad diets, overeating and lack of excercise.' Very wise words I thought.

Re: Golf Quiz[z]
Doon,
It's very difficult though, isn't it? Advertising is so insidious, and famers here are subsidised to produce corn products, oil-based products, that are marketed to death and have little or no nutritional value. It's an absolute racket and the very wise words are wasted on people, especially children and the poorest families, who just want to fill themselves up and get addicted on sugar, salt, and are five easy steps to inactivity and obesity.
But we have our first winter veggies so we're all set. Too bad half the population wouldn't recognise a turnip or a brussel sprout if they saw it, let alone eat it. Tragic really.
And don't let's start on Coke and Pepsi . . . . . .
