The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of pub regulars. We've got the big group pic from the HEC final in Cardiff, plus insets of ll those who couldn't make it
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

aaaaah I get you Simon. Erm, I'm not sure. obviously there would be lots of the vowels: a, e, i, o, u, w, y
And H which can be a vowel as well.

What you don't want to do is give Munster a soft early try

Sorry Dreamer I don't buy that Ireland were good for the first half. Too many handling errors, soft at the breakdown and tackling was dodgy. We gave away terrible tries and it cost us. Our attack lacked invention as it has for some time and when Wales stifled the backrow we had nothing. Wales were full value for their victory but Ireland were never in it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First half: apart from the first 5 mins, you really played good rugby in the first half, definitely. true you could have been more creative in the backs but you had the drive and the posession and we were really under perssure.
You then took your chance early in the 2nd half. I would have said you were in it until the last 20 mins, and I think fitness was the biggest difference in this match.
yes you could have played better, but I think Wales were superb in stopping your strengths, doesn't mean you weren't good though.
(and damn it T, I wasn't going to talk about this match again tonight!)
I'm heading back to watching Strictly....

No Thomond, you do yourself an injustice. Had any of the three gambles to go to the line come off (one was very close) that would have been a very different game.

Good rugby,we never looked like scoring a try. We should have taken the points on offer. The fact we didn't try to adapt our gameplan when it wasn't working is worrying. Wales were magnificent, completely shut down our attacking weapons but that doesn't mean that Ireland were awful. No physicality at the breakdown or any of the ferocity we saw in the last 2 Big games.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
of course you looked like scoring a try, the only thing that stopped SOB was Shane doing brilliantly to get underneath him to hold it up.
At times I was very worried at the breakdown! go read the match thread if you need proof we got turned over at least 11 times in the match and too often left the ball unprotected at the breakdown which Ireland capitalised on.
Physicality wasn't missing, but aye perhaps the ferocity a bit.

Thomomd I have to say we were poor but not as bad as you are suggesting. As Glas says there were very good opportunities in the first half. Credit Wales's defence for forcing us to make errors.

Yeah, but was that you being bad, or is being good? A bit of both perhaps. I'm afraid BOD's legacy as captain will be weighed up in the light of his not playing knock out rugby in the biggest knock out game of his life, or is that harsh?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The main reason I say we were poor is our defending three soft tries and gave up far too much ground. Wales were as good as I've ever seen them play and forced Ireland to play like this at times.

Aye thats harsh Glas. BOD's legacy will be his brilliance as a centre and as Captain during one of Ireland's most successful periods that culminated in the 09 GS.

BOD will go down as an all time great of the world game and rightly so. People will forget soon enough that he changed the course of the match by turning down the first early on.

I don't doubt that Rava. At times in the GS he was your team. Something needed doing and he did it. You are right, it won't taint his legacy but not using ROG to keep the board ticking over was a big mistake, no?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Evening all,
I think the decision to go for the corners early on can only be seen as a mistake in retrospect. Apparently it was incredibly windy at pitch level so the kicks were not as easy as it might seem.
Does anyone here think we would have won if we had landed 2 early penalties?
Wales were just better in so many ways today. Yes we made some terrible defensive errors but let's take nothing away from the team in Red.
Scarey thing is they are so young. The next few 6 Nations should we very interesting.

It did cost us... but Kidney would not even have him on the bench as an option to counteract Warburton. . Leamy was a waste of a position in the 22. But, I still think Wales would have won, either way. They wanted it more. They were better all over the park. FACT.
Getting out for a walk helped lift the impending post game depression. And Leinster won. So....

I think the first time going for the lineout was understandable but the next 2 times, if it were me, I'd have gone for the kicks. Ireland were playing with the wind behind them first half, so I would have thought it would have been easier? not sure though, don't understand all the technicalities of kicking myself

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
From here maybe Glas, but in the heat of the moment, the wind, wrong side of the pitch.... who knows.
Look even if we had got say six of those points I still think the Wales gameplan would have held firm. Might have been a (more) nervy last quarter though.

To me it was a mistake at the time and I posted as much in here.
Gibbo, I genuinely feel for you...and Jennings and he doesn't even play for a team I support. You are the exception that proves the rule that a prophet is rarely recognised in his own land, because you are not. In your own land that is.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
We didn't need Jennings we just needed our back row to get to the breakdown like they did in the Australia and Italy games and they didn't.
Wales's back row were fantastic. I have never seen SOB knocked back with such consistency.
Jennings wouldn't have made us stronger.

You're right to have your say Glas but to be honest while Jennings is a useful seven I don't think he is good enough at International level. Mrs P is right he wouldn't have made a difference.

I won't say Wales would have won, but the mindset of the teams could have been very different and we could have seen the game pan out very differently. At 7-0 up and Wales defending their line, they are doing so in the knowledge that they can play to the limits of the law, and give up 3 points and still be ahead, so it makes their decision making at the tackle area easy.
At 7-6, they know if they get pinged they potentially go behind, and give Ireland the momentum of going in front. Different mindset, potential different outcomes.
Don't get me wrong, it's all ifs and buts anyway, Wales won, and thoroughly deserved to. Their coaching staff selected a gameplan to nulify the Irish attacking threat and the players executed it perfectly. It doesn't get better than that in a team sport.

Yes Pete but I was taught in a cup game you take the easiest available points at offer at any given opportunity, wherever you are, whatever the weather.

Wales's back row were fantastic. I have never seen SOB knocked back with such consistency.
Jennings wouldn't have made us stronger.
He would have at least made fight of it with Warburton. It is his specialty. SOB was way out his depth. We know now he is not a top 7. And never will be.
Anyway... its all immaterial now.
Well done to Wales and France. Both like to play rugby.
