The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of pub regulars. We've got the big group pic from the HEC final in Cardiff, plus insets of ll those who couldn't make it
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Man walks up to a bouncer with a tie made of jump leads.
The bouncer said 'OK you can go in but don't try to start anything'

I was just reading a rather amusing story about Tiger Woods getting a hotdog thrown at him during a competition. What a waste of good food though...

Wotcha Rava,
Great weekend, could have done with a few more helping hands though;cooked about 50 metres from where they ate, so loads of walking, and bad cramps last night, and today a big chill-out;got to watch the Ire/Wal and Aus /AfS matches this afternoon, although I did fall asleep for 20 mins of the 2nd half of the latter.
Haven't seen the French performance, although in the kitchen Yvan(your petanque coach) had updates every 5 minutes
looks like a Fra/NZd final in perspective, although it is well known that the French cannot produce 2 good games on the run. There again,Wales were great defensively(with a little help from a friend)but apart from a couple of bulldozers up the middle, seem to lack invention. The French backrow were, apparently, imperial;about time HairyDonkey got his game together.

Alex Salmond would love that. If the Scots had to support a shared sports team with the English the referendum would be a fait accompli!
The United Kingdom is an interesting place. The Guardian is running a series on national identity, they were asking for people to send in videos talking about their national identity. I got featured because I said in the era of devolution, British-ness means nothing. It's an increasingly apparent artificial identity used to paper the cracks between the union of four completely distinct countries. In Northern Ireland, all being British means is a statement of 'not being Irish'. Someone like David Cameron has as much relevance as Nicolas Sarkozy; a man elected by a different electorate in a very different society with a very different political landscape. Except he feels he has the right to pontificate about what should happen over here and, more scarily, he does to an extent.
We live in interesting times. The UK is slowly drifting apart.

Notch,
Living outside of the UK&NI/GB&NI or whatever it is now called,I tell people that I'm British because that is my identity.I also prefer to say I'm European rather than insisting on a mono-nationalist origin.
And why on earth shouldn't the French and Italians be part of a VI Nations Lions,or is tradition in rugby sacrosanct?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I think they should for sure. I think that would be better. We already have two distinct nations coming together, so why not extend it to four? We are more likely to be competitive too. I just don't thin the big French clubs would get on board and I'm guessing they have quite a lot of clout. I remember well the ignominious end to Nathan Hines Perpignan career when he was selected for the Lions.
English people seem to have the strongest connection to the term 'British', funnily enough. Which is fair enough, if thats what they want. I don't even carry a British passport, I carry an Irish passport. I have no objection to being in the UK, but only if it changes significantly. I'm a big believer in local democracy, but right now important decisions are being taken about policy that affects my country in a different country. A federal UK is the only way it will survive; the UK has advantages but it must move further towards a federal/devolved model.

Notch I think that's because a fair few of the English consider English and British as the same thing. I know a lot of my friends at Uni didn't ever differentiate between the two which I found most odd.

Yeah,Notch,I'm very old school, and have no problems with being British;what I do try to defend is the non-English being considered as such, although I have noticed a marked change in mentality over the past 20 years, and my accent is no longer English, a more"where are you from?" accent for the majority of people I meetand talk with.

Just spent an agreeable evening watching the video of the match. Ireland will be gutted to have played so well and lose.

Glas,
The only other time I've been in hospital is to visit. Dangerous place. Full of sick people.
Yeah man, I watched the game again - eventually. BOD has to take the blame for refusing to take the kicks early on. WTF was ROG doing on the field if not? And Kidney for not being able to adapt his failing game-plan. Gatland shafted him tactically. It was too easy. And... we need a 7. All the top 4 teams have a ground-hog. Coincidence? I think not. So I hope that's the end of the all ball-carrying backrow experiment. This has been gong on for over 10 years now. Not working

Hey Pete, I'm feeling a bit sick coz I've juts eaten too much, other then that I'm fab, how're you?
Gibbo - I think against some teams an all ball-carrying backrow can work, just though like you said if it's not working you have to be able to adapt. Ireland need to find a long term option there for sure

The great goal drought of MBTGOG is finally over. Scored a goal in a 1-1 draw. Good result against a far superior side!
Had two very interesting classes today. One on behaviour management in coaching and pedagogy and one on a Marxist perspective on deviance in sport. Basically, sport is corrupt from top to bottom. I know people will say they know, but it's hard to get a real grasp on how bad it is. Kind of hard to argue with any of it really.

I'll say things look promising dreamer, I am happy with the way we are trying to play the game, and the youngsters have brought energy and enthusiasm to the fore.
Shingler looks a good, intelligent player. Not 100% sure he will make it onto the international stage though, he seems to lack a bit of pace, but will be a very good player for us I am sure.

I think Shingler could if possible make a better FB then 10 Pete, he certainly played very well there for both the Wales U20's and the Scarlets. I like him at 10 though personally, think he reads the game very well and also has the ability to play 12. Just hope his versatility doesn't end up hurting him.

Gibbo, who do we have as an option for groundhog. Jenno has failed to step up to the mark on a lot of occasions for Ireland.

What a magnificent servant to Argentine rugby. Deserves all the plaudits he gets and he really won't get as much as he deserves.

It's not an experiment Gibbo; we have a choice between a ball-carrying backrow of good players or one with a groundhog 7 who is shoite. It's like we need crash ball runners in midfield but no-one is backing Ian Whitten or James Downey to step up because they are... well, shoite.

I read an article with some quotes in it from Ledesma earlier, I'll see if I can find it again, but it just summed up to me his commitment to the shirt and to the cause of Arentinian rugby. He's an incredible man and rugby player.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
He is, to be honest. An overrated player who can only fit into one gameplan. I was completely unimpressd with him in the Heineken Cup.
'Shoite' is harsh, because he's is a solid, reliable club player- bit like Jennings or even... Paddy Wallace.

Still in denial? Then why did Kidney take him? It was crying out for him on the bench. Who does he use? Leamy. I mean. Its amazing. Ah well.
We need to source and develop a top 7, provincially. Its as simple as that. Even Wally wasn't good enough. He was a mini SOB.
Time to be honest. Again.
Actually its pointless talking about it on here.
So carry on regardless.

Yeah, the thing is... if we had a player like that who was good enough he'd be in like a shot. You're not the only person who can see this. I can see it, the coaches can see it.
We need to produce that kind of player more. We haven't had one since Gleeson retired.

Shingler has been playing at 12 for us and looks good there. Not convinced he would make a top class 15 he doesn't look to have the pace for it. Am pleased with his performances for us though.
