The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has teleported itself inside Millenium Stadium this week to see if the men in red can manage a Slam. There's also TVs showing the other 6N matches, the U20s and Womens' matches, Super XV, the "Classic" match and LV= Cup action.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Mervyn Davies and Jock Hobbs above the bar!

I'm not one to criticise the ref, so these blue/black jerseys must make it very difficult to see anything.

Totally agree with all of that. Makes pure sense to me. I said it just earlier, only with less grace, eloquence of speech & style.
Notch,
That sounds beautiful man. Pretty colours over Newtonards. Jean-Michelle Jarre or Jean-Luc Ponty musak to set it all off?

A much better Irish performance in the second half but so many handling errors. Don't really look as if they can open up the England defence though.

England won 20 points to 9. Probably should have been a bigger England win. Some exciting players at this level.
Ireland tried extremely hard especially in the second half. Gave the ball back to them too easily and too often.

Nope Gibbo, England lost to France last week.
FT 20-9 to England.
England, France and Ireland all finish on 8 championship points with 4 wins each, but England win on points difference and France pip Ireland to second!

Not bad. Ireland U20 are moving under Ruddock. At least they learned how to win in France.
Young England should blow us away at that level tbh. Things is, 90% of them will never make it to full international level.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
English players are massively bigger than Ireland; so are Frances for that matter. To win a Grand Slam with both of them away would have been an insanely big achievement for us at this level. As it is, England U20s were a cut above Ireland. Probably a couple of years ahead of us in terms of development in truth.
To win 4 out of 5 constitutes a good tournament. I'm glad we've persisted with an offloading style and Jackson as kicker. We need players to get experience of executing these skills and Jackson needs to work on his kicking in a game environment. From a development point of view there are a few guys who will have benefitted hugely from this tournament.

Better 2nd half by Ireland, but your boys have hands like digital clocks (none). JJH was good and bad - mixed bag from him.
My overall take was that England invariably made yards in the close quarter exchanges, and put Ireland under pressure. The Ireland lads did not manage to get that part of their game going until the last 20.
It really should have been a bigger win for England.
Still, no one will give a rat's rear end come 17:00 tomorrow

It;s interesting the way different countries view the game Glas. I think in Ireland, the two words that most readily spring to mind about rugby are character and determination.

Ireland very unlucky to finish 3rd overall. Huge win away in France which will surely stay with them in years to come. Paddy Jackson as captain. I had my doubts, but surely that's an inspired appointment.

Roughly translated, we will always be muckers, so lets give it an aul defensive lash anyway and limit our Allah-given talents. Im not joking either.
Drives me mental. It started in Munster, was cultured by 2 x retrospective Cork coaches and it is a continuing malaise.

I agree Gibbo. To play with the verve all the great teams have our mindset needs to evolve. We'll never have the forward dominance big English or Saffer teams have so we need to use our backs better. Our provinces do it. Our nation doesn't.

Liked what Ive seen of Jackson. Hope he comes good at full level.
But, and I have to say this... not blowing smoke up Ulster orses, Best is the business as a leader. I watched it happen in front of my eyes. POC & BOD are reserved. Its the Kafflic way. Rory has big Proddy elephant balls. I hope Kidney see's it and leaves him there. Ulster captains have History.
Leave him there.

Rory stepped up against Scotland. Lets just wait and see how he goes from here before we write any big statements about his Captaincy. Given his age profile he's probably going to get to wear the armband a good few more times.
Was really proud of how he conducted himself against Scotland.

For what it's worth I would have O'Connell lead the 2013 Lions if he wants to - and I think he would love to. He would also be honest enough to say if he didn't think he would be the best choice. I called him for the job in 2009, and would do so again.
Ireland is a different matter. You could do with investing some faith in the youngsters with Rabo an HC experience. It will be tough to get a top 4 seed for the next RWC, so make sure you're the best of the four teams in whatever Pool you draw.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Millennium Stadium Rugby Pub
O Connell is not smart enough to lead at the highest level. Sorry (Im not) but he is a poor man's BOD. And BOD is not a great Captain either.
Its just the way BOD plays, made it common-sense for him to have the privilege. He leads with intelligence, in his mad defensive actions and on-the-spot-guidance at the back.
He will still do all that no matter who is official Captain. And he will. As will POC. Its in them. Same with ROG.
But. Rory has been one of our best players for 2 years now, imo. Just give it to him. It actually makes him and us better. That's the sign of a man who thrives on it.
Anyway, feic ye all. I vote Rory.

We need as many Captains as we can get. Sexton & Kearney are too.
Healy, Ross, DOC, Jamie H (tweet-tweet) all the rest are patently not captain material.
5 or 6 Captains, in all the key areas. That, is what will take us higher. That and a decent coach.

Peter O'Mahony has already Captained Munster hasn't he? He could emerge as a future leader. Ferris and Heaslip, on the other hand, absolutely aren't Captaincy material.

Man, meant DOC, not POM. We dont know enough about him yet. But, I'll tell you what, he takes no sheet. Does not back down. I like him. He made a point of saying to the meeja, that he wants to learn at 7. Very smart. Low key, but gagging for that gap. And we dont have one. I like cold-hearted ambition.

I wish he was starting tomorrow. He didn't deserve to be dropped. Came in for his first start in international rugby, did really well, actually did some great work at the breakdown and he was dropped like yesterdays paper.
A harsh and short sighted call but he has a big future in the game.

Evening fellas, just a quick in and out for me tonight - yeah, I know; "no change there" .
Lions captain next year is almost certainly going to be Warburton, Gatland is almost certainly going to be head coach and he is almost certainly not going to move outside his fold for leader.
All of our representative 1st XV's are getting younger and younger and that is testament (finally) to the talent the NH is producing through the change to professional rugby.
Surely that young talent can't and wont be dashed to pieces on the hard rocky outcrop of "experience"?
Let the feckin rugrats run with it and to hell with the consequences, some of these players are so young they've still got the boxes they came in, they still bounce at that age too.
Throw the kids at Australia next year and frighten the feck out of the Aussies at how good our babies are.
Ta.

PJ, lets have man-sex bud. This Pub needs to raise its prices to stop kids drinking alchopops and missing the whole point. By the time they actually get it, we'll be dead TF.
Ound, dont ever stop being an Englishman with an Irish heart. Its a stunning contradiction to behold.
Our Home Nation squads are getting younger and stronger. Called for it for Ireland 3 years ago. And here we are. Still shoite. But. Thank Bhudda for injuries.
Warburton is nailed-on to be Lions Captain. As is Gatland as coach. No argument there.
And Notch, Im not drunk. Im stoned man. Get it right. The sentiment changes not a whisker.
Kids. Sheesh.

I'm sorry I missed you guys too. I was hoping we could meet before the game.
But it just needed to be a family day; hadn't seen my sister or bro-in-law in ages (she's the one that lives in Rathgar/Rathmines, near Mickado) and I hadn't seen my parents in a wee while either. I knew I couldn't meet after the match because they had gone to the trouble of booking a restaurant for my birthday and making a whole big fuss about it.
With them sorting the tickets for the game and the restaurant, couldn't just swan off to meet other people. They showed me a lot of love arranging this day for me and I needed to appreciate it as much as I appreciate them.

Just spent my first sober Friday in such a long time. Daughter was at a Birthday Party in Portrush. Daddy had to do taxi service.

That, my man, is everything. The rest, can buy tickets and queue outside. Im the same when it comes to mine.
Dont ever change.

Morning all
Happy St Patrick's Day. Guess I'll have to drink some more Guinness.
Up really early. My wife had to work and I am now too excited to sleep again though I really want to. Never mind eh, train in 4.5 hours. Really hope we do it, but the pressure is going to be so much today.
