The Dew Drop Inn Virtual HEC Final Rugby Pub, Twickenham
First topic message reminder :
Chin chin and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The pub has arrived in London this week for the Heineken Cup final so has stocked up on cucumber sandwiches ( - KRD ) and Pimms.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Ruan Pienaar, Stephen Ferris, Jonathon Sexton, Rob Kearney and Jonny Wilkinson (the five nominees for the ERC Player of the Year award), Nigel Owens the HEC final referee or Adam Powell (captain of Llanelli RFC who are playing Ponty in the Welsh club final on Friday). The CCTV snaps of Prop_Lyd and the other Cardiff Saracens players on tour in Croatia are fair game though.

I hadn't even realised that was the case Billy. The only one I'd seen questioned was that worldofpain bloke by Asbo.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual HEC Final Rugby Pub, Twickenham
The guys i recommeded were hounded a while back but when i started recommending again (yesterday) lo and behold i get a mail from one saying that he doesnt want to resign in again because he noticed it still happening.

It is indeed. Admins and Site Owners should be taking note.
You want to make things exciting when you log on. Its bad enough having limited functionality (on old 606V2) you needed to have all comments premoderated for example.

If he is having a laugh thinking he has fooled us then well and good but he isn't getting anyone angry. No big deal.
Actually I have it on good information that one poster is actually Sparky the old stuffed bear that is the Ulster mascot!! Have a guess who after all his claims at being the inside man at Ulster.

The saddest thing is, i had invited many posters to the snooker section for the World Championships and because of things like this they went to another forum.

I know the guy who used to be Sparky's minder!
How impressive is that?
William,
Are folks just being mean to newbies? Is it that they are accusing everyone of being GG or is it just general meaness?

Kiwi I reckon Leo was Madigan on Saturday. Cheating barsteward had proper boots on and all.
I suppose he probably learned from the previous year. That was it for me actually. When we lost the HT kicking contest I just knew the writing was on the wall

MrsP,
I had some new posters a while back who told me that they got hassled about being TGG so didnt post here anymore and yesterday i suggested a couple more people join up from the Dutch boards here and i just got a no thanks mail today because one guy saw the hassel and was worried that his English would be mocked.

Sad thing is, some of these Dutch guys are mad keen on rugby and are actually very knowledgable and would make great assets to the board.

That's a real shame.
I think your man "pain" is probably having a laugh but it is sad that folks would be put off because they think they would be mocked about their english.
As opposed to their opinions.
Seriously though, any thoughts on a solution?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual HEC Final Rugby Pub, Twickenham
There have been a fair number of posters (from quite a few nations) on their high horses of late, and a number of newbies have copped it - it's not uncommon for a newbie to (accidentally) comment something that's been done to death and cop a reaction, or be a bit brash initially.
I've started commenting on posts where people aren't necessarily breaking house rules, but are being a bit ill-mannered - it's gotten me in arguments a couple of times, but I'm a bit peeved by the lack of respect coming through sometimes.

To me, i just feel that its important to welcome these new posters. They dont fully understand the nuances that are involved in the English language but are really keen to get involved. Its a trend that i would like to see stopped.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual HEC Final Rugby Pub, Twickenham
Is there a way of easing them in gently?
Maybe start them off on a thread with lots of us around where they can feel their way a bit? Give us a heads up of their user names so we can watch out for them?
Some Fora have specific rules about being nice to Newbies.

Or a general announcement that noone should be mocked about their command of English unless you know them extremely well. If that allows someone to play the fool so be it. What have we lost so long as they obey the rules?

I miss him.
Hey, but everyone else is here!

I agree Mrs, even I with my masterful skill of the english language gets sarcastic quips when I make the odd grammatical mistake (yeah I know, shocking to know I am prone to the odd error)MrsP wrote:Or a general announcement that noone should be mocked about their command of English unless you know them extremely well.
