The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The Pub has followed the victorious Leinster team home after last week's Heineken Cup final for a liver-busting celebration.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the picture of the late Simon "Human Windmill" Pitney or those of all the HEC and Amlin Cup finalists.

Luckless while I do agree with him to some extent, Rowan Williams is a poet/theologian/writer/philosopher/AKA The Arts.
It is a lot easy for him to preach about imagination and emotions but the same cannot be said of someone who is looking for a background in science, IT, mathematics, engineering etc.
These are usually things that are Yes or No, Right or Wrong, Black or White where as in things like Geography, Economics, English, History, Languages etc it is far easier to be more imaginative and emotional I would say.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
That's true, Stag, but he's right to say that there's a danger in education becoming so results-driven that instead of being enriched by their education, pupils leave school simply knowing a number of facts - the facts they need to pass their exams. That shouldn't be the bottom line when it comes to education. It's also about improvement.

I disagree Stag. People in IT need imagination to come up with some varied answers to the problems thrown up in that field. As for science, at any level up to abolut undergraduate level, there are right / wrong answers, but beyond that the arguments rage before a theory is accepted by the community as a whole and then becomes part of our knowledge for the whole science.
PhD candidates when they submit their thesis (and remember a "thesis" is an argument) have to defend their thesis in a viva examination. Science would get nowhere without imagination.

"pupils leave school simply knowing a number of facts"
It would be nice if they did know some facts, Luckless. Tragedy is that too much of their work is a cut and paste having googled the question ...
As for exams today - don't get me started.
Rowan Williams is right as ever. Preparing youngsters for the economy today is a rubbish idea - by the time they emerge from the system the economy will have changed so that their skills are out of date.
Anyway, have a good day everyone. I'm off to a funeral

You should have a chat with my 15 year old daughter. I don't think she would be pleased that you believe she googles the questions.
Considering the hours she has spent preparing for this session of exams I know she doesn't!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
But Kia, surely third level is the time to be introducing that to science. You say at PhD level they to defend their work etc.
I would say that school is about learning the facts, undergraduate is about exploring these facts further, masters is about using this exploration to possibly find out something new and PhD should be about becoming a leading expert in that field.
OK the under grad, masters, PhD thing is a bit of a generalisation but I think that you need to have a grasp of the facts first and that is what school is for.

I thought in Science there were no 'facts', just theories to be proved or disproved?....

So it turns out Kurtly Beale could yet play a part in the Test series against Wales. I don't mind him coming back for the third Test providing we've already won the first two!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
- well done mucker
- on the Wales v Australia front. on the eye front
Leinster Fans - I thought the Ospreys just about deserved to shade it - if only for the way they refused to lie down. As the little winger himself said it was "commendable". However, I don't hold with the "we've beaten you 3 times this season so we are much better than you"
Leinster have been magnificent this season, they just caught the O's on their own rich vein of form. Another day and it could have gone the other way

Pete,
I was so impressed with the Ospreys. They are standing on the cusp of being a really good team. Winning the Heineken Cup should be the aim next season regardless of the draw (though getting Leinster, Clermont and Exeter would be a tough one).

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
STAG - there seems to have been an amazing volte-face since Tandy took over. They look like they have a strategy the team are comfortable with. This in turn leads to them playing as a team and they are no longer soley reliant on power up front and lets hoof it down the park and hope there's some individual brilliance from someone. We are actually executing back moves I'm quietly excited about next season

You should be. Also don't underestimate how big an influence that final will be in terms of your Euro matches.

Penfro - cheers mucker. I so want to watch that Wales v Aus game in Cardiff and experience the atmosphere. I may well get the 12:25 train* - I should still make it back for Eng v SA.
* so long as I don't get an earlier train than the 11:25 I'm ok.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
I volunteered to be the "host" of the whisky tasting "room" at a charity event at work on Thursday night (they're doing wine tastings as well) - got promised a bottle of whisky for my "pains" too.
Unfortunately I just got sent the tasting notes for the bottles that are being donated to the tasting
3 bourbon whiskeys (one of them is "Red Stag" bourbon admittedly), and 3 blended scotches . I mean if they couldn't bring themselves to donate a decent single malt (and the comapny in question does own several nice distilleries) they could at least have thrown in an Irish whiskey as a partial compensation.
Oh well, it is for charity I suppose.

Afternoon all. Absolutely done in from circuits this morning. So much so, I think I'll be napping this aft.
Hound, sorry about the eye. I'll try popping into the big smoke for the test I expect.
Nice one on your news Kiwi.
Lucky, they all did alright. I commented on Sunday how Bishop butchered a chance after his break by not committing his man, allowing Webb to get caught easier.
Anyway, zzzzzzzzzzzzz

"Prefers" rather than "only likes" Rava - and I'll happily drink Irish whiskey over blended whisky. But who sends Jim Beam White Label to a tasting? It's an OK drop when suitably diluted with cola, but on it's own
Edit, I've persuaded them to ditch the Jim Beam.
Stag, cheers, reply sent

It is no on anywhere MrsP. RTE blew their rugby budget on the RWC (why they don't have HC) so I don't think they have any stuff they weren't contracted for.

IRFU say it was the Barbarians- as the 'home team'- who decided not to sell the TV rights.
Whoever in the IRFU agreed the deal with Barbarians FC needs a good, hard slap. We're playing them in England and it's not on TV. So as far as off the pitch benefits, what the hell do we get? Nada. Meanwhile England and Wales are selling tickets for home games which are live on Sky Sports.

No idea mate, how many different ways can you right the same sentence, it was more like a comprehension test than a test on your knowledge about the regulatory laws.
I remember I decided I hate comprhehension when I was in grade 3.
We read a book and the sentence was, "the dog is motionless like a log"
I said it means he is dead, the teacher differed with me.
She said "no, he is sleeping"
Right then and there, I decided it is bollix.
