Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
First topic message reminder :
Ukraine v France (17:00, ITV 1)
Sweden v England (19:45, BBC 1)
Current Group Standings
Ukraine - 3
England - 1
France - 1
Sweden - 0
Group D for Day 8 of the tournament then. At 5, the co-hosts Ukraine will be looking to notch their second win of the competition by causing a shock against the French but in reality, France are strong favourites and will probably win. Then at 7:45, England will look to build on the foundations they've laid on Monday and get 3 points against a team they haven't beaten competitively in years. For Sweden, 3 points is near essential to them staying in the competition after a narrow defeat on Monday. My predictions:
Ukraine 1-2 France
Sweden 0-2 England
En-ger-land, En-ger-land, En-ger-land...

Wellbeck has surprised me. I thought he was a cart horse. Good player for a Manc.

Good stuff England. Not a great game in quality, but great for excitement.

Good thing is that England didn't panic and got themselves back into the game and importantly retained their shape once they got back into the game.

Ah well England got the victory. The Ukraine match will be very intersting now. England only need a draw and Ukraine needing the win. No doubt England will be mighty world beaters tomorrow, 1966 all over again bla bla but then it makes it all the more fun for the KO stages

The one thing I will say is that England have some much needed explosive pace in the team and what a difference Walcott made.

Re: Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
shocking from england, sweden were an appaling side full of OAP's. Anyone with half a brain knew Walcott's pace would kill them. Basically looking at a QF vs Spain where it will end.
Lets be realistic this side is woeful. Also i'm expecting walcott fans to be all over this performance but up against OAP's what do you expect. Against a quality left back and defence he's embarrasingly poor. However, tonight he did well but that's because of the poor, poor opposition

Well done England, though you didn't half make me sweat. Walcott made the difference I think although, a very good goal from Welbeck.

France will win group, sweden are appaling and have nothing to play for. We struggled embarrasingly against a shocking sweden and you think we're gonna walkover a Ukraine side.??????????

Struggled for 15 minutes all game.
Other than that Sweden done nothing.
Can't see Ukraine hurting us like the Swedes have.
Bottom line is despite not being our best we won.

What a rollercoaster! Let's see here, England were the better team and one bit of bit defending and a fortunate OG see Sweden in front. Tremendous spirit and a great substitution see England home, not to mention two fantastic finishes! One second:
Think the England team underestimated Sweden a tad, there wasn't so much hunger or intensity shown from the England team as there was against the French.
Time to step it up for Ukraine and win and hopefully top the group.
Vindaloo, Vindaloo, Vindaloo, Vindaloo, na na
Vindaloo, Vindaloo, Vindaloo, Vindaloo, na na
Vindaloo, Vindaloo and we all like vindaloo
We're England!
We're gonna score one more than you
England!

Re: Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
Ashley Young had a very poor game - completely clueless for the first Swedish goal. The whole English defence disappeared for the second goal. Roy Hodgson did a good job in terms of setting the team up and changing the system when England went behind.

Re: Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
Oh well. Decent effort from a team who's probably one of the three worst in the competition. Nice effort boys. Two flukes though we had one ourselves, think a draw would have been fair.
From an English perspective, I honestly would not be proud of that performance. This is the worst Sweden team in ages, the 2002 team is a million times better. England should have won comfortably, I was actually really surprised Sweden managed to qualify for the Euros in the first place.
Mellberg - what a player.

we had 10 minutes of madness- after that we played much better. showed us we can step up- it was possibly the best thing for england to be under the cosh early on- because we will now have so much more confidence

if anyone thinks that sweden are bad side then they may have a point- but what you all have to remember is that they are almost designed as a team to counter our football. We allways have issues with them, we have very similar styles, yet they are even more physical. And ibram could honestly do well against any team- he is a top class player- the rest nope- but against the english they are very well set

Haters - what?
Haters - what?
Haters - what?
Get in England!
How many times have we seen them collapse and fail?
Not tonight. Sorted themselves out, and did the job.
They'll learn from that.

Re: Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
I'm Welsh, and find the "anyone but england" stance embarassing. Really embarassing.
When we get drawn against them in the qualifiers, and Welsh fans are acting like its the biggest game in the world, then you look over at the England fans who couldn't give a crap, its just another game - that's embarassing.
What Roy Keane said yesterday about Ireland is a cap that fits for Wales too. Let's worry about our own game, and our own deficiencies, and start questioning why Croatia can qualify for every tournament with a population of 3 million but we can't even get close, rather than worrying about England losing in tournaments.
Its the only thing I hate about being Welsh
That and bilingual road signs

Duty281 and mystiroakey...you are free to support whichever country you want in football or any other sport. I really didnt care when all the English were supporting France last October in the RWC semi-final and if by some miracle Wales qualified for a tourny and England didnt I really wouldnt take any offense at all to you lot cheering on our opponents. Get over it

how anyone could be embarrased by us only beating sweden by a goal is beyond me. Does he think we are spain or germany, even those teams should just be happy to win in the groups!! esp being down and coming back.. odd comments really.
One very important thing to remember is that adding rooney is like the difference between sweden without ibram and sweden without him. Possibly a completly different team- add walcot to start and ermm, the team actually looks good. I feel as though gerrard without lampard is twice the player as well!

Re: Euro 2012: Day 8 Thread
Reality
England poor but they won. Shocking Sweden team with no pace whatsoever, Hodgson should of played Walcott from beginning it was inevitable that he would run rings around their OAP's. That said, Walcott is still poor in my opinion, if he didnt have pace he wouldnt be in the squad. Against quality teams Milner will always play as he defends and suits Hodgson's tactics. Young was dreadful as was Johnson. Terry's pace was shocking. Yes, Rooney coming back is going to add something but he hasnt played 90mins for over a month. He's a player that needs games, I can see him performing the way he was in South Africa.
Much difficult last game than france will encounter, expect both to win but France to win group on GD. Likely to face Spain in QF and we will be out.
Agree?

In rugby I agree it is embarrassing we are better than England anyway so why care about how they do but in regards to football England and their prima donna players, thuggish fans and arrogant press are pretty much hated all across the Isles so I dont really have a problem with it. Why do you not like bilingual road signs as well. Is it becasue they have English on them?Electric Demon wrote:I'm Welsh, and find the "anyone but england" stance embarassing. Really embarassing.
