The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Antananarivo Arms, Madagascar
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Antananarivo Arms Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Madagascar, where 35,000 raucous fans recently watched the home side upset Namibia in a 110-point thriller.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of the Madagascan team war dance, Japan/NRL-bound Sonny-Bill Williams, Bradley Wiggins and the prematurely-retired Mark Boucher above the bar.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Antananarivo Arms, Madagascar
"I couldn't give a pair of fat rat's clackers what you think!"... a mate of mine used to tell lots of people.
Good morning everyone...
I got a bit of a shock this morning when I saw some footage of the amount of Australian coal just lying on the docks in China. Mountains of it over acres & acres. Talk about a stockpile! We are in a mining frenzy at the moment, big gas project gets approval. Everyone's ripping resources outta the ground. You've got to see how big these projects are... mind boggling.
However, today I heard again - Demand for steel is dropping off - you'd think they might have realised that fact a while ago when all those tens of thousands of floors of residential and commercial office buildings still remain empty! (but for how long I wonder?)
They had some old Chinese guy from the countryside who had never seen a skyscraper before.
I bet he can't wait 'til he gets to see a 'skyscraper full of people'... (the missing ingredient)...

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Antananarivo Arms, Madagascar
Friend of line who plays guitar a bit was in a jam session in a pub in Roundstone at the weekend. This English guy with shaggy hair and scruffy beard asked could he join them and then proceeded to sing for the next couple of hours - mainly country stuff., My friend said he looked a bit familiar and thought the voice was familiar but only after about the 5th pint did he ask the English guy's name.
"Sorry, my name's Robert Plant", the English guy said. Needless to say, my firend thanked his lucky start tha't he hadn't tried to sing his usual 6th pint party piece of Stairway to Heaven.
Now, it's the Boss on Wed night on the hallowed sward of the RDS. Seems Bruce got mightily miffed at the Isle of Wight when the organisers pulled the plug on the amps just as he was going to do a duet with Macca. Admittedly, Bruce being Bruce that was after 3.5 hours and they were half an hour over the time, but jeez often are you going to see the Boss and Macca on stage together.
Saw a few clips of the gig on Sky Arts last night, the band now has a four-man horn and brass section which Clarence Clemens' nephew. Can't wait for Wed even though only ticket I could get was standing on the pitch and it's bound to p1ss rain

Breaker thats interesting about the demand for steel falling, pretty ominous really. Mind you its a no brainer with so many empty commercial properties around.

I think their govt will do a stimulus package thing - try and keep growth up around the 8% mark. So there will still be plenty of infrastructure-type projects happening there for a long time to come.
Bunnies just holding on 12-10 to the surging Chooks in the Monday night NRL game... 53 mins. Good game so far between these old rivals.

Breaker how come the Australian economy is so strong compared to the other developed economies right now? Everywhere else is struggling to see any growth at all.
Is it because they export to China or is it domestic demand?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Antananarivo Arms, Madagascar
Rodders,
the mining & natural resources sector is still only 19% of GDP, services sector about 70%.
Main exports - China 25%, Japan 19%, Korea 9%, India 7%, USA 4%.
We have low debt, low inflation and low unemployment - and the abundance of natural resources has helped us survive through the tough times.
The Roosters have scored a couple of tries. They now lead 22-10. 4 mins to go.

I'm really looking forward to the Olympics, Rodders; but I'm looking forward to it because it's a whole load of the best athletes on the planet competing against each other, not because it's happening in London. I'd be just as excited if it was being held in Riga or Ankara or anywhere else. Actually, if it was being held somewhere else, I'd be more excited because we wouldn't have had all the media overkill (much more to come), the torch nonsense and the false claims that these games belong to the whole of the UK.
On a sporting level, it's going to be awesome and I can't wait!

Continuing for a while yet, Rodders - even with slower growth in China there are still huge contracts to be delivered over next 3-5 years and there are also other developing markets with relatively high demand for our resources.rodders wrote:Nice one Breaker but do you see that trend continuing or as China's growth slows will that have a significant impact on the Australian growth?
Still can't get over that game - the Rabbitohs are now 4th on the ladder equal with Brisbane.

I'm not so sure. Apart from the mens 100m I don't think there's that many exciting athletes around these days, compared to the recent past. Because of the weather conditions I'm not sure we'll get that many world records broken in the track and field events either.
I'll probably get into it a bit when it's on but I can't think of too much to get excited about at this stage. Sorry .

Exciting indeed LB, and also very scary. I still have regular WTF am I doing?! moments.
I have a range of cakes I'm confident in making, I can turn them out to the same standard each time, mainly sponge and fruit cakes. I'm steering clear of cupcakes, that market is well and truly covered, and going for the traditional stuff. And I'm looking for a decorating training course, I need to learn more if I'm to improve and get faster at decorating.

Saw a great show on RTE last week about a cake shop, it's basically like a Mary Portas type show where Fergal Quinn (a big name in Irish retail) goes to businesses and shows them how to operate. It's probably on the RTE player, it might even be available internationally, worth having a look for either way. Great name by the way!

Sounds great.
Are you going to take photos and build up a catalogue of them?
I noticed in Japan they have these very realistic 'food models'... incredible detail and texture. Fooled me once or twice; they look so real.

You're probably right about the world records, Rodders, but you don't need a world record to be broken for an event to be thrilling, in the same way that you can have a cracking game of rugby without a hatload of tries being scored.
Is hatload a word?
