- It is preseason and the new rich owners of Reading have decided that Brian McDermott is not the man to take the club forward, and your team have been recruited to oversee the plans that will ultimately see them stay up in the Premier League.
You will find a suitable new manager and have been given £20m for buying players to achieve this target. The cost of player purchases will be those on http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk plus 20%. You can raise further funds through players sales – the price you will receive will be http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk less 20%. Loaning in a player will cost 20% of their TM value. A player who is not contracted, will be free to join you at no cost.
You will present your new manager and squad list (with details on all ins and outs), plus any other innovative ideas you have that will help the quest of staying up. This should be posted on this page no later than midday on Tuesday 17th July.
You will be judged on which team makes the best, most innovative and most realistic choices to keep Reading up.

I reckon we should put our whole team on a yoga regime.
I'm not even joking.
They will need calmness and serenity to battle relegation and not get too pressured, and Giggs does a load of it and he's playing at 38 to a high level.
Plus he was banging his brother's missus. So he has bags of energy.

Once we have offloaded those players. I will sort our players out into goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, strikers and we can go from there. Just some housekeeping to start off with

Actually forget the player scouting for the moment.
We will get rid of the deadwood first, then sort out the squad. Then decide where we need to strength, and who we will bring in, and where.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Guten abend my fellow Chilli Peppers. In the spoilers is my shortlist for managers. Give me feedback and let me know what you reckon - perhaps feedback in spoilers though!
- Spoiler:
- Potential manager candidates
I think we need to be a bit realistic in our appointment, even with money coming in. So I’ve looked mainly at managers with experience in the premier league, and particularly the lower reaches. All criticism accepted…
Alan Curbishley:
A personal favourite of mine, he ticks most boxes. Very experienced, has been involved in relegation battles, has managed a promoted side before, and has proven that he can build a foundation.
The cons would be that he doesn’t play the most attractive football, and perhaps lacks an x factor, but he should be seriously considered in my opinion.
Harry Redknapp:
Obviously would be an exceptional candidate. Has managed and kept up promoted sides, plays good attacking football, has stabilised clubs before, and is available on the market. He has said he would be interested in staying in the Premier League and we have some cash which he’ll love.
The cons could be that he may want a bit of a higher rep club. He may be a bit old to want to take on a building project, too.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:
A very talented coach, young and energetic. He has experience of playing and coaching in England and so there wouldn’t be too much bedding in. He may be at a club, but it is possible he’d enjoy the challenge, as well as the cash we could offer.
He may still lack experience as a manager, however, and he still needs to ‘fail’ or, at least experience being lower down a league.
Ian Holloway:
He has Premier League experience although fleeting, but that can’t be completely his fault, considering his resources. He plays attacking football and sometimes that surprise element can help keep you up (a’la Hull). He is affable and someone that can lead and build at a club given resources.
He may be tarnished by his relegation previously, and he does only have one full season in the Premier League.
Marcelo Bielsa:
This is maybe a giant leap for Reading, but I read he is resigning at Bilbao after a fall out, and he is an immense attack minded coach. As I say before sometimes attacking football is the best tact to keep you up - no fear! We have money to offer and he isn't too old to want a challenge.
He may have to adapt to English football first. He is also likely to be in demand if he is free because he is an exceptional coach, so we'd have to weigh up whether it's realistic.
Basically I expect you to be a little underwhelmed by my short list, but the aim is to keep Reading up - not have them break the top 4!

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Im not on for long will be on properly tomorrow, is there specific positions you want me to look for?
I don't know about Redknapp realistically I think he will take a little break and when he comes back it will to be a bigger club. I'm liking Curbs, he was linked to Birmingham not long ago and I feel the Reading job would tempt him. I think we should use real life situations so we can back up our points with proof rather then assumptions and guesses.

You do make a good point mate. Nothing is set in stone yet.
I will decide what positions I want you to look for when we have decided what we need to strengthen Viva. It will be decided when everyone is on tomorrow probably

I kind of agree with Viva, and that's why I put Curbishley top of my list. Redknapp would be the flashy appointment, but in reality I'm not sold that he'd be overly keen to join Reading at this stage.
With Curbishley I think he'd relish a place to build and he is very very good at it, as well as having the experience in exactly the areas we need.

- Spoiler:
Sean Morrison DF - not been playing for Reading much
Pierce Sweeney DF - very young, unlikely to be much use in the 1st team)
Garath McCleary MF - just signed I know, but we can upgrade and his loss may not be felt
Brynjar Gunnarsson MF - he's really quite old
Hal Robson-Kanu ST - not likely to be 1st team
Mathieu Manset ST - same
Simon Church ST - we can get a bit of money and upgrade him
I think to a degree we have to be realistic here too, and not make too many sweeping changes. Those we do release should be replaced by quality players with levels of experience, and ones that could be in the first team.
The risk if we make mass changes is discontent and fear in the squad, and damage to morale. If you look to the past few years, the teams that do better are the ones that don't try and tear the team that got them up apart (Swansea, Norwich), whereas those that make big changes sometimes struggle (QPR). Whatever changes we do make should be followed by some sort of team building exercise, in my opinion, to help the new guys bed in with the majority.

EDITED
- Spoiler:
- Probably wouldn't want to knowing what they spent on him! Reckon we could swing the wages if we work out how much they are likely to be for 10 months and take the cash from the transfer kitty instead though.
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/4422454/Andy-Carroll-transfer-West-Ham-target-Liverpool-striker.html
Bit of an iffy source sometimes but the Sun reckons 80k a week, so if the season is 10 months, that's 43 weeks, and thus his 80k a week costs us £3.4m in wages, and I reckon a small contribution as a loan fee would be welcome. Overall could be about £5m to get Carroll for the year.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
I agree with both of you. While I think it is a good signing and would help our team, it does take up a lot of our budget.
Lets decide who we need to release first, and then we can from there. Step by step, lets not get too ahead of ourselves.

Just had an idea
- Spoiler:
- Reading's attendances were pretty poor last season, so we need to encourage fans to come to games. Maybe we could freeze season ticket prices, and for away games put on free coach travel?? This way we can sell out every week, and take a good following away. It is a small thing, but having a good fanbase does help a lot

I like it
I was focussing on the players with my little ideas but I suppose it all helps in the end, to build a good feeling at the club as a whole.
I think little innovations like these are good and they all help towards the main aim.
