- Spoiler:
- It is preseason and the new rich owners of Reading have decided that Brian McDermott is not the man to take the club forward, and your team have been recruited to oversee the plans that will ultimately see them stay up in the Premier League.
You will find a suitable new manager and have been given £20m for buying players to achieve this target. The cost of player purchases will be those on http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk plus 20%. You can raise further funds through players sales – the price you will receive will be http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk less 20%. Loaning in a player will cost 20% of their TM value. A player who is not contracted, will be free to join you at no cost.
You will present your new manager and squad list (with details on all ins and outs), plus any other innovative ideas you have that will help the quest of staying up. This should be posted on this page no later than midday on Tuesday 17th July.
You will be judged on which team makes the best, most innovative and most realistic choices to keep Reading up.

Right guys it seems we have around £10M to spend. If we are to sign a striker we need to release two more players, and we seem to have an abundance of midfielders, so I would look to cut from there.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Alright men. We have to find a final striker, with £10m in our kitty. Then we will have to release two more players, to get down to a final 25. I want us to have this decided by Sunday evening.
Then we can use Monday to get a presentation of what we have done, and how we plan to keep Reading up done.
(Also think of little things we can do to help, like Soddy's yoga, and my ticket solution.)
I am away playing cricket this afternoon, so I put my faith into you. My loyal warriors

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
- Spoiler:
- My choices (I have added the 20 per cent):
Roque Santa Cruz: £4.1m
Carlton Cole: £5.28m
Hugo Rodallega: £4.8m
Fraizer Campbell: £3.72m
I would personally go for Fraizer myself.
Can I also suggest going for Craig Bellamy (he would cost £3.12m). Gives us more options and PL pedigree.
I have other ideas as well, but I want your opinions on where else we need to strengthen. Richard Dunne would be a good buy imo. Tim Cahill is another.
David Bentley (considering he is 27 and a great crosser of the ball) is available for £4.88m.
Can I also suggest going for David Beckham as a loan move. I think he would have a point to prove after being turned down for the Olympics. This coupled with the exposure he would get, increased ticket sales and merchandise and we would get a player known for his work ethic (even if for a few months in the winter MSL break)
Personally, if we could raise a little cash, I would go for Cole, Campbell, Bellamy and Bentley. If my maths is correct, we could get Bellamy, Cruz and Campbell for the cash we have.
And in answer to Bull's suggestion:
- Spoiler:
- Defoe is a good shout but I really feel we should not blow all the money on one player. We can get 3-4 quality PL standard players with £10.98m. My own feelings are we need a strong midfield, with hardworking players. I feel a 4-5-1 formation works. With this formation, Cahill would be an excellent buy.
As I said to Olly, I think we need PL based players rather than overseas players. Reading would need experience and a good work ethic. If you buy from abroad, you are always hoping that player will perform ok in the PL.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Cole/Santa Cruz don't really offer much that Pogs doesn't, and Rodallega has just moved to Fulham so he's out.
Frazier Campbell is a very good call though, I could see him working out for Reading, definitely.
Becks would be unattainable for me, but Bentley would work at RW. I also suggested Pennant earlier and I don't think he can be dismissed easily.

- Spoiler:
- What do you think of going for Cahill?
Bentley + Campbell I think would help the team a lot in terms of balance.
Also just thought of another one. Jordan Rhodes (for £3.72m.....the same as Campbell).
A front line of Campbell and Rhodes would beat most CB's for pace. Plus they're young and hungry for success. Get Bellamy as well (or another PL old timer striker) and they would both learn a lot from him.

TwisT we are going to stick with what Reading played last season. And that is a 4-4-2 formation. Don't wanna change too much

But 4-4-2 rarely works against teams playing 451 or 433. If you have to go 442 then play with a second striker rather that two out and outs. Surely the first priority should be a compact midfield and defence so you don't conceed easily?

Our main formation will be 4-4-2. Not saying we won't be able to change and adapt, hence why we bought in Benayoun. Gives us options.
We can't just go against the philoshopy that got Reading to the top league. Just like Swansea and Norwich last year, you are better to stick to what you know best

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
You both have a point, I think we need a team where we can switch styles and tactics and I we've got that.
Pennant, Bently or Phillips we could go for anyone of them I'd probably go with Pennant.
Strikers I don't know about Bellamy if he was to leave Liverpool I think he would go to Cardiff, Rhodes is outstanding at the lower level but don't know if he could cut it at the top I'd like us to go with a proven prem striker.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
I see Fraizer Campbell as a good shout from TwisT. I like him a lot, can score us 10 goals a season, alongside Pogrebynak.
I am happy to sign Campbell if everyone else is??
(Also if we sign Campbell we would have to release two players to get down too 25 man squad, so can you also suggest two guys we can release)

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
- Spoiler:
- Manager: Alan Curbishley
Alan Curbishley is our recommendation to be appointed manager of Reading FC. We feel that Alan has all the attributes required to lead Reading firstly to safety in his first season, and secondly to build on the foundations we intend to lay.
In his career to date he has shown that he is more than capable of steering a Premiership team away from relegation, with Charlton and then with West Ham in 2007-08. The second feat was particularly relevant to our decision as it shows he is able to come in at very short notice and imprint his style and managerial abilities on a team – coming in to West Ham with them near the foot of the table and steering them to safety with room to spare.
Additionally he is used to working with sides with relatively limited budgets, and Reading will be able to afford him a slightly healthier transfer budget than that. His transfer record is not something of concern, as we believe he has always bought sensibly and there are no high profile flops on his record.
His style of play will fit well with Reading, and with the squad we have. Whilst it isn’t tiki-taka, neither is it a long ball or particularly physical game. We have players that he will be more than able to utilise in either a 4-4-2 system or a 4-5-1, both of which are favoured formations for him.
We believe we have a squad capable of attaining safety in the Premiership and with a manager as experienced as Curbishley we are confident our minimum aim is achievable and that we can even break into the mid-table pack.
Any use?

It seems we need to get fullbacks from that. Kyle Naughton is a great buy. How about Kieran Gibbs on the left? We could play a more compact midfield, and have both of them overlapping. I think Fraizer Campbell is the striker we need. Then with the remaining money get another creative midfielder that can play across it? Thoughts on loaning Joe Cole? Bit pricey but he was loaned to Lille and I don't know if Liverpool would play him again this season. May like another loan move to a PL club.

For the LB, we have Shorey and Harte, so if we are going to get another one we would have to release one of them. And that would probably be Harte

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
- Spoiler:
- I would say release one of our strikers and get Campbell.
Then loan J. Cole and he and Yossi would provide the creative spark.
Then maybe release a few more to get more steel in our midfield?
Bentley/Cole-----Reo-----?------Yossi
---------------Campbell------------------
----------------------------Pav-------------
Something like that?
Doing more research and Michael Ballack is not signed with anyone. Someone we could bring in on a free?
Steve Sidwell is also available for £2.64m from Fulham. We could even take advantage of the Rangers situation and go for Lee McCulloch.
What first team would you put out right now? Put question marks over places you feel we should strengthen. I have put players in bold that we could sign. Mine would be
-------------------------------------Federici-------------------
Naughton--------------------?------------------?-----------Shorey
Yossi----------------Reo-Coker----Sidwell/Ballack-------McAnuff
---------------Cole/Campell---------------------------------
---------------------------------Pav------------------------------------
From the post that Viva got, he seems to think that the CB's were good last season. Can't argue with that, as the poster seems to be in the know.
That is my very rough thinking at the mo. I don't think changing the side too much will help things in the long run. I think Campbell would be a good buy, and Cole a good loan move.
Just thinking out loud at the moment........

I could see us needing another CB and LB. But I think Up front and on the wings we are fine. GK is good, CM maybe need another player in there.
Definately gonna keep 4-4-2 as our starting formation, but could always bring in Yossi to make it a 4-4-1-1.

Bull makes a very good point
- Spoiler:
- So Sidwell/McCulloch? Would Ballack join on a free (maybe not). Mark Davies is a good player at Bolton.....would you want to come back up to the top flight?
CB and LB. I think with Debuchey going to NUFC, we could have gone for Danny Simpson. Ryan Taylor might be our LB for the same reason, if NUFC are looking to get rid of an extra defender. CB.......again we could take advantage of the situation at Rangers and go for Carlos Bocanegra (he is CB that also covers at LB). We could go for Zat Knight as well as he is worth sweet FA.
Taking advantage of the Bolton situation again......if Reading are used to playing with pacy wingers then Bentley would not fit as well. However, how about Chris Eagles? He would be worth a little bit more, but is a very hard working and pacy winger.
I think....go for Campbell for defo. Then it is what you guys think about getting my following suggestions:
Ryan Taylor
Carlos Bocanegra
Zat Knight
Steve Sidwell
Lee McCulloch
Chris Eagles
I would have Bocanegra, Taylor, McCulloch, Eagles.

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Well we don't want too much upheaval TwisT. And on the wing we have Matty Phillips and Jimmy Kebe who are two very good wingers.
CB I like to idea of Bocanegra from Rangers for free. Think he is a good player. And Ryan Taylor LB could be a good signing. Offers set pieces as well. CM wise I think McCulloch on a free you can't go wrong.
So I would take McCulloch, Bocanegra and Taylor. But that would take us up to a squad size of 30 I believe. So we would have to release five players.

Right I have updated the OP with the signing of Fraizer Campbell for £3.8M (Don't want £3.72M because I hate having the stupid .02M)
We are know at 27 players in the squad. 3 GK's, 9 defenders, 10 Midfielders and 5 strikers

I was thinking. It would be good to save some money for the January transfer window. As a possible/likely team facing relegation, it would be helpful to keep some in reserve at that point.
It gives Alan the chance to spend then if we either need goals or need to stop conceding. Obviously we don't know at what shape the team would be in, but it shows forward thinking. That, I think, is important in this task

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Right I have taken the decision to sign McCulloch and Bocanegra (on free transfers) from the Newco Rangers. And Ryan Taylor for £4.8M. This will get our squad up to 30 players.
And I have chosen 5 players we can release:
Ian Harte - Not needed have two better LB's in Shorey and Taylor.
Shaun Cummings - Not needed - Have better defenders
Jay Tabb - Not needed - Not gonna see any first XI footie, didnt in the Championship.
Mikele Leigertwood - Not needed - Feel we have 4 better CM's
Garath McCleary - Not needed - Feel Benayoun can cover the wingers, so he is a bit surplus to requirements.
Now are we all happy with that???? I need answers ASAP, because I want to use tomorrow getting together our presentation for Tuesday, and for finalising any other little things

Well releasing them would give us cash (transfer and less wages). What's the point of keeping them, for the reasons you have stated above? Less wages, which gives us more money (for wages) for those coming in.

Cummings does have value on TM Sell fees listed below:
Ian Harte - Sell fee would be £180k
Shaun Cummings - Sell fee would be £520k
Jay Tabb - Sell fee would be £700k
Garath McCleary- Sell fee would be £700k
So that totals to £2.1m
Mikele Leigertwood might actually be a good one to keep as he is CDM/CB back up. However his sell fee would be £880k
If we sold him as well, that would be £2.98m in total

Mikele Leigertwood might actually be a good one to keep as he is CDM/CB back up. However his sell fee would be £880k
If we sold him as well, that would be £2.98m in total

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Cheers TwisT. I agree on Leigertwood, however I feel the CM's and CB's we have are better than him, and we need to squad space. I will release them and get our final 25 man squad together.

That is our final 25 man squad. Are we all ok with that?? I think we have assembled a good bunch of players there.
We have 4.48M left for January Transfers etc.
Now we need to focus on getting a presentation together for Tuesday. I will need someone (maybe two people) to justify our signings. Just needs to be a sentence or two. I will focus on getting the main bits done, and put all of it together

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
I think that squad has a nice mix to it in youth and experience.

Glad Leigertwood was kept - I rate him and think he has a place in our squad.
I can help out with words here and there for players if you need

Morning
Bad news, I've got work experience kid with me for this week and I won't be able to get on during much during work hours. I'll try in the evening.

That is fine Viva. I am off for this morning, but should be here most of the afternoon.
Soddy and TwisT I will set you the task of writing justifications for players. Like I said earlier, just have to be a sentence or two.
GK - Marcus Hahnemann - Free transfer
RB - Kyle Naughton - £4.2M - (TM Value of £3.5M)
CB - Adrian Mariappa - £2.2M - (TM Value of £1.8M)
RM - Matt Phillips - £2.7M - (TM Value of £2.2M)
CM - Nigel Reo Coker - Free transfer
CAM - Yossi Benayoun - Loan for 800K
ST - Fraizer Campbell - £3.8M (TM Value of £3.1M)
CB - Carlos Bocenagra - Free transfer
CM - Lee McCulloch - Free transfer
LB - Ryan Taylor - £4.8M (TM Value of £4M)
Sodhat if you take the first 5, and TwisT you take the second 5?

Also can I get an opinion on what your final starting XI would be in the 4-4-2 formation?

Re: The Read Hot Chilli Peppers
Will do the first 5 as requested, sir. But a bit later, I've already done a WWA show this morning!
