The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

When Stephen Roche won the TdF in 1987, he also won the Giro d'Italia AND the World Championship road race. This is the "Triple Crown" of professional cycling. How many of the Irish people on here knew that he had won this? Did you also know that he is only one of two people ever to have won the Triple Crown.
My brother was a cycling fanatic when i grew up, so yes i did actually know this.

Cork Hurlers didn't even get a free meal after training and had no travelling doctor with them when they won a couple of All-Ireland a few years ago.
Billy, amateur sportsmen going on strike is like something they'd dream up in Father Ted. (though in fairness, they were treated very badly and then they lost the run of themselves).

right folks, I'm out of here for a fwe hours. Just had the most AMAZING email - a list of about 100 books available FREE.
Now I could try and resist temptation or I could just go and check out which ones I want.
Bye for now
PS I was checking out Annalise Murphy's Olympics FB page. Her last post was
No more routine for Annalise! Time to head to London and enjoy the rest of the games!

Cork hurlers did a great thing for the game when they first striked second time, lost the run a bit, things are alot better but until about 20 years down thel ine when Frank and his cronies are gone things won't change. Most get cars or minimum petrol costs, and a fair few have cushy jobs due to it.

Any kiwis out there have news on what's happening at the volcano eruption at Tongariro - did the Tongariro crossing as part of a trekking trip to NZ a few years ago and it was bleedin awesome. Presume all the ash must be having an impact of the ski resorts in the area and at the height of the SH ski season too
On the Olympics, Katie and John Joe highlights so far for us micks. Did a total left field bet - a treble on Nevin, Conlon and Barnes all winning golds. Not a hope, I know, but we can dream of getting 2,500 euro back for a 10 euro bet. No point betting on Katie, she's 1-20 to win her semifinal; and 1-6 to win the gold
Did anybody see the end of the 3000m steeplechase when the Kenyan winner and the French runner-up swapped singlets, then the French lad lifted the Kenyan up almost to his shoulders with a huge smile on his face. Really great sportsmanship. Fact that the Kenyan lad was about a foot shorter and 20 kilos lighter than the French lad helped, I'm sure, but it made great viewing.
Oh, and to go a bit non-PC, hottie of the games has to be that Dutch swimmer with the unpronrounceable name ending in ...jojo who woin the 50k and 100k freestyles. Any other suggestions for hottie of the games?

There's a whole thread dedicated to that, for men and women: https://www.606v2.com/t32859-hotties-of-the-xxx-olympiad
Although, Alex Morgan of the Us Women's soccer team probably tops my list. Some great games in that competition too, I think women's soccer at interantional level at least is more entertaining than the mens. Or own Katie is quite good looking too!

Cork has the population though:
Kilkenny: 95K
Kerry: 145K
Tipp: 159K
Cork: 481K
Dublin: 1.2m
Might I add that Tipperary are not too far behind Cork in hurling and also has the most successful racing stables in the world (Ballydoyle).
Just because Irish people don't win loads of medals in the Olympics doesn't mean that we're not sporty. It just happens that the sports that we are best at are not catered for in the Olympics and as I've pointed out on another thread, the amateur GAA players have no problem heading off to Australia and beating the pro players down there and have been doing it for a long time and not to mention that Dermot Weld won the Melbourne Gold Cup x 2 times - never done by a NH trainer before (and as far as I know, not since).

Cork is above 500k now I believe, the population is a main reason in our success but both codes have a kind of line. Anywhere west of Bandon and you will struggle to find decent hurlers. Go east and aroudn the city/suburbs and there will be some good hurlers.

All the steam (mostly) is heading ESE across the North Island. Seems to be simmering down now.
Can't believe the US-Oz Water Polo semi - almost identical to 2000 when Oz levelled it up in the last 1.3 secs. This time they got a 5m penalty - in the last second! - to make it 9-9. Extra time.

Tipp are at a huge disadvantage from the distance needed to be travelled perspective (training is in Thurles). If amateur hurlers can travel those distances to go to training after a day's work, the Munster players should be able to do the same.

True story, when we were driving in the Northern Territory, i asked for directions to a place to some chap in a villiage. He said in a broad Aussie accent, 'Mate, there is a road in and a road out of here, keep followin this road for about aaawwww 6 stubbies and bobs yer uncle and fanny's yer Ant'
Still makes me chuckle to this day

Morning all. Having a great time in Calgary (again). Work hard, play hard. Replicated the Alan Partridge scene the other day, running round as a zombie with my shower cap and curtain on.

A round trip of 70/80 miles after a day's work and training a couple of times a week is hard going and they certainly couldn't do for instance what Dublin were doing and that was meeting to train at 6 in the morning before going to work. Apart from the fact that Tipperary is pretty much a rural area and lots of them would be living in places outside the county. The previous management of Tipperary packed it in because it was far too demanding with work and travel distances. Some of the trainers were travelling to and from Galway to Thurles a couple of nights a week.
PS - I spent a couple of days on a train crossing from the west to east coast of Aus!

Indian Pacific... hell of a long journey.
Are there good roads around Tipp? Or more secondary roads? 70 miles is a fair way but it's like a commute from the Gong or the Central Coast to the city. Lots of people do it but it is a long day indeed.

As if Aus didn't have enough athletes of their own, they tried to steal Sonia O'Sullivan from us! Typical crims!

Mainly secondary roads. When you factor in having a job as well, its not so easy.
The worst couple of days I've ever spent on that train. After a short stop in Kalgoorlie, the only moving object for about 20 hours to be seen was one person with corks in hat (a mail stop in the middle of nowhere) and a herd of wild horses. I thought the journey would never end.

I hope you were in 1st Class.
Still, way too long for a train journey. It's like another planet out there. That's why it was deemed suitable for the Brits to detonate atomic bombs... and the Japanese now use parts of it for their rocket launches into space.

No, I wasn't in first class (don't think there was a first class!). It would have been cheaper to fly - but I just did it for the experience anyway.
I've been up around Ayrs Rock as well, much more hospitable landscape than Western Australia (though the coast is pretty good in Western Aus).

That's part of our appeal I guess...
They give the impression here that the underdog rules but in realty that's a big con. It's a strange sort of balance really and very hard to shake off the minds of the masses - but it's self-perpetuating and sometimes fascinating for tourists.
Gold for Meares... but boy she has a huuuuge arse though. Incredible.

I am doing work experience right now to try and get into a working routine before my apprenticeship starts (and because the Job Seekers people are making me do it). Can't say I am enjoying it too much, feels like a bit of a waste of time at this point. Can't wait until I get my starting date for Wrightbus.
Also, Jim Neilly (Ulster commentator) was commentating the Weightlifting yesterday, and he is getting some stick from Weightlifting fans! Not sure how he can be expected to get foreign names right when he mixes up the players here he sees every friday.
The best part was when he cheered and said "He has won the gold medal!" when there was another guy to lift.

Congrats Rory on the job (I thought you were still in school!).
Check out the RTE player for "Creedon's Cork" (Mon 6 aug) they do a bit (towards the end) on Rory Gallagher. Also some stuff on George Best's time in Cork.

Evening, and congrats to Meares Lb
Anyone who can beat VP in that velodrome sure has earned their medal.
And I hope the Irish boxers can bring some cheer to the Emerald Isle. It was certainly 'gloomy' reading earlier.
Money does make a difference. Be it lottery money, state funding (for some countries, like China) and sponsorship can allow an athlete to train professionally. Makes a helluva difference

Only when it's been led to water first Glas
Gutsy run by Dai Greene last night, given the lack of preparation he had.
Bronze for Grabarz in the high jump.

Evening pub
Looks like my temporary assignment is going to last rather longer than I thought! A few days has become a few weeks, a further 3 weeks minimum and it could be more. I'm and I'm off out for drinks with the ladies and gents from my previous placement tomorrow night. Really looking forward to seeing them all again
One side effect of the Olympics is my sister is now looking for a gymnastics club for my niece! Isobelle may only be 3 but she's been inspired!

Katie Taylor would be the strong favourite for Gold in the Women's Hound, but anything can happen. The other three lads are decent chances. A gold in the Men's would be awesome but any kind of medal at all would be good.
We need a couple of medals for Belfast! Coleraine has three medals and Belfast none... will be cheering on Barnes and Conlon.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, I've only had a quick skim read back, but I am duty bound to mention this! Just in case people are unaware of the might of the kingdom of Yorkshire
