The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

They're talking about Phelps being the greatest Olympian of all time because he has the most medals of any athlete. Does anyone else think this a little unfair given the fact in swimming, it much easier to compete across a range of disciplines than any other?

I think he's a contender but actually selecting one person as the greatest Olympian is a futile and meaningless task. Fun to discuss though

Morning Glas, As & Kado,
But it's South Wales we really have to worry about. Have you seen their hog-tossing team? How does one compete with that?
Raining medals for Ireland now... great to see.

Yeah I think a medal is not equal to a medal. You can't really compare sports. Mo Farrahs one is more impressive than some other peoples 5 if you catch my drift. Some sports don't give you the opportunity to win more than multple medals whereas there seems to be a neverending list of swimming, rowing and cycling events. Team events vs individual events is also an unfair comparison.
That said 18 gold medals is simply staggering. Compare him to other swimmers and there's no one even close on the medal list which suggest Phelps is very far above the norm. In the context of medals he has about the same (or more) than Chris Hoy, Steve Redgrave and Bradley Wiggins put together.
What Phelps has achieved is pretty mindblowing. I'd say hes a good shout for the greatest.

And it's just so unnecessary, as well as being unfunny. And then the editors say no offence was intended. Er, how did they expect it to be received?
But then, I suppose the North Korean people won't get to read it anyway.

Rodders (and Munsty), there's a thread discussing who's the 'greatest' Olympian:
https://www.606v2.com/t33075-who-is-your-greatest-olympian
I agree with you both, I don't like this simple equating of medal tally to greatness. The number of medals indicates success, but success and greatness aren't the same thing.

I think for me, the Olympics has become to signify being more than just about success in events. Even though I never saw him, Jesse Owens will always be the greatest Olympian given the circumstances and what he did it against.

Lucky, I can just imagine a couple of ignorant idiots in the 'newspaper' office asking: "which one is North Korean again?" and some clever person saying "ummm KOR is the nice one and DPRK is the.... naughty one". (chuckle) That's as far as it should have gone.

It's also the fact they called the DPRK 'Naughty Korea'. That actually makes light of how tough life is the people of North Korea.

I read the other day that they are appealing for food assistance from the west. If you've ever been there (or on the border) there is this overwhelming sense of depression when you look into the distance. Seoul is another world away it seems. The 'haves' and the 'have nots'.
So what's on this morning... kayaking, sailing and some boxing?

Watching it now and having a read of the "elitist sports" thread.
https://www.606v2.com/t33365-sports-which-are-just-too-posh-rich-and-over-represented-at-the-olympics
Some interesting points there. Access for everyone and anyone to some of those once elitist sports is now getting a lot easier... for a few lucky ones.

Many people who row, for example, won't do it until University. Such is the nature of the sport that this does not really affect their chances of making the Olympics, several medal winners this Games had only learned to row a few years ago. There are also several reach-out rowing programmes in London alone and being a member of a rowing club is no more expensive than most football clubs (It's expensive for the clubs though!) and the elitism of the sport is grossly misrepresented, hence Trenton Oldfield tragically narrowing avoiding death in a stupid, selfish, hypocritical publicity stunt masquerading as protest

Cracking stuff from Katie. The guys in the RTE studio were a little more shrewd with the superlatives from today's match compared to how they were after the quarter. If she wins gold though, I can't see any holding back.
The scenes in Bray were fantastic.
