The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

I was watching on the Beeb, Munsty. They are very complimentary of her skill. Found a link to this video of two of Ireland's boxing medllists

I'm glad they are showing it. She is an incredibly athlete and one to be really damn proud of. Funny to think that Ireland, of all nations, is rallying around a female boxer.

Agreed lucky. Perennial under achievers ranked 3rd.
It's enough to make a cat laugh.
Afternoon all. En route to Exe yet again. Talking of which, I saw that Sean Holley has referred to the as "unknown tough nuts" in his HC prediction article in TRP

A medal in showjumping, from the fella who was stripped of his medal 12 years ago. Urgh, that’s not good.

What does one dope horses with? The only horse drug I know is Ket, and that's unlikely to make them go much faster!

No idea CJ, think it was given something to make it "hypersensitve" or some such, not sure what that means exactly. Pretty embarrassing stuff for the nation anyway.

There have been methods for making horses jump higher for years. In the past they used to "rap" them. You would have two people standing beside the jump during training; as the horse leapt over it they would lift the top bar and rap the horse's knees with it thus encouraging him to go higher. I remember a huge amount of fuss when one of the GB's more famous riders was caught doing this - a guy who had a reputation for being a really nice guy who thought the world of his horses etc etc.
Nowadays they use capsicum. I think they rub it on the horse's forelegs; I don't think they feed it to them! Capsicum is the element of peppers which makes the hot. It makes the horse's legs sensitive. Obviously this can be tested for - simply rub your hands over the horse's legs and if they flinch ... game over.

Hmm. Mean to the poor horsies.
Also, why are jumping etc in the Olympics but flat out horse racing isn't?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
No idea, CJ. But I think it is a nonsense to have this in the Olympics because it isn't a real test of a riders ability. Also as probably most of the horses are gelded there can be very little value in having a horse as an Olympic medallist. They should do what they do in the modern pentathlon. IN that you are assigned a horse to ride - a good rider will get the horse to go well and therefore a real test of horsemanship.
Mind you if there were horse-racing, probably with Aidan O'Brien's current status as the best trainer in the world, should be a very decent chance of a gold for Ireland!!

Finally at a place with a decent signal
CJ - there's always been dodgy stuff with horses, especially racing. I'm not a gambler, and glad of it. The tales of cheating my gambling friends relate amount to fraud.

Don't be soft Mick, take the medal. You think Chris Hoy is beating men ten years his junior on weetabix and Bolt runs 9.65 on mcchicken nuggets?
Justin Gatland has been caught doping 3 or 4 times for flip sake yet now he's 'clean' he can run a PB and get a bronze medal?
A medal is a medal.... showjumping is a bit off a rubbish one though....

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
It's not just a case of "take the medal" Rodders and Mick. The horse industry is very important to the Irish economy. The Olym[pics is a way of showing off what Ireland can do in terms of breeding horses. Of the countries which sent riders to the games in the various equestrian competitions I think it was somethinmg like 16 of them had some Irish bred horses going for them. The Minister of State for the horse industry (no idea who he is) was apparently at this competition today.
In terms of money and employment it is a major industry.
And talking of doping, don't I remember that the great Carl Lewis was caught in his early career? As Rodders says - most of them are at it. This is why the B samples will be kept for 8 years. The dopers are usually ahead of the game, but by keeping the samples that long when new tests come up they can have another go at testing ...

I read this a similar way. Also Rodders are you saying Bolt and Hoy are on drugs?

I'm saying that this guy isn't the first person to win a medal, in this games or any other, that has skeletons in the closet. Just be happy to get another medal. He hasn't been caught for anything in this instance so his medal is as valid as any other.

I agree on that point. I think people should be given a second chance. The way you wrote it after though insinuated you thought Hoy and Bolt won because of drugs.

Look until someone is caught then they are clean. There's always plenty of circumstancial and anecdotal evidence to suggest many top athletes are using PEDs. People can believe what they want.
The only thing I am 100% certain of is that Bolt and Hoy are amazing athletes and competitors and they deserve all the success they get.
Anyways enough of unfounded allegations... good luck to Paddy Barnes tonight .

Evening All
Not watching the olympics again I'm afraid.
Wouldn't it be great if circumstances would allow you to walk right up to someone and tell them what you think of them - even if it's something lovely?

Epic comeback for the brazilians in the womens beach volleyball. My god what a sport.
Munsty on the the bling note, I believe one of the long distance runners said when asked recently that the movement of their bling helped their rhythm.

I'd like to say it to randomers more as well or even just people I know slightly. I think the fear for me is that if it's a girl, they think you're hitting on them or if it's a guy, they think you are incredibly weird.
But if you take out how it makes you feel, what you say may just make a massive difference even if it isn't something you see yourself.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Watched Katie in time warp as I want to see that new film "Ted" some laughs overall only average, like Family guy these days. Kaite was her usual best, I think she is a superb boxers but what her best asset seems to be (I don't know much about boxing) is her ability to tick the scoreboard over, she isn't too flashy but picks her moments and her lethal combinations lead her to picking up one and two points. A superb soccer player too, played for Ireland saw her in the Cross one year. She scored a superb goal from about 40 yards out another stage too but she hasn't played for them in a good few years.
As I was saying to Micko on Twitter, I have mixed feelings on O'Connor, I don't know if he should have been allowed compete again given what happened, he didn't make the final originally either too so he was lucky to get a medal too. Congrats too him but I feel a bit uneasy over the whole
thing.

Thanks,

Paddy Barnes gets his medal, at least a bronze. Second Irish Olympian to win back to back medals. Keep her lit Paddy, superb second round and picked up some points after getting a barrage from the Indian fighter.
Well done Paddy, and keep it up lads and lassies!!!!!!

Hoping that Paddy Barnes or Michael Conlon can win GOLD- it's a long shot, but we need to stick it to Coleraine. Blydi Coleraine, with their rowing... We need a Belfast athlete to pick up a Gold. Spin on that Coleraine!
