The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

Cheers Breaker, just looked on the Fox Sports website last night. It seems like Tigers have knocked the Dragons out of finals contention. Finally Wests are starting to play well again.
Thomond,
For when you come in, I know you'd be interested somewhat. I watched PSG v Lorient last night as I was fascinated to see this Parisian revolution going on. It was 2-2 in one of the better matches I have seen for quite a long time. PSG really need Thiago Silva to come back soon but attacking wise, they are going to be very exciting to watch all season long. Ibrahimovic and Lavezzi could be one of the most dangerous strike partnerships in Europe soon enough.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
I just wrote a little piece on the Final Day Olympic thread:
These have been a truly fantastic Olympic Games.
Just a word of warning from my own experience at Sydney 2000.
The final day will quickly peter out and final medal tallies counted then the Closing Ceremony will begin. That is when it really hits you (Londoners especially) and you'll feel so proud of what has been achieved and the way it has been run. There have been so many memorable moments.
Then as the Brazilians do their little piece and the flame is extinguished - you might feel very emotional about it all. Don't worry... just keep smiling.
Also, in the coming days and weeks ahead you might hear a few cynics start to say things like "what has it done for me?"... "the economy is still touch & go" and "well, that was money well spent!" (sarcastically).
Just ignore them and keep your chin up. In the years to come, I'm sure most of you (hosts) will have the very best memories of these wonderful Games and you should all feel very proud you were all a part of it.

Morning All
Breaker - there's still the paralympics to look forward to, so I don't think people will be too down-in-the-mouth about it all just yet. Apparently the paras have sold out, so people are still enjoying the olympics. I don't think there'll be so much negativity about the event now - all that's been put to bed as this fornight has gone on. However, more criticism is coming out about government cuts to sports facilities and the state of sports education. I think Cameron and Clegg will be getting a fair bit of stick after all this is over for that. Depends on which sources you look at I guess.

Of course Cari but unfortunately interest does drop off significantly after tonight. It's just the way things are - no discredit to the Paralympic athletes.
We had some funny moments designing the Sydney Olympic Athlete's Village... you know Oly, Para, post-Oly modes. Really had to think outside the circle. (it looks great though after 12 years... I was there the other day. However, that's another story in itself)
I couldn't really care less about the pollies - it's not really about them. Things happens after every big world event anyway.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Breaker - sure the interest will drop - there'll be a bit of a lull after such a big event. It doesn't help that the BBC aren't covering the paralympics for some reason, it's been relegated to Channel 4 - and that's in the host country, I've no idea what coverage will be like in other countries. No doubt there'll be political arguements after all this is over. They were arguing over what to do with the olympic stadium afterwards months ago already.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
That's the other thing - I'd have liked to see them keep it as it is. It's such as great stadium. Lop off the top tier and all of a sudden it will look tiny. Is West Ham going to use it? If so, it would be good if they kept it as is. People will talk about the legacy of these games and to me (I'm biased) I'd like to see most of those venues remain. I understand you can't keep the beach volleyball courts and a few other venues for obvious reasons.
We had the same situation happen here - the Olympic Stadium was reduced from 110k down to 83k now. Not that we would have filled it for most games but we definitely would fill it for ABs, Lions, NRL GFs, etc. Alas, it was also designed to be deconstructed like the Stratford one.

John Joe walked into the ring, smiling and laughing I knew he had lost it at that stage.
It's as poor as I have seen Nevin box, seemed to get the tactics wrong and his feinting and head movement was lax, believe he is better than the guy too (think he beats him 9 times out of 10) which is an awful shame. Campbell boxed well but Nevin was poor by his standards. Disappointing but it happens. He can still be proud of his performance at the games just gutting that he was poor when it mattered most.
Munsty, did you see Brazil yesterday? Silva looked dodgy as feic from the bits I saw as did their whole defence. I despise Ibra, he is very overrated but can produce some bits of magic.
It has really been a stunning Olympics, you always think you won't get caught up in it but you do. Going to be shoite in 4 years though, events will be on at like 1/2 am or even later. NBC style, holding back events may be the way to go.

I like the Paralympics Ireland win a fair few medals in it often and inspiring to see how people react to the traumas they go through. The adverts they have done for it are great although I would prefer to see it get more attention on BBC as opposed to C4.

This is quite an exciting final. Brazil are bossing it, so as it stands it'll be Brazil with gold and Russia with the silver.

I like it when you have to get up early for major events or stay up late. Somehow it makes it all that much more special. Just me maybe but I love it.
Ibrahimovic frustrates me but that is because he could be up there in the top 5 or 10 players in the world. He's strong in the air, has two strong feet and his touch is sensational for a man his size.

It's not always a bad thing Munsty and as an NFL fan I'm used to the long nights, summer months could be alright for it though.
Ibra is frustrating, has talent but is very over-hyped in my view doesn't produce consistently at all. When Sweden needed him against England he was found wanting.
Cork lost deservedly, poor tactics cost us badly but a young side still rebuilding. Basketball on now, don't care what people say I like Timmy McCarthy going back to Beijing. In between some of the crazy calls for points, he is a decent commentator I think. Loves his sport and is well informed on it, just gets a bit excited. Not a bad thing just very American really Just don't tell Stag's brother that.

T,
You'll understand the reference but when I see Ibra, I imagine NFL scouts looking at him and salivating over his skill levels and physical dimensions. Talking about his personality issues but saying his upside outweighs the dangers.

I can't understand why their PR men don't tell them to say:
"I'm delighted at the success of course, but it really isn't my place to try and muscle in to take the credit..."

Excellent post. Its true. I have been watching the Olympics since 1972. This one was up there with the very best, for so many reasons. You could almost feel the warmth. Feel the positive buzz. No negative vibes. Everyone involved in it, played their part - specially the punters. Well done London. Well done Britain & Northern Ireland. Be very proud. It was superb.

Love it Notch. That just reinforces how I saw this Olympics. It was so inclusive. The Organising bods really helped enable it. Hats off.
BTW. I want to do Denise Williams lipstick for TV. I'd pay like. Ja. Jeezuz she's just gorgeous. As well as being World Class like.
Look. I know I'm Irish so don't attack me on this one roysh.
But my fav moment of this whole gig? The one that touched me most?
This one. She's just... A female Sugar Ray. Sublime boxer and just a gorgeous lady. Her Mum sacrificed it all for her. And she realised her dream. Adds to it.
Nicola Adams. She defined this Gig for me. Asthma, adversity to wimmins boxing, illness. She believed.

Think I said on here before, my fav moment was the was Phelps conducted himself when Chad le Clos won the swimming, such a nice gentleman and how he was emotional to get the gold. Also his dad as well!!!! The german shot putter doing the hurdles and also Feliz Sanchez when he won---pure emotion there!!

Great photo imagine trying to do something like that 20 years ago? Would have been nigh impossible, our nation/island has come along way baby, great to see. Now only if we had some money to give this Olympics lark a right go....
Wrote this on the Olympics thread an I'm just going to copy it.
Seriously though, you lot have seen me cheer GB guys and cheer against them (only Murray and Campbell, one as he was fighting an Irish guy so that's understandable!) I'm incredibly happy for GB, a superb bunch of athletes and you lot are even half decent as people (note: I said half Whistle )
An superb performance at your home games and it will hopefully leave a legacy for the people of Britain and England. In certain sports which are minority, there are top class arena for teams to play in and that is truly a marvelous thing, it is the biggest legacy of the games.
A great games lads proud of GB and you have a lot to be proud of from performances, conduct at the games and the legacy which follows.

I must admit and I think quite a few people will agree with me......3 weeks ago I was fed up, had enough of olympic talk and money talk and traffic talk and just couldn't be bothered with it............now, London 2012 had me hooked, I couldn't get enough olympics even though the coverage was questionable at times I am so so so gutted I didn't go in for tickets but to see the atmosphere and stand in Cardiff watching a big screen was incredible...........Rio: you have a lot to do, having rugby there will help though

The red button channels were unreal, the coverage on the main channels was pretty biased, but that's not a problem enjoyed the extra ones hoping they're there for Rio!

I really enjoyed watching the sports I'd never normally watch like water polo and handball!!
Let's hope this closing ceremony is just as good!!

I wasn't as a big a fan as others of the opening ceremony (got a right bollicking on here and on the olympic section) but it was indeed impressive. Spice Girls and One Direction though, a shoite end to a great Olympics.........
Our boxing captain is carrying the flag he didn't grab one but did a great job as skipper I'd say. 4 medals.

Still, those 2 are enough to make me turn it off. Unless there are some Brazilian acts....

I told you they were on the way, will interest the females. I think one's Irish. An Irishman on a podium in the Athletics track. About freaking time!
