The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the heart of the Olympic Precinct at Stratford, where we can watch the world's greatest athletes do their thing and strut their stuff during the best Modern Olympics Games ever.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896 - and let's hope it stays that way.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Jessica Ennis, Kieran Behan, Oscar Pistorius, Bradley Wiggins, Leryn Franco, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Pendleton, Aaron Cruden, Katie Taylor, Misty May, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Krisztián Berki (on that horsey thingy) and the the Winner of the Gold Medal at Wimbledon - Andy Murray.

Incredible last lap from all the athletes vying for the gold. What a race!
The reception every athlete got before the race was great too.

Olympic update: The Nevins have taken Gold, SIlver, Bronze, Copper and Lead...
from the Olympic Stadium.
Michael Johnson just shines. Denise and that Welsh gay guy, are just lost without him.

Speaking of SPOTY - Wiggins v Farah. Am I the only person who is not impressed by wiggins winning the TdF? Had Team GB produced some form and tactical nous for Cav to win the Road Race I would join the chorus of applause for Wiggins. But, they showed in the Olympic road race that without radio contact from their Directeur Sportif they have not got it in the top two inches. They totally fouled upon the road race and lost it for Cav. So for me, Wiggins should not be even spoken of for the Beeb SPOTY award.

In terms of the first sentence, quite possibly. He still won the TdF. Many, myself including, would count even a "weak" Tour as harder to win than an Olympic Gold. Also he fulfilled his role in Brailsford's IMO completely correct tactics in the road race perfectly. Knackered himself doing it actually and then won his TT with ease. There's been no British TdF winner ever. It is a 3 week 3500 km gruelling journey across mountains and everyone has won it with the help of a team. It is still individually the greatest achievement by a British sports person this year. And he actually has a personality too. I've no problem
With Mo or Jess winning it but Brad has to be favourite for me

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, Stratford
Good post CJ but no british male has done an Olympic athletics double (I think). It is very rare to do the 5k and 10k double and that 5k field was incredibly strong.
I'm not a cycling or a distance running expert but I'd say Mo clinches it. What he has achieved is sensational.

I think the BBCSPOTY is a load of nonsence anyways so don't really care if truth be told.
Wiggins would be deserved winner but what Mo has achieved tonight is pretty incredible. It's been a special year for British (and Leinster) sports fans ....
The rest of us can only live vicariously at your expense....

I have never said it was a "weak" TdF, CJ. And I have nothing but respect for the men who take part - wherever they finish. I think it is a tremendous achievement and requires real guts and superb physical fitness. So I am not dissing on Wiggins for winning a "weak" TdF nor am I in any way suggesting that what Wiggins achieved shoudl be minimised. But ...
I have been watching the TdF seriously for a few years now. Before I had access to watching it on Eurosport I used to follow it in the papers or online, which wasn't quite the same thing. I agreed early in this year's race with RugbyDreamer that Sky controlled a particular stage extraordinarily well. However, you say that every winner of the TdF have a team around them. True, but it seemed to me that this year the Sky back-room team (as opposed to the guys on the bikes) controlled the race almost like a video game and as a result it was pretty damn boring for spectators. Afficionados of road cycling have commented that it was like when Lance Armstrong came over with his American Post team and destroyed the field in a similar manner.
However if you go back to previous years, you saw Yellow Jerseys attacking the field, looking to make time in the mountains, setting themselves up to compete in the sprint. We saw none of that from Wiggins. He maintained the same high tempo, programmed to follow his powermeter on his bike, always seemed to know just how much he had to do to retain the Maillot Jaune and never offered anyhting elase to the race. I also said it was the cycling equivalent of up-the-jumper rugby - great if it's your team that is winning that way, but excruciating for the neutral supporter which in this year's TdF I was.

I know you didn't KiaRose, but others have done...
I disagree, he lead the tour from the start and lead out pretty much all of his team to attempt stage wins
But I can see where you are coming from

A word for the forgotten man...Carl Froch. His performance against Bute was as good a performance as I've seen from a British boxer. Woefully underappreciated is Froch. Proper old school. Doesn't fight handpicked bums like a lot of british fighters.

What I found amazing after the Tour de France was how my cycling experts popped up everywhere.

Munsty a week ago I was saying it was a disappointing Olympics for Ireland. I was wrong. 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze is an excellent return. Could be better and things to improve on but plenty to celebrate.
Add the 3 medals from the Coleraine rowers and its even better .

Friday night Munsty. 23-6. It was a class performance from Manly but the Bunnies will regroup. They are the real deal this year I believe.
The Broncos are teetering on the brink. They have lost their last 4 matches. They blew a good lead today but got overrun by the Bulldogs.
