The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Liverpool in honour of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, who may finally receive justice.
We are also mourning the sudden loss of Nevin Spence, his father Noel and brother Graeme, who died tragically at their farm in Hillsborough, Co. Down yesterday.
We offer our thoughts and deepest sympathies to his sisters Emma (who remains in a stable condition in hospital), Laura, their mother Essie, family and all friends and fans of the Ulster Rugby community.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Andy Murray, Craig Newby and Delme Thomas.

Good night all... sweet dreams (of Boris Johnson).
The start of a new day here already. Going to be a warm one but still and overcast this morning. I'm really looking forward to the big games tonight. Go the Swannies.... and (ahem) Manly.
Thanks Rava for your message of condolence on our behalf. Very well said.
I just saw the FB photos from Ravenhill. SUFTUM.

So much emotion everywhere.
Swans leading (15-8) early on in the AFL Prelim. Final at the Olympic Stadium. Good crowd there of about 65,000. Collingwood players were at the funeral of John McCarthy, so it's a very difficult time for them at the minute.
http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/national/afl-community-gathers-to-mourn-mccarthy/story-e6frfku9-1226477943109
Also, the corresponding NRL match has just kicked off at AAMI between Melbourne and Manly-Warringah.
Another bigger NRL crowd expected tomorrow night (70,000) for the battle of the south/south-west at Homebush.
On top of all the excitement, on a more serious note, there's been some rather tense times here after last Saturday. Hundreds of extra Police will be in the City to make sure there isn't a repeat. More security at the US Consulate which is on Park St, next to Hyde Park.
It was actually quite good this week with the Grand Mufti of Oz coming out and siding with the Police along with the head of the Lebanese Muslim Community who said "we agree it's a free country and people can say what they think.." and distancing himself as far as possible from the bad behaviour of the extremists.
They are advising their communities not to respond to texts asking them to go into town to vent any frustrations against the Americans. They have been warned and so far all sides have promised they won't attempt to march on Saturday... which starts in about 4 hours here.
At the same time there is talk of an anti-Muslim call going out to try and face the challenge so to speak. Weird times. Could get nasty or could be well controlled. Will have to wait for after the footy finals to see how it all pans out.

I've added some feedback on the Podcast thread. I wasn't sure to convey my thoughts privately or publically given the sensative topic so feel free to remove.
It must have been very difficult to do the podcast this week and I tip my hat to those involved. Please take my comments in the respectful manner intended .

I've just seen your comment mate and certainly no offence taken on my part. I shall confess that I had intended to do more of a biog of his career as you have done so in what you've posted, however work and family got in the way and I sat down to do the podcast having not had time to do so.
I suppose as an Ulsterman who watched them regularly, you are able to comment on his playing abilities moreso than any of us on the podcast. I hope that people listening will take the words that we used in the spirit that they were offered. I am more than happy next week if people wish, to clarify that in making the comparison with Quade Cooper I was in no way attempting to decry his abilities, merely to say that he was a young man who I felt would make the most of the talents that he had and fulfil all of his undoubted potential.

Thanks Ozzy. There's people who have followed Spences career more than me so I'm certainly no expert and can only state my own view. I just wanted to ensure that justice is done to both Spence the player as well as Spence the man.
I certainly don't want to spark any discussion or debate about his ability so I won't say any more on this. Thanks for your response.

Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
London Irish have brought in Munster prop Alan Cotter on a short term deal. He is the second Munster prop to go to London Irish on a short term deal this season with John Ryan having moved there two months ago. Ryan returned home from London this week and Cotter has replaced him.
Re: The Hillsborough Memorial Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Liverpool
Ryan did well in the scrum last week against Wasps, but didn't see much of him other than that. Is Cotter any good? He is on the bench tomorrow.

Ozzy Im 99% sure he has never played a senior match for Munster.
Made his British and Irish Cup debut for Munster A last season and has a few Munster A games under his belt.

No worries Rodders. Sadly I hadn't had time to do masses of research beforehand on Spence as a player either, so focused more on the loss side.
My bringing up what it's like to lose a team-mate wasn't planned, for some reason while Stag and Ozzy were talking my thoughts drifted back to the day Jonno had his heart attack.

I have just had a chance to listen to the podcast myself. Well done to the three lads for handling the tribute in a very professional manner. It would have been easy to get carried away in the emotion of it all.
With regard to his skills, I remember watching an interview with him at half-time in one of the BBC televised games just after he came into the team. He was quite happy to accept that his ball skills weren't to the same standard as some but he was working on that aspect of his game. He also recognised, in a modest way, that there were other things he brought to the team that, perhaps, weren't evident in others.

Thanks Rava, I was quite conscious of the fact that it had the potential to upset people if done in the wrong manner. Certianly wasnt going to tweet it out to Ulster or Ballynahinch.

No Pete.
I do expect him to be recalled three days into the second week of his Autumn Holidays in Greenland to fill the gap at 12 once again vacated by an under-performing Darcy even though there will be at least four young fellas imminently better prepared sitting on the sidelines.

It's a bit like gaelic football but with more goalposts, an oval ball (and oval pitch), more violence and lots of blokes in vests and really really tight shorts
