I love Phillips too. He's in a similar situation as LaRon Landry was last season. I'd like to see us give him a 1 year deal like that but this time, make sure we can lock him up long term or even be able to franchise tag him.

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
IMO Jones plays the run as well as some of the 250-260lbs DE prospects, dropping into coverage will be new to him but he's athletic enough to be effective in that role. Mike Mayock has him ranked as a 43 OLB and I actually quite like that idea, seeing him close up in LB drills would give you a better idea of whether it's feasible or not. He could play the 3rd down pass rush DE role as well.Colan (niner) wrote:definitely top ten but I think Dion Jordan has emeged as top OLB and not sure there is a fit in top five for Jones. I wouldn't be shocked if he has a great pro day and rises though. I'm caught in two minds with him, I loved watching him play in college but can't help but think he might struggle in the NFL. He might be the best OLB in the draft for a team that wants a pure pass rusher but probably not for one that uses a system where their lb's are needed in coverage and the run game more. If he ever dropped anywhere near the 20 mark as reported, I'd want the niners to trade up for him. He wouldn't start but what an option he would be in passing situations

That's interesting then. I didn't mean that he was a bad run defender, only that he was undersized for some teams but will be fun to see how he is used. I think most 3-4 teams will love him though

Kimberly Jones @KimJonesSports
NYG have signed DT Cullen Jenkins to a three-year deal for $8 million, $3 million guaranteed. Nice pickup.

Ahh ok, yeah I agree at 6'2, 245lbs he'd be undersized at 34OLB for most teams.Colan (niner) wrote:I didn't mean that he was a bad run defender, only that he was undersized for some teams but will be fun to see how he is used.

Possibly like Elvis Dumervil for the Broncos under Nolan, lined him up everywhere and just let him loose

Looks like Harvin will most likely be traded Hope we can get a 1st rounder for him, unlikely though.

Yeah with his injury history I can't see Harvin being worthy of a 1st rounder.
Huge loss for Minnesota if he does go

Apparent the Vikings have received an offer for Harvin for a 2nd round pick. 49ers, Bengals and the Dolphins all have two 2nd round picks so would be most likely bidders.Take it to the house wrote:Looks like Harvin will most likely be traded Hope we can get a 1st rounder for him, unlikely though.

Vikings trying to trade WR Percy Harvin and are in discussions with Seahawks, amongst other teams, per team sources. Seahawks favored.

Apparently the Dolphins have had talks with Jared Cook but whether they'll go after both Cook and Wallace, I don't know? Perhaps they are confident of getting an OT like Lane Johnson at #12 to replace Jake Long?

The Seahawks and Vikings have agreed to a trade that send Harvin to Seattle for draft picks, pending Harvin passing a physical

That would be a good move for Seattle. Don't know where that leaves the Vikings though? Could Jennings be a possible replacement or would they look towards the likes of Keenan Allen in the draft?Derbyblue wrote:@JayGlazer

Would have to know what sort of picks where traded to make a proper statement on the deal, but Harvin should be a good pickup for Seattle

Harvin is a good player but I'll laugh if he gets anywhere near the 10m a year he wanted. I think he is exciting but is always full of excuses and bit of a headcase so will be interesring to see how he does. I wanted him on the niners a few weels ago but after looking at the reported price, considering his issues too, I'm glad someone else took him

A team with a bomb load of cap room and willingness to spend on FA is an agents dream. Every agent will want to link his client with us for leverage

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
Well it leaves them without any threats at the WR position, Wallace is apparently getting a big deal from Miami so guess he's out, would Jennings want to join a Packers rival? Currently thinking somebody in FA and 1st round of the draft to give Ponder weapons. Apparently if Seahawks cut Rice they'll save $6.1million in cap space so he could return to Minnesota?mikeygnfl wrote:That would be a good move for Seattle. Apparently the basics of Harvin's new deal are nearly done.
@MikeJonesWaPo: Redskins have released DeAngelo Hall, source says.

Any trade between MINN and SEA for Percy Harvin, which still is being finalized, is expected to include Seahawks' 2013 first-round pick.

Ergh, Harvin is a good pick up for the Seagulls. Receiver was probably their weakest position so hard to argue with the move.
He has a rep as a douche, and Seattle isn't known for the strong locker room leadership that many other teams have.. Maybe that will be an issue for the Gulls

We get a first rounder which is good i suppose, especially since he wanted a huge contract! Replacing his big-play potential will be difficult though. Cordarelle(sp?) Patterson? We might now make a run at Jennings and/or Revis, hopefully both! (Trying to be very optimistic)

How exactly lol?
Way I see it is they get a playmaker which makes there offence a heck of a lot harder to defend now. That can't be good for the 49ers

Steep price to pay, but would Seattle find a player with the game changing skills Harvin has at the 23rd pick? Doubt it

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
I'd take the proven quantity everytime tho
Plus it's not as if Seattle need draft picks desperately, they can afford to make a big splash to help improve a problem area.
Would say they still need pass rush (with Clemons out) and maybe a right side OL but other than that they have a good roster

They will also overpay for a guy that has never topped 1000 yards receiving, who struggles to get healthy and who has had issues with teammates/coaches everywhere he has been. I know he is a good player but he isn't exactly high character. I'm sure like many slot guys he will make plays against the 49ers but I'm just delighted the niners didn't make the move as had been reported in the past

49ers one of the favourites for Sean Smith but will not be at 8m a year asking price. Happy if he came, yes he is inconsistent but the 49ers have the best secondary coach in the league arguably so he'd be a great addition. Loved him coming out of college and he'd give us a big cb.

So Cruz is going to be tendered, whats the deal with those? Could we use the pick we just got as compensation for Cruz if we can somehow *theoretically* agree a contract with him?

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
Redskins have released DeAngelo Hall. Bit of a shame as he was still our No 1 CB although given his now intermittently good play, his $8m cap number was too much for us with our John Mara fabricated cap penalty. Was the only sensible move we could really make to get under the cap. Still, if the cap penalty means we have to focus on finding and developing good cheap talent instead of signing over the hill junk like Cullen Jenkins as Mara's Giants have just done then that's cool with me.

If the Giants don't match an offer Cruz gets from another team you get their 1st round pick to use in this years draft.Take it to the house wrote:So Cruz is going to be tendered, whats the deal with those? Apparently DeAngelo Hall was one of the 2 CBs to give up over a 1,000 yards last season.

Yeah, along with the rest of the secondary, he had a rough start to the season which is when the bulk of those yards were given up. Post-bye though, he was very good. Overall though, he doesn't justify anything like what he was due this year. No-one will pay him close to that kind of money.

ANQUAN BOLDIN TO NINERS, YES!
Delighted, and for only a 6th rounder too. Imagine the YAC with him and Crabtree! The deal will be redone as well of course. Reported by everyone so check it out

Good deal for the 49ers that I must say! Although Boldin really came alive late/post season, if they get that Boldin they have got themselves a steal
Surely he is worth more than a 6th rounder to Baltimore?

They were going to cut him anyway so better than nothing I guess.
Interesting for us, I thought Jenkins was drafted to be our slot guy, Boldin definitely fits that role in 3WR sets. Boldin is an excellent blocker too, could be a great help on our option plays

Boldin, Jenkins, Crabtree and a draft pick is solid. Add to that Williams and Manningham coming back and I like it. Once again, Baalke doesn't make the flashy move but he has built through the draft and he seems to pick his fa's well
