got to say thats a steal for the 49ers.
so Boldin goes from being a SB winner to the team that was the runner up.

Eh on Boldin. Like Flacco he caught fire in the postseason, but like Flacco hes very mediocre through 16 games. Not really what the 49ers needed with the vertical offense they want Kaepernick to run (speed)

And the 49ers aren't redoing his deal iirc. 49ers got the better bargain but Seahawks got the better player. Read into that what you will.

Speed? Like Mike Wallace?
Rec | Yds | Avg | |
Mike Wallace | 64 | 836 | 13.1 |
Anquan Boldin | 65 | 921 | 14.2 |

Wallace was hurt by a. Ben playing hurt or not at all for half the season, and b. in Todd Haleys offense that limited shots down the field.

Granted, but Boldin's Yards per Reception stat alone is better than a lot of top receivers like AJ Green, Dwayne Bowe, Stevie Johnson, Hakeem Nicks, Michael Crabtree, Brandon Marshall, Reggie Wayne, Victor Cruz and countless others.
He still has a role to play in the 49ers offense. More so than Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams or AJ Jenkins.

As for the Ravens, they get 6m to pay Ellerbe and Reed. Suspect Kruger is gone, though I'm not a massive fan. 1.5 sacks in 5 games without Suggs tells a story

Boldin also benefits from a Ravens offense that is all or nothing down the field. They don't deal in 2 yard passes very often.
Hes a solid player, but I'm not sure hes the difference at this point.

David Garrard has signed with the Jets.
Solid if hes healthy, can manage a game given a run game.

So... he can get down the field and make catches? So speed is not an issue?

You're right, the 49ers have no need for a receiver of that quality.

They have Crabtree. They need a deep threat (Jenkins) to emerge however.

I agree I'm not a fan of Kruger, unfortunately it looks like he could be destined for Cleveland meant to be between us and Colts, sure hope he picks them don't see him being the difference maker for our defense.GSC wrote:As for the Ravens, they get 6m to pay Ellerbe and Reed. You're right, there's no place on a team for both Michael Crabtree AND Anquan Boldin.

That doesn't change the point that they need somebody to emerge.

Yes, Boldin is likely only there for a year. But they got a top quality number 2 receiver for a 6th Round Pick. That's incredible value. He'll be nothing short of a very good addition to the offense.

I agree, I just don't think hes the piece that puts them over the edge. Hopefully for them, Jenkins emerges which should only make Crabtree and Boldin more effective

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
Also important to note that Boldin fits the blue collar makeup of this 49ers team. Yes Harvin is more talented but Boldin is a team guy and really will prove his worth through his blocking too. Some would say the 49ers have the two best blocking wr's in the game atm and I wouldn't disagree. CK will love to have that protection on his runs

49ers favourite land to land Ed Reed, he has signed same agent that represents all 49ers coaches too.
It'd be a dream scenario to get the best FS of all time and let a draft pick learn under him for a year . Taking Bacarri Rambo in second or third would be wise move if Reed signs.

Think its likely he gives Baltimore a chance to match, a la Lewis.
And with the Boldin trade, Baltimore gained 6m and SF lost 6m in the cap stakes.

But we lose Akers and big kicker contract plus Harylson and his 3m likely gone. And then there could be some shock cuts. The niners FO along with one or two others is the standard of the NFL right now and they always make good deals and work contracts well

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
I personally can't see Reed leaving Baltimore, and I can't see Baltimore letting it happen either. Losing Lewis and Reed would be too much of a blow for that organisation, and I don't think Ozzie Newson (spelling wrong i know lol) letting it happen

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
A 6th round pick is a steal for Boldin............ if you're talking about the Boldin that played for Arizona a few years ago. A 6th round pick however for the Boldin that just completed another pretty underwhelming season in Baltimore is market value. Could have got him for a lot less money if they had waited until he hit the open market after Baltimore cut him and they would surely have been an attractive proposition to him. I guess they didn't want to take that chance though. Still, he instantly improves them since he's better than Randy Moss....

Boldin wouldn't have taken a 1 year deal though. They have 15 picks (14 now) so a 6th Round pick is virtually nothing.
Wow, I didn't know how much I liked Boldin until tonight!

Re: Ongoing NFL discussion thread part 2
NFL is a joke..... just been reading their reports on DeAngelo Hall's release and the Shanahan and Allen press conference today..... not a single mention of the cap penalty even though it's the main talking point in both. Are they so embarrassed by how they screwed us over that they're censoring what their reporters are allowed to write about us?? If you're not going to mention it in either of those reports then you might as well not have bothered writing them in the first place.
Roger Goodell sucks
John Mara sucks
The cap penalty sucks
Watching teams that violated the "spirit of the salary cap", but in a way that suited Mara and Goodell, spend all the money they now have as a result in free agency sucks

Hah! I am Dan Snyder....... now go find me a Granny that I can sue!!!
Seriously though, I've calmed down now - am looking forward to see what presents you all get in FA later. Me and the rest of the Redskins fans will be like the naughty kids at Christmas - we'll be getting nothing. I'm actually hopeful that this cap penalty could set us up very nicely in the long term cos we're having to find younger, hungrier players with a point to prove and to maximise our draft picks. If we can do that well then we could have a nice roster going forward that can be augmented with the odd free agent here and there.
You're spot on about D Hall he's only worth about a quarter of his cap hit this year.

With Harvin going to the Seahawks and Boldin joining the 49ers, what are the chances the Rams using one of their two 1st round picks to land Victor Cruz?

It'd have to be their original first so not likely. Vikings at 23 or a late picking team more likely.
