Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
1st round notes
The Jacksonville Jaguars went for the safe(r) pick in Texas A&M OT Luke Joeckel.
Miami made the first big move of the draft and selected Oregon's Dion Jordan at #3. I don't worry about system fit with Jordan because he's an athletic and versatile player. If the Dolphins want to use him as a 43 defensive end then I think there is going to be a transition period but he flashed pass rush ability at Oregon. He just needs to develop an inside/counter because he's a bit one dimensional right now.
Two OGs in the top 10 picks, when was the last time even one guard went in the top 10? The NFL has changed and it makes sense that the better pass protector (Cooper) was selected first, although I thought Warmack was a better fit for Arizona's man blocking scheme. The Titans have quietly built themselves a nice looking OL on paper.
DJ Hayden really wasn't a late riser, or if he was it was due to his medical checking out. I mentioned back in Jan that if it wasn't for the medical issues he would have been in my top 32. Once he started working out and he was clear medically word was out he had a high grade from most teams.
You have to love the Steelers FO when it comes to the draft, what a steal in Jarvis Jones. I don't care about his pro day numbers, Steelers FO said they were happy when he ran a poor 40 because they thought teams would overreact to it -and they did, SEC production, "the kid's a ball'er" as Mike Mayock would say.
I Love the Eifert pick by the Bengals as well. Athletic player for his size, you can use him from the slot or split him out, good speed, hands, should be a potent weapon in the passing game IMO. Not a bad blocker either.
Not that surprised Cordarrelle Patterson went in the bottom half of round one rather than top 16. I felt his size (6'2, 216lbs) combined with his athleticism (speed, quickness, COD), ability to contribute as a returner, gimmick plays, reverses etc, meant he was worth a high grade and you could get production from him while giving him a chance to develop as a receiver. I think the where the Vikings got him is a good deal.
Like I said in the chat box EJ Manuel was one of two big surprise picks for me, who knows how each team ranks the quarterbacks, but I really thought Ryan Nassib would be the pick with the Doug Marrone connection. Surprised Manuel was the only QB taken in round one as well, even in a down year talent-wise I didn't expect that.
Chicago Bears pick Kyle Long was the other big surprise for me, I had a much lower grade on him, off-field stuff and one scout reportedly said "If his last name was Smith he wouldn't be getting all this publicity as a first-round pick...He'd be just kind of a middle-of-the-road plugger guy inside. He's getting a little overhyped."
Did the Cowboys reach for Frederick? Scouts liked him but even Frederick himself was surprised by his 1st round selection, "I thought I was a 2nd round offensive lineman ... I thought somewhere in the second round would be more of a fit for me. I truly didn't expect this."
Bit surprised Arthur Brown made it out of round one but I think he'll go top half of round two. Keen to see where Jesse Williams and Keenan Allen end up as well.

I'd be content with moving down from 35 given how deep this class is but it doesn't really seem possible. BPA is Cyprien I think. Takes me back to that time I was hoping Allen made it to the McNabb pick >__>

TBH expect it was just as much down to Banner with some influence from Horton as he's meant to be a big believer in pass rush being the key to your pass defense not the DBs, but yes I would have traded and got Mingo or Jones at #16 and FS/CB in the second.Olly wrote:Woah Derby, Lombardi really does suck

Don't really think you'd have got a 2nd. Oakland went from 3 to 12 and only got a high 2nd, and that was with the last premium LT prospect on the board.

Jets have to start drafting offense at some point though. A 5th is earmarked for Ivory I think, but that offense looks ugly as it stands

I think it's fine if we add a top TE. We need a WR to replace Holmes in 2014 but we can roll with Holmes, Hill, Kerley and Braylon Edwards (who should re-sign) at WR and Powell and Goodson are an upgrade over Greene.

Apparently LSU CB Tharold Simon was arrested last night for in public intimidation, resisting an officer, and unnecessary noise violation. Perfect timing...

Ideally, yes. Willie Colon is too injury prone not to draft Guard. Brandon Moore could still come back.

There's noises about everyone. We can't afford not to draft TE or WR in the next 2 rounds. So much talent will be off the board very quickly.

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
@Gil_Brandt Expect 3 QBs to go between picks 33-39. My sources expect @Eagles (35) and @NYJets (39) to go that route.
Hmm. I'd imagine the Eagles would be Geno, Jets Nassib.

Hmm, some speculation that Jesse Williams might have medical red flags ("knee issues") might be in for a tumble, hope not.

I'd like to see us continue the re-tooling at receiver, I don't know if he has medical red flags but if Keenan Allen continues to fall he'd be a nice fit for us. I'd like to see us come away with a DB as well, I have high grade on DJ Swearinger. A DT who can be disruptive inside, Kawaan Short, wouldn't mind Margus Hunt if he's available lower 2nd round as I think he fits 43 DE and can kick inside in the nickel. Arthur Brown if he somehow falls.Olly wrote:What do you hope the Pats will do twelve

Jets have made calls today to multiple teams to try to move up from 39th spot in second round to draft QB. Debated Geno Smith at No. 13.

The Lions are actively shopping the 36th overall pick. Perhaps someone wants a QB there. Time will tell
Ultimately though, if it is Geno the Jets covet, SF at 34 is the spot

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
I'm really scared now. Trading up for anyone is a bad idea, let alone a QB.
I'm hoping Jax take a QB, the 49ers don't want to trade back and the eagles take a QB. Get them off the board before #36 which the Lions are looking to trade.

Well isn't Allen's fall mainly down to an ankle injury? Does look to me though to be a few teams who will go WR at some point tonight (Bills, Jets, Panthers, Chargers, Pittsburgh, Raiders, Ravens)twelve283 wrote:I'd like to see us continue the re-tooling at receiver, I don't know if he has medical red flags but if Keenan Allen continues to fall he'd be a nice fit for us. Agreed we need to draft receiver Twelve, with Lloyd not coming back I wouldnt be surprised to see us draft two WR's.
A corner is needed for sure and I feel we could do with a guard on the O-line at some point.

That's what I suspect but I don't know how severe it is, I was concerned before the draft that the injury was lingering.Derbyblue wrote:Well isn't Allen's fall mainly down to an ankle injury? Does look to me though to be a few teams who will go WR at some point tonight (Bills, Jets, Panthers, Chargers, Pittsburgh, Raiders, Ravens)twelve283 wrote:I'd like to see us continue the re-tooling at receiver, I don't know if he has medical red flags but if Keenan Allen continues to fall he'd be a nice fit for us.
Yes I could see a double pick at WR as well, similar to what we've done in the past at other positions, has to be right value of course. I think we're actually OK on the OL, we've got solid interior guys and I think Cannon could prob kick inside as well.Olly wrote:Agreed we need to draft receiver Twelve, with Lloyd not coming back I wouldnt be surprised to see us draft two WR's.

I'm hoping Jax take a QB, the 49ers don't want to trade back and the eagles take a QB. Get them off the board before #36 which the Lions are looking to trade.
where have you heard 49ers aren't interested in trading back, or are you just meaning they don't need to because they have few roster spots. I'd love to deal with the Jets, I think we could get a third out of it at least. And then I'd trade two thirds for a second tbh considering how many good players are left. We could get three good players to compliment Reid and then trade for future picks and get another one or two at most

Depends how much in love they are with Ertz I guess. Got enough picks to not feel pressure to trade down.

Watson could land in Detroit. Think they'll find a WR hard to pass up though, esp Hunter.
Beyond that, hard to see him getting past Arizona.

suppose but I'm not as high on Ertz as others for some reason. Head says he is good pick but just not feeling it

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Lookin forward to the Redskins getting amongst the action tonight. Conventional wisdom says we should take a Safety at pick 51 but depends on who is left. I'd be content with BPA since there are enough needs elsewhere to allow that. Wouldn't be averse to a good ILB to learn under London Fletcher in what should surely be his last season. I think we'd also be tempted by any decent WRs still there should the better Safeties all be off the board by then. CB is obviously also another possibility but the re-signing of D Hall prob means we could wait to see who is there in the 3rd before addressing that.

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
I hear the #Bucs are trying to move back in the second round. Lost some picks in the Revis trade, want to recoup a few… We'll see.

Apparently Jamie Dukes said we'll see 10 CB's go in the second, I have a hard time believing that and not just because I need a CB/FS to fall to us in the 3rd for me to not go insane.

My bold prediction is 10 CB's and 10 WR's in Round 2. Mental, but a lot of talent and value.

It may well be, but 10 in one round?? No chance!
BTW, first time since 1963 that no RBs were selected in 1st round. It's a passing league right enough...
