Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
A few quick notes on the 1st round:-
- I think the Rams have 'overdraft' Tavon Austin. I think there are plenty of better/ equal ability WR still available. Winning the Super Bowl is a marathon not a 40 yard dash at the Combine.
- I'm not surprised EJ Manuel went in the 1st round. With the Eagles keen on him, I was pretty sure another team would take a gamble on him before the Eagles 2nd round pick.
- The Vikings could have got a bargain in Sharrif Floyd at #23 but gave far too much away for Cordarrelle Patterson considering what the Dolphins and 49ers game up for higher 1st round picks.
- I'm not all that convinced on Xavier Rhodes and feel the Vikings could have avoided trading up for Patterson, picked him at #25 and still got a very decent CB in the 2nd round.
- Not sure how Eric Reid will do in San Francisco? He will probably do ok but I do feel the 49ers panicked with the trade. No other safeties went between that pick and the Ravens picking up Matt Elam at #32. Maybe they thought the Bengals were going to take him.
- Top picks from the 1st round include the Jets getting Milliner & Richardson, the Saints getting Vaccaro, the Panthers with Star Lotulelei, the Bengals with Tyler Eifert and the Colts with Werner.

The 49ers and Dolphins also gave up 1st round picks. The Vikes highest pick was a late 2nd rounder.

Geno Smith to NYJ.... How many buttfumbles will it take for Jets fans to start chanting Smith's name? Or might he even start Day 1? Rex has to win this year to save his job.... is Sanchez really the QB he wants to back to help him do that?

"@IanKenyonNFL: Seriously you guys. Think about that. The 49ers turned their backup quarterback into Tank Carradine and a 2014 3rd rounder."
I'm pretty sure we got 2 3rd rounders for 2014, one from KC and one for trading down with the Titans, but great stuff by the front office

Well drafting a QB this year certainly suggests to me that Rex is gonna be staying on.
Otherwise what's the point in bringing in a new coach, who may hate Smith as a QB next year.
Would be a Jets thing to do though...

Pretty sure this won't happen, been said so many time that they still have guaranteed money to pay Sanchez so there is no point in releasing himm you'd hope Schefter would have considered this.

We restructured D'Brickshaw Ferguson earlier tonight saving $5m in cap. All signs point towards it.

Don't the Jets still owe get a cap hit of like $8million if they cut Sanchez? What's the point for just a roster spot? Cut some of your other 6 QBs.

Maybe i'm just ignorant, but what would be the point of releasing him? Its $8mil (i think) against the cap, where he's on the team or he's released. Only a trade, if i'm correct, would get him off the cap, but that isn't happening anytime soon. Surely you'd rather have him on the bench just incase, not like there will be controversy if he doesn't start as most Jets hate him anyway, but a decent back-up is always worth having. What am I missing?

$4.3m against the cap if cut. I'm not saying it's what I'd do, but it''s what it looks like we're doing.

ah ok that makes a bit of sense I guess, so they'd still pay him the moneys but the cap hit is lower, wish I had $3.7mil to burn :pNYJ wrote:$4.3m against the cap if cut. I'm not saying it's what I'd do, but it''s what it looks like we're doing.

I would cut Mark Sanchez. Rather have him gone than have Geno constantly looking at a failure daily. Dump the biggest form of the Jets failures and set a tone that this is a new Jets.
Geno doesn't make any difference to the Jets draft plans next year. Maybe he plays well and coaches want him. If he doesn't he's a 2nd pick. Nothing stopping the Jets taking another QB next year

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Mike Glennon?! QB in the 3rd was a waste, if you blame Josh for being inconsistent then what the hell is Glennon? I can't see him challenging Freeman seriously, this all points to Schiano getting rid of Freeman next year, regardless of how he plays, if Mike Glennon is the replacement then that is a bad state of affairs, wasting time that some guys on the team like VJax and Revis don't have. If you wanted a QB, guys like Bray would have been gotten in the 4th, plenty of solid players left in the 3rd. This move annoyed me greatly, would like to thank Josh for his service over the years as now I don't think he will be here next season!
If you replace Freeman you need to get a top QB to replace him or you're just starting all over again. Secondary is now looking super on paper, Banks was a top pickup, but Glennon being picked with Moore sitting there? Annoys me greatly.

I don't think anything would sum the Jets up more than Geno Smith being tasked with saving Rex's job.

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Much like Geno, but to a greater extent, Glennon has no bearing on the Bucs ability to grab a passer next year.
Given the only way Glennon sees the field is if Freemans hurt, or just so terrible he gets pulled, in the latter instance, Freemans a goner anyway.
Its a flier on a backup. In a few years the Bucs might be able to swing him for a 2nd, or he might develop into something. QBs are valuable commodities.

You take a flier on a back up take it on a better QB. Bray in the 4th would have been fine. Regardless of how well Freeman plays I think this shows he is gone, which will annoy me if he gets them to the play offs.
Also the Buccaneers secondary has a new name courtesy of Darrelle Revis: "The No-Fly Zone"

If the Buccaneers are making decisions at QB based on a 3rd round pick in a bad QB class, then its probably time to clean house.
As for the better QB part, thats their evaluation.

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
I think it's a pretty horrible one, fans and the team b!tch about Freeman being inconsistent, Glennon is exactly that.
Of course they can pick one next year, but why draft a guy so high when there are plenty of other issues and QBs of similar abilities can be got later? That's my biggest issue, wastign a high pick on a backup. Also the fact that they now won't draft a top guy in 2014 should they need to.

Glennon will have no bearing on whether the Bucs feel theres a franchise QB high in the 2014 draft. He's a 3rd round pick.
Hes a developmental pick. It is what it is. In a few years he might net a 2nd. In any rate, the 3rd round isn't really where you aim to be filling holes.
Personally if I were the Bucs, I'd be asking what it takes to prise away Trent Cole or Vinny Curry. My guess is not much on Cole.

Two 4ths? He had a poor year last year. If they had grab Damontre Moore and Jesse Williams I would have been ecstatic but this leaves me a bit annoyed. It's a waste of a high pick when there isn't much disparity between the available talent and you need to accumulate depth in other areas.

Don't think it would even take that much on Cole. Not a great year last year in the Wide-9 and fairly pricey. Added in the 3-4 conversion and I think hes available tbh.

Were you there for the Clayborne rant a few years back? I'm hoping I matched it, still fuming.

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Was kinda iffy on the Ertz pick, didn't really see a great value in a TE at 35 with the holes on the roster. Though from the point of view that we'll be starting a rookie QB next year, every young QB likes a reliable receiving TE. Now we have Celek, Casey and Ertz. With that, solidified protection and a run game, its a lot easier for a young QB

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Well they took a CB I'm happy, though still not forgiven the lack of a trade I'll allow Mingo to win me over though.
Davone Bess deal: "In addition to Bess, the Browns received the No. 111 overall and No. 217 overall picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, while the Dolphins received picks No. 104 and No. 164." I'm actually pretty happy with that, I didn't see WR as a need for the draft but have been wanting them to add experience to the group and Bess brings that without a big price tag, seems a bit strange after the signing of David Nelson those two combined could push both Jordan Norwood and Josh Cooper down to the practice squad.

Thomond, calm down mate, it's not the end of the world! Freeman is still our man for this season and Glennon will be a better backup than Orlovsky as he's a much better system fit with his big arm.
We all know that Freeman is in his do-or-die season and boing has changed as far as I'm concerned.
Also, if Freeman goes down injured, I'd much rather have Glennon running our current offence than Orlovsky. Glennon's poor performances came when he was under a lot of pressure. He'll now be behind a ProBowl left tackle and two ProBowl guards.

Woke up this morning to find the Packers traded down twice. Would like to see Barrett Jones fall to them. Wouldn't have a problem with going for Denard Robinson in the 7th, especially with 3 7ths, if he is still there. He could be an exciting player.

Love what the 49ers done last night, getting a 2014 third was great as well. Carradine, Reid, McDonald and Lemonier should have some impact during season although only one of them will start.
Don't really get what Patriots or Seahawks done tbh. Michael was a strange one, do they not have two good rb's? and there were so many good players on board.

Re: NFL Draft 2013 discussion
Hmm, to be honest I like it. It mightn't have been their biggest need but he should be able to help Rodgers out. If he can improve his blocking and stay healthy then I like it. He shouldn't have to deal with too many men in the box which he could exploit. It might give teams something else to think about, possibly making play action more effective, because to be honest last seaon you were almost certain Rodgers was going to throw it and even if he didn't the running back wasn't able to take advantage of any holes. Having said that, I think they could have gone o-line with the pick, but if they can pick up some in the 4th/5th I don't have a problem with Lacy.
I like what they did in the 3rd round though. Turning one pick into 3 or 4, take a chance on some guys lower down.

I like what SD is doing. Fluker was perhaps a reach but he wasn't going to last much longer anyway, and the Chargers needed tackles.
Manti T'eo is a good player, especially as an ILB in a 3-4. Yeah the GF story was weird, but comparatively, he isn't in trouble with the law, nor is he more interested in getting high than football *cough* Mathieu *cough*.
Keenan Allen is a steal in the 3rd for a team lacking talent out wide

Agree GSC, SD have made some good picks. Allen could prove himself to be a steal, possible surprise team this season
